Nocturne — Syrie James

"If you read any book for Valentine's Day, read 'Nocturne' by Syrie James." — Miss Remmers

From Amazon.com...

"When Nicole Whitcomb's car runs off a Colorado mountain road during a blinding snowstorm, she is saved from death by a handsome, fascinating, and enigmatic stranger.

Snowbound with him for days in his beautiful home high in the Rockies, she finds herself powerfully attracted to him. But there are things about him that mystify her, filling her with apprehension.

Who is Michael Tyler? Why does he live alone in such a secluded spot and guard his private life so carefully? What secret--or secrets--is he hiding?

Nicole has secrets of her own and a past she is running from--but Michael understands her better than anyone she has ever known. Soon, she is falling as deeply in love with him as he is with her--a profoundly meaningful experience that is destined to change their lives forever.

As the sexual tension between them builds, however, the clues mount up. When Nicole learns her host's terrifying secret, there is nowhere for her to run but into the blizzard raging outside, and Michael may be the only one who can save her life."

Nocturne in C Sharp Minor:
Talk about a surprising read! I'll admit it, when I accepted this book for review I had NO idea what it was about. I thought the synopsis sounded intriguing and I figured, "hey, why not!" I was captivated by the end of the first chapter and couldn't put it down. Both characters, Michael and Nicole, have this "creep" factor that Syrie James' perfects. They both exhibit this aurora of normalcy 98% of the time, but then there would be a sentence that I had to reread a few times that radiated creepy and mysterious; this is what kept my interest and kept me reading!

Then, about half way through, there was this moment of "WOA!" I don't want to give anything away as the synopsis was written so flawlessly not to hint at the real plot, but let me just say — you won't see it coming. I mean, really... this twist just had me in every way! I have read and reread the above synopsis but there isn't even a hint at the major theme of this novel.

The ending was flawlessly honest — it wasn't like most other novels of this genre where you can see how it going to end and you know what will happen with the characters. The ending of this book was real, even for the genre, it was plausible and probable — it definitely kept me thinking and considering the possibilities.

This novel was a quick read that I wasn't prepared to love. I wasn't prepared to gasp out loud and thrust the spine into the air with disbelief. I didn't know what it was about and I spent half the book guessing all the wrong answers. I know I'm early, but if you read any book for Valentine's Day, read "Nocturne" by Syrie James.

When you finish, email me at google at gmail dot com to discuss everything! I can't wait to hear what you think!
