Sourcebooks has two fabulous summer lovin' books coming out. The Summer of No Regrets by Katherine Grace Bond and While He Was Away by Karen Schreck are both released May 1st. Today I have a guest post from Katherine on why we crave fame. Sign up below for a chance to win both titles!
Why We Crave Fame “Celebrity-in-Hiding.” When I first started writing THE SUMMER OF NO REGRETS, I didn’t want to admit how much that idea intrigued me. I’m a lot like my main character, Brigitta—all about finding the meaning of life, not fantasizing over whether the guy next door is a movie star. When I bought a National Enquirer, I explained to the grocery store clerk that it was for research— that I was writing a book (“Yes,” I told her modestly, “I am an author.”) I certainly didn’t normally read that sort of thing. Of course not. Well, okay, maybe the headlines. Occasionally.
But as I read through stacks of People and Star and Us (which is a lot like eating sugar cubes all day long), and more stacks of celebrity biographies, I started to wonder what the deal is about fame. Why does it fascinate us? Why do we love the idea of either being famous or being connected to somebody famous?
I think it’s because we’ve got some interesting ideas about “being known.” If I’m “known,” people know who I am, right? Lots of people. Those people will say I’m talented and beautiful and they’ll treat me with special respect. If I’m known, I get to wear amazing clothes and ride in limousines. People will do what I want just because I’m known. If I only eat the green M&M’s, someone will pick those out of the five-pound bag and put them into a crystal dish for me. If I’m known, I am important—more important than that boss who fired me, or the teacher who gave me a C and said “You ought to be ashamed of yourself,” or the security guard who threw me out of a mall in Seattle for plugging my cellphone into a floor outlet (true story!)
But is that really what being known is? Getting special treatment and being better than somebody else? Who really knows me when I’m known like that? What I crave, what I really crave, is to have a few people who will look into my eyes and know me—know how I wrinkle my nose when I laugh, and what my favorite show is, and why I’m afraid of guns. It’s what we all want, I think—people who will listen to us when we’re scared, and scream with us on the roller coaster, and trust us with their hurts. We want to know we matter. We want to have a few people we don’t have to hide ourselves from.
So is Brigitta’s next-door-neighbor a secret superstar? We can talk about that later. I need to go to the grocery store and read some headlines.
The Summer of No Regrets by Katherine Grace Bond Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire (May 1st, 2012) Paperback: 290 pages The day Brigitta accidentally flings herself into the lap of a guy she's never met, her friend Natalie is convinced he's Trent Yves, egotistical heartthrob-in-hiding. When the boy, who calls himself Luke, is nearly eaten by a cougar, Brigitta finds herself saving his life, being swept into his spectacular embrace and wondering if she wants Natalie's fantasy to be true.
As the two spend the summer together raising orphaned cougar cubs, Brigitta still can't be sure of his true identity. But then again, since her grandparents' death, her father's sudden urge to give away all their possessions and become a shaman, and her own awkward transition from girlhood into a young woman, she isn't sure of anything. What is the truth? More importantly, can she accept it?
While He Was Away by Karen Schreck Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire (May 1st, 2012) Paperback: 249 pages This is just something I have to do, okay?" I hear David say."The right thing."
He cradles my face in his hands. He kisses me hard. Then he lets go of me. His eyes dart from me to whatever's next.
All she wants is for him to stay. She's been doing pretty well, pretending he doesn't have to go. But one day, after one last night to remember, she wakes up and there's no denying it anymore. He's gone.
When Penna Weaver's boyfriend goes off to Iraq, she's left facing life without him. As summer sets in, Penna tries to distract herself with work and her art, but the not knowing is slowly driving her crazy. Especially when David stops writing.
She knows in her heart he will come home. But will he be the same boy she fell in love with?

1. Can you tell us one of your favorite lines from Anastasia Forever?
My Sourcebooks editor, Leah Hultenschmidt share the same favorite Tess line which comes near the end of the book. “I think Anne just told destiny to suck it.” Makes me laugh every time I read it.
2. What can you share with us about Sweet Dead Life?
Oh how I love this book! I love it so hard! I think the blurb on Amazon gives you the gist:
Fourteen-year-old Janena Samuels is having a very bad 8th grade year. Her single mother spends all day in bed. Dad vanished when she was eight. Her 16-year-old brother, Casey, tries to hold what's left of the family together by working two jobs--difficult, as he's stoned all the time. To make matters worse, Janena is sick. When she collapses one day, Casey tries to race her to the hospital in their beat-up Prius and crashes instead. Janena wakes up in the ER to find Casey beside her. Beatified. Literally. The flab and zits? Gone. Weirder, he makes her feel better. Before long, Janena figures out that Casey didn't survive the accident at all. He's an"A-word." (She can't bring herself to utter the truth.) Soon they both discover that Janena isn't just dying: she's being poisoned. And Casey has been sent back to help solve the mystery that not only holds the key to her survival, but also to their mother's mysterious depression and father's disappearance.
Also, when Casey returns as Janena’s guardian angel, he comes back with all his bad habits firmly intact. Which I also love.
3. Can you describe your writing process? What steps do you take before writing?
I make a huge mug of green tea with honey or Agave. I sit down. I open a new document. I type.
Beyond that, I also do some basic outlining and character brainstorming. And often there’s a number of hours of research involved – like for the book I’m working on right now, I ‘ve extensively researched film noir, both reading it and watching the movies.
4. Do you have plans for any other series or stand-alone books?
Well, as I’m typing this, we have just announced that there will be a follow up book to next year’s THE SWEET DEAD LIFE, It will be out in spring of 2014 and will be the rest of Casey and Janena’s story. I am thrilled! Beyond that, you’ll just have to wait and see.
Anastasia Forever by Joy Preble Publisher: Sourcebooks (August 1st, 2012) Reading Level: Young Adult Paperback: 304 pages Series: Dreaming Anastasia, #3 Stories within stories. But if you are thinking"ya know, this car makes me think of a hamster" you would be correct! It is the car that was featured on the VMAs and I adore their commercial!

For an extra entry answer this question in the comments below. If you were fused with a cell phone like Samantha, what gadget would you enjoy having the most?
Well now hold up! If we’re talking about THE UNDERTAKERS, then don’t call ‘em zombies! Zombies are slow and stupid, while Corpses – the villainous invaders who animate the dead and wear them like suits of clothing – are fast, smart and well organized. They project an illusion of normalcy around themselves, so that 99.999% of the world see ordinary men and women. Only kids, and only a few kids, are “lucky” enough to be able to penetrate these masks, and spot the rotting cadavers underneath.
So, to answer the question: you don’t.
Not unless you’re an Undertaker.
2. Can you give us a teaser from Queen of the Dead?
Thirteen-year-old Will Ritter and the rest of the Undertakers have won their first victory, but the celebration is cut short when a new threat emerges through the Void between worlds. Lilith Cavanugh, the Queen of the Dead, is even more ruthless and dangerous than her predecessor, and her ambitions are even more sinister.
To defeat her, the Undertakers will need to prevent an assassination, rescue Will’s family, and somehow convince a skeptical F.B.I. agent that their cause is just. But how to you convince a grown-up that monsters are real?
3. Are you addicted to any TV shows? What do you watch in your spare time?
I am a crazed Doctor Who fan and have been since I was a teenager. When it’s on, it’s my favorite show. When it’s not, I mourn it and wait for my other favorite shows: Fringe, The Walking Dead, How I Met Your Mother and NCIS!
4. What are some of your favorite Young Adult novels?
I enjoyed the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series. I loved Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games Trilogy. But my favorites in YA have to Jackie Kessler, A. S. King and Heather Brewer! YA has come a long way since I was a kid, when Nancy Drew the Hardy Boys were about the only games in town. It’s edgier now, more challenging, and I think that’s being reflected in the number of young readers we’re picking up out there.
The Undertakers: Queen of the Dead by Ty Drago Publisher: Sourcebooks (October 1st, 2012) Reading Level: Young Adult/Middle Grade Paperback: 432 pages Series: The Undertakers, #2 Twelve -year old Will Ritter and his rag-tag army of teenage resistance fighters may have triumphed over the Zombies last time, but that's the thing about the dead: they keep coming back.
A new Corpse leader has crossed the rift and taken command of the invasion: The Queen of the Dead is even more brilliant and ruthless than her predecessor, and her ambitions are even deadlier. Will and the crew must somehow rescue his mother, prevent an assassination, and show FBI Agent Ramirez the truth about the Corpses-and the danger the world faces.
But how do a bunch of kids prove to a grown-up that monsters are real?

After two weeks in shock, she wakes up to her new reality: she's single, attending a state university instead of a music conservatory, ignored by her former circle of friends, and failing a class for the first time in her life.
Leaving a party alone, Jacqueline is assaulted by her ex's frat brother. Rescued by a stranger who seems to be in the right place at the right time, she wants nothing more than to forget the attack and that night--but her savior, Lucas, sits on the back row of her econ class, sketching in a notebook and staring at her. Patty Blount is here today to tell us what inspired Bailey Grant's love of video game design in her newest book, TMI.
What Inspired Bailey Grant’s Love of Video Game Design? By Patty Blount When I was writing TMI, Megan’s character was sort of born fully developed. But Bailey’s character was too flat. All she wanted was a boyfriend. I had to keep writing scenes for her to see under all her fluff to discover what she really wants. And then I finally figured it out. Bailey wants to be loved, yes, but she really wants to find out who she is. Not knowing her dad and her efforts to find him were really to find herself. All her previous attempts to find love all failed because she didn’t yet know who she was. Was she a rock-climbing nature girl? Was she a stamp-collecting antique fan? A race-car driving adrenalin junkie? Bailey’s tried on a number of hobbies and none of them were a good fit until Simon introduced her to video games back in ninth grade.
Girls aren’t supposed to like video games. Some do, certainly. But Bailey really loves them. And for the first time, she gets a glimpse of the person she can be – maybe even the person she’s supposed to be. Bailey’s journey of self-discovery was really my journey as a writer – as her creator – to find out what made her tick. It began when my son demonstrated Assassin’s Creed for me. I’m not a video game fan myself (true fact: Xbox games give me motion sickness). But I do enjoy watching someone else play. AC has a rich back story, a detailed game space, and sympathetic characters. As my son played, he admitted he’d love to find a girl who loves AC as much as he does.
That got me thinking… wouldn’t Bailey be exactly the kind of girl to play Assassin’s Creed just to impress her latest boy? She would indeed. And for a girl who doesn’t quite know how she fits into the real world, sinking into a game world would definitely hold a lot of appeal.
But things in video worlds aren’t as easy as Bailey thinks. That’s why her game design is sort of a mash-up of all her favorite games… at first. It’s not until she meets Ryder that the game takes on a real shape of its own.
If I could design my own video game, it would have a haunted house theme. I love the TV show Supernatural and think it would be awesome to investigate hauntings, collecting protection points and weapons as you try to prove whether the level you’re on is really haunted or just a hoax.
Do you play video games? What are your favorites? What would your ideal game be like?
TMI by Patty Blount Published: Sourcebooks Fire (August 6th, 2013) Reading Level: Young Adult Paperback: 336 pages Summary: Best friends don’t lie. Best friends don’t ditch you for a guy. Best friends don’t post your deepest, darkest secrets online.

She knows in her heart he will come home. But will he be the same boy she fell in love with?
Review:
I had been wanting to read this book since I checked out the summary on goodreads. I'm a sucker for a good love story and I've been very interested in all the army-related books coming out lately. While He Was Away involves Penna, a young girl dealing with her boyfriend David getting ready to go into the military.
I loved the beginning of the book where we really get a good idea of Penna and David's intense relationship. It's obvious that they care deeply about one another and are hurting from the idea of being apart. I gotta say, after David leaves the book took a lot of turns I didn't expect. Maybe it was the summary that threw me off but I thought this would be about Penna changing while David was gone and not feeling as connected to him, or David dealing with issues while he was away. Or, even Penna finding someone else she was interested in while he was gone. It wasn't really any of those things.
Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad book at all, and I do think it accurately portrays the emotions of a teenage girl missing her boyfriend who is overseas, but it just may not be the book people expect. To me, this was more about Penna's journey to find her grandmother, deal with being alone, handle her mother, and learn how to be more self-sufficient. Those issues seem to be much more important to the story, rather than anything about David's feelings about being away.
Penna was a good character and I admired her courage. Even though she was young, she did everything she could to keep in touch with David and let him know how much he meant to her. One bonus was Ravi. He was an old friend of David's and he is dealing with is own issues. I admit, I thought he would be playing a much bigger role in this book. He was an interesting character and I liked his interactions with Penna.
I could have handled the overall plot of the book just fine; however, the ending threw me off. I didn't expect it to be like that and I guess it didn't really make sense to me. I didn't see it coming, which was good, but it just seemed abrupt. This made it maybe a 3.5 rating for me but I went up to a 4 just because I did really enjoy Karen's writing style and realistic portrayal of a young couple dealing with being apart. Recommended: Contemporary fans looking for a book with some deeper aspects.

1. Can you share with us how you juggle raising 4 kids and writing? Any tips?
Careful planning and lots of organization! My kids have always been on a schedule… it was the only way I could get anything done or have some"me" time: -) I also learned to become the queen of multi-tasking. As far as writing, when they were little, I would write during naptime. When they outgrew naps, I would write during quiet time (they had to go somewhere quiet and watch a full movie while resting, and then they could come out. If they came out before it was done, they had to go back to naps. Worked like a charm). Now all my kids are in school, but I still tend to write in the afternoon. I guess I'm just conditioned that way, so that's when I'm most creative. Always schedule"me" time, or you will go crazy. When mommy's happy, everybody's happy; ) 2. What has been the most surprising part of the writing, publishing, and promoting process for you?
The surprising part of writing has been discovering I can write a lot more genres than I originally thought. I love light and funny, but I always thought that meant I could only write romantic comedies or chick lit. I never realized I could still keep my voice and write light and funny stories in both UMG action adventure stories as well as adult cozy mysteries. It's been fun stepping outside of my box, and who knows, I just might try something else as well: -) As far as publishing, I never realized how long it takes for a book to hit the shelves. A year is actually a quick turnaround these days. And for promotion, I had no clue how much work is involved on my part and how little control a writer has over how much his or her publisher is willing to do. Yet promotion is everything when it comes to a book's success, especially in the first sixty days. Thank goodness I love promotion, but the key is to balance promoting a book while working on your next work in progress. Not an easy task.
3. The Samantha Granger Experiment: Fused is a very unique story. Have you had any other ideas that are unique, but you are more hesitant to tackle them?
I never lack for ideas, and I've learned over the years to go for unique. The more unique the better. However, the publishing world is fickle. They don't always go for them, but that doesn't mean they never will. The key is to keep coming up with premises that are different until one sticks. But don't chuck the rest, keep them and keep going back to them. The publishing world works in cycles. What's oversaturated now will come back around in five or ten years, so that great idea you had for a certain type of book is never really dead. It's just dormant, waiting to be reborn: -)
4. Can you give us a few hints as to what Samantha may face in book 2?
In book two, FEARLESS June, 2011, Samantha Granger has finally come to terms with being different. The only way to keep her situation under control is to stay far away from Trevor Hamilton or risk bringing Digital Diva out of retirement. She gets her wish when the goverment gets involved. They've discovered Sam's identity and threaten to expose her if she doesn't cooperate. She's whisked off to Washington DC to a special school for gifted students called IPR (Institute of Phenomenal Research), where she discovers she's not alone. Only, when a mole threatens their very existence, it's up to Sam and her fellow Phenoteens to save themselves. 5. Your other series is described as a"Paranormal Adult Cozy Mystery"; can you tell us a little about it?
TEMPEST IN THE TEA LEAVES (August 2011) Sunshine Meadows is a big city psychic who moves to a small town in Upstate NY to open her fortune telling business, inheriting a haunted house and a strange cat residing within. Sunny gives her first reading to the town librarian and discovers the woman is going to die. When the woman flees in teror, Sunny calls the police. Only, the hard nosed cynical detective is a"non-believer". He finds the librarian dead, and Sunny becomes his number one suspect, forcing her to prove her innocence. 6. Is it difficult to jump from writing a middle grade book, to writing an adult book? What are the challenges of those transitions, if any?
Both my heroines are fun quirky characters and the stories both have humor and a bit of romance; however, the tone and pace are different. My Samantha Granger books are fast paced and full of action and adventure. Whereas my fortune teller books are slower paced and have that Murder She Wrote cozy feel to them. When I finish one book, it's refreshing to write something different. Keeps things fun and interesting so I don't get bored, and writing never becomes a chore. The most difficult part is making sure my language sounds age appropriate. I don't want Sunny sounding too young, or Samantha sounding too old: -) 7. What is next for you and what are you working on now?
FUSED is out on the shelves, FEARLESS is finished and comes out in June, TEMPEST IN THE TEA LEAVES is fiinished and comes out in August. Right now I am working on book 3 of Samantha Granger, FREEDOM, which will come out in November of 2011, and then after that I will start book 2 of my fortune teller series, CORPSE IN THE CRYSTAL BALL, which will come out in May of 2012, followed by TROUBLE IN THE TAROT CARDS which will come out in February 2013. Phew! Deadlines galore. Careful what you wish for, people, but I'm not complaining: -)
Thanks so much for listening to me ramble, people, and please let me know what you think of FUSED! I love hearing from my readers: -)

Hi there! My name is Kari Lee Townsend, and I am the author of THE SAMANTHA GRANGER EXPERIMENT series. I am thrilled to be the guest blogger for today, especially on such a fantastic blog. I thought it would be fun to share with you all how I came up with the idea for FUSED, and what the most challenging parts of writing the first book were. I am a mom of four children. My boys are 12, almost 14, and 16, and my daughter is 8 (poor babyJ) My kids LOVE their gadgets: everything from their x-box, to their I-pods, to their cell phones. Especially their cell phones! So much so I truly think they’re obsessed J Every time I turn around, their faces are staring down and their thumbs are flying as they send text after text after text until my eyes cross from just watching them.
One day I finally said, “If you’re not careful, you’ll turn into one of your gadgets!”
Huge light bulb moment for me, people. I thought OMG that would make a fabulous book, and voila, Samantha Granger was born. A techno superhero who goes by the name Digital Diva and has a GPS in her head, cell phone in her hand, camera in her eyes, and many more functions. Of course I then had to dedicate and thank my children over and over and over or risk never hearing the end of it. They love to inform me, “See, Mom. We told you technology rocks.” Seriously, though, I have to admit… they are the best brainstormers on the planet. They give me so many ideas for some really cool scenes.
Which brings me to the challenging parts of writing this book. As I said earlier, my children might be techno geniuses, but I definitely am not! I had to learn the lingo, figure out how to operate the gadgets, and really research the central nervous system. My background is in English. Science… not so much. I wanted the book to seem realistic, so I had the cell phone fuse with her spinal cord and take over for her brain in controlling her body. It was a blast making the scenes where she uses her powers seem like something from a CSI episode, where you can really visualize what’s going on inside her. However, keeping each “episode” fresh and unique was not easy. And as a twist, the cell phone isn’t just any cell phone, but you’ll have to read the book to discover the details J
Balancing the 911 rescues with the romance as well as trying to figure out who is after her, keep her identity a secret, and try to find a way to reverse her uniqueness was not easy. So much goes into pulling all the parts of a book together, but writing FUSED was so much fun, I’d do it over and over again in a heartbeat. Actually, I sort of am J Book two, FEARLESS, comes out in June of 2011, and book three, FREEDOM, comes out in November of 2011.
Thanks so much for having me, and I hope you all enjoy THE SAMANTHA GRANGER EXPERIMENT as much as I did. If so, write to me and tell me about it. I love to hear from my readers. And if you go on my website, I have some fun activities that go along with the book under the Fun Stuff tab. http://www.karileetownsend.com Enjoy, and don’t forget to embrace your inner diva!

1. Can you explain how you first got the idea for Dreaming Anastasia?
The kernel of the idea for DA came one afternoon when it was raining to hard for me to get to my car after school and I was hanging around my classroom waiting for it let up. This girl characters came to me. She was funny and smart and sarcastic – and she was sitting in history class writing a note to her friend. I loved her voice. So I kept writing. And somehow a story unfolded. Because when the bell rang and I wrote her leaving the class, I knew she was about to bump into a mysterious and handsome stranger. The rest is history!
2. I read that the original title was Spark, did you consider any other titles for this book, and what caused the change? Ha! You’ve done your research! Basically Dreaming Ansatasia was called Spark for a very long time. But somewhere around the time we entered copy edits, my editor decided that the title didn’t sufficiently brand the book. He wanted readers to pick up the novel and immediately have some sense as to what it’s about. And Spark really didn’t cut it in that regard. Interestingly, Haunted has always been the title of Book 2! So in publishing, anything can happen.
3. What has been the most shocking thing to happen to you since becoming a debut author? Well, the most shocking thing was having my dream of being a published novelist come true and then getting diagnosed with thyroid cancer this past February. That definitely knocked me around for a bit.
4. I love the covers of Dreaming Anastasia, and book 2, Haunted, what did you think when you first saw the covers, and the book in print? I fell in huge love with both covers as soon as I saw them. Although I loved the HAUNTED cover more immediately because it was so absolutely what I’d seen in my head that it was uncanny. The DA cover actually evolved some; Ethan was not originally on the cover! But we’re all glad that the art department decided he needed to be added.
5. Can you tell us a little more about where this series will go, how many books, and what you are currently working on? Well, I hope to be able to do a third book in the relatively near future. Here’s the blurb for book 2, HAUNTED: Anne Michaelson’s world turned upside down last year when handsome, blue-eyed and temporarily immortal Russian Ethan Kozninsky showed up. Now six months later, Anne still has powers she doesn’t fully understand. She’s still dreaming about Baba Yaga’s forest. And she’s definitely still got feelings for Ethan, even though she’s got a new boyfriend—the very normal and very sweet lifeguard Ben Logan. But things are about to get even more complicated. There’s a wicked Russian folklore mermaid stalking Anne. With her heart torn between Ben and Ethan, Anne’s search for the rusalka’s identity reveals deep and startling secrets — including the true source of Anne’s powers. As the romance heats up, so does the danger. Will Anne’s powers be enough to help the rusalka get what she wants? Or will the longings of her own heart get in the way?
Dreaming Anastasia by Joy Preble Publisher: Sourcebooks Reading Level: Young Adult Paperback: 310 pages Series: Dreaming Anastasia, book #1 What really happened to Anastasia Romanov? Instead, two gnarled old hands reached for her. When she wakes up she discovers that she is in the ancient hut of the witch Baba Yaga, and that some things are worse than being dead. I’ve been scared many times – that breathless, stomach dropping sensation that comes with illness, being broke, doing poorly on a test or at a job; worry that my child might be in trouble of one sort or another – the normal stuff, really. But the spookiest true event I’ve ever experienced happened for about two weeks straight not long after my mother passed away from a sudden heart attack. Her death was totally unexpected; we’d spoken in the morning and by the afternoon she was gone. It would be a long time before I came to terms with it. We’d had a routine, my mom and I. Every afternoon around five o’clock, either she’d call me or I’d call her. Usually I was home by then – trying to figure out dinner or supervising my son’s homework or whatever it is one does after a day of teaching and parenting and life. We’d talk for five minutes or ten or sometimes longer. I don’t remember what we said to each other; I doubt it was anything special. But it was a given. Somewhere between five and six in the evening, we connected. If the phone rang then, I knew without looking at caller id that it would be her. Maybe when someone dies so abruptly, things are different. I don’t claim to know or understand. But the week after the funeral, around five thirty, my land line rang. When I picked it up, no one was there. It wasn’t a dial tone or a wrong number. It was just dead air until I hung up. It didn’t happen again that night. But the next evening, the phone rang. Same thing – just silence. I pressed the receiver to my ear and said hello. But no one answered. Every evening for the next two weeks – and I swear this is true – my phone rang. Every evening there was silence. Eventually, it stopped. I’ve chosen to believe that maybe she just wasn’t quite ready to go. Because what other explanation is there? Two weeks of phone malfunction? Two weeks of merry pranksters? Or my mother – reaching out to say hello, a few last times before she finally slipped away. Joy Preble

Things I Can't Forget by Miranda Kenneally Published: Sourcebooks Fire (March 1st, 2013) Reading Level: Young Adult Paperback: 320 pages Series: Hundred Oaks, #3 Rating: 4 of 5 stars Summary: Companion to Catching Jordan and Stealing Parker.
Kate has always been the good girl. Too good, according to some people at school—although they have no idea the guilty secret she carries. But this summer, everything is different…
This summer she’s a counselor at Cumberland Creek summer camp, and she wants to put the past behind her. This summer Matt is back as a counselor too. He’s the first guy she ever kissed, and he’s gone from a geeky songwriter who loved The Hardy Boys to a buff lifeguard who loves to flirt--with her.
Kate used to think the world was black and white, right and wrong. Turns out, life isn’t that easy…
Review:
Ah, such a wonderful series. One of my favorite parts of Miranda's Hundred Oaks series is that we stay in the same group of people. No, some of them aren't the best of friends, but they are all connected in some way.
In Things I Can't Forget we meet Kate. Kate is the ultimate good girl. She goes to church, doesn't drink, have sex, cuss, etc. But she does have one secret and it is eating her up inside. She goes to Cumberland Creek camp as a counselor and hopes to escape the thoughts tormenting her about her best friend back home and what she helped her do.
While at the camp we meet Matt. But Matt and Kate do have a bit of a past at the camp. It was nice to hear how they had met and what they were like as kids. Matt is a wonderful character. He was so kind and understanding. I felt that he accepted people no matter what.
Kate was difficult to like. She's very very judgmental. She's a pretty hardcore Christian and this makes her pretty much pick everything apart. She's always reminding people about what they are doing wrong. She's a bit of a prude too. I tried to understand that this was just how she was raised but this just made getting to know her a bit difficult. I wanted to slap her on a few occasions.
Over time, the people at camp really show her that not all things are cookie-cutter. Sometimes people don't have the best upbringing and they may have reasons for being snarky or angry. One of the best lessons in this comes from Parker, who we meet in Stealing Parker. She is a great reminder of how life can throw you a curveball and how you have to deal with what comes. It's so nice to see these connections throughout the series.
This is a wonderful continuation of the Hundred Oaks series. The religious themes were a bit more obvious in this book but it definitely didn't dominate it. After a while it was easier to see how Kate was changing and learning to accept people for who they were. I can't wait for the next story!

Truly, Madly, Deadly by Hannah Jayne Published: Sourcebooks Fire (July 2nd, 2013) Reading Level: Young Adult Paperback: 272 pages Rating: 4 of 5 stars Summary: Sawyer Dodd has it all. She's a star track athlete, choir soloist, and A-student. And her boyfriend is the handsome all-star Kevin Anderson. But behind the medals, prom pictures, and perfect smiles, Sawyer finds herself trapped in a controlling, abusive relationship with Kevin. When he dies in a drunk-driving accident, Sawyer is secretly relieved. She's free. Until she opens her locker and finds a mysterious letter signed by"an admirer" and printed with two simple words:"You're welcome."
Review:
I rarely read suspense books but I was completely hooked after reading this summary. It sounded so good and mysterious so I couldn't wait to read it. This book definitely doesn't disappoint! From the outside, it looks as if Sawyer has the perfect life. She's beautiful, popular, athletic, and has the perfect boyfriend. When this book begins, Sawyer has just lost her boyfriend Kevin. He was killed in a car accident.
The surprising part is that secretly, Sawyer is relieved that he's dead. When we first meet her she is dealing with the aftermath of his passing but she's also giving us glimpses into what her life was like with him. Kevin was abusive and it's something Sawyer hid.
Once she goes back to school she finds the mysterious note in her locker and she immediately thinks it could be someone referring to Kevin's accident. After the note there are a few more strange things happening to Sawyer. She does eventually turn to the cops but it doesn't really help much. During this time, she does meet a new guy at school, Cooper. I loved Cooper but was happy to see that these characters didn't fall into insta-love. This story really does mainly focus on the murder mystery aspect.
It was frustrating that Sawyer didn't really trust any friends enough to let them know what was going on. During the story I felt that she was mostly isolated, even thought she did have some close friends. But, even with that, I was hooked in this story till the very end. Hannah Jayne did a fabulous job developing a wonderful character we feel bad for and root for till the very end.
I didn't feel this book was predictable at all. I had no idea who the killer was or why they were doing it. I will definitely be picking up the next YA book by Hannah Jayne!

Divergent by Veronica Roth Katherine Tegen Books (May 3rd, 2011)
Who: Beatrice Prior (Tris Why: Tris was incredibly strong and determined. She went away from what she had known and picked a difficult path. But once she got there, she always gave 100% of herself. Read My Review Add it to Goodreads Summary: In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves… or it might destroy her.
Demonglass by Rachel Hawkins Hyperion Books (March 22nd, 2011)
Who: Sophie Mercer Why: Sophie was an incredible character and not just for her strength. She was hilarious and always found a way to get out of hard situations. She really makes this series shine! Read My Review Add it to Goodreads Summary: Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch.
That was the whole reason she was sent to Hex Hall, a reform school for delinquent Prodigium (aka witches, shapeshifters, and fairies). But that was before she discovered the family secret, and that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.
Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world—the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will destroy her powers.
But once Sophie arrives she makes a shocking discovery. Her new friends? They’re demons too. Meaning someone is raising them in secret with creepy plans to use their powers, and probably not for good. Meanwhile, The Eye is set on hunting Sophie down, and they’re using Archer to do it. But it’s not like she has feelings for him anymore. Does she?
Obsidian by Janenifer L. Armentrout Entangled Publishing (December 6th, 2011)
Who: Katy Why: She's a flippin' book blogger!! How can I not love her?? She's a book version of ME and she gets THAT in her life *points to book cover*! It's like a dream come true!: ) Ha! But seriously, she was amazing because she never backed down or pretended to be anyone but herself. Read My Review Add it to Goodreads Summary:Starting over sucks.
When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring… until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.
And then he opened his mouth.
Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something… unexpected happens.
The hot alien living next door marks me.
You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.
If I don’t kill him first, that is.
Stay by Deb Caletti Simon Pulse (April 5th, 2011) Who: Clara Why: Clara was sweet, caring, and very mature for her age because of what she had been through. I liked that she had a great connection with her father and had the strength to leave a difficult situation. Read My Review Add it to Goodreads Summary:Clara's relationship with Christian is intense from the start, and like nothing she’s ever experienced before. But what starts as devotion quickly becomes obsession, and it's almost too late before Clara realizes how far gone Christian is—and what he's willing to do to make her stay. Now Clara has left the city—and Christian—behind. No one back home has any idea where she is, but she still struggles to shake off her fear. She knows Christian won't let her go that easily, and that no matter how far she runs, it may not be far enough…
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi HarperCollins (November 15th, 2011)
Who: Juliette Why: Juliette was just.wow! Even though she had a life no one could imagine, and felt she was a monster, she is able to push through her fears and turn into a very powerful young woman. She completely blew me away! Read My Review Add it to Goodreads Summary:Juliette hasn't touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war-- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.
Catching Jordan by Miranda KenneallySourcebooks Fire (December 1st, 2011) Who: Jordan Why:Jordan was great because she went against the norm, and her father's wishes, in order to pursue her dreams. She never backed down from a challenge and really showed how girls can do absolutely anything.Read My ReviewAdd it to GoodreadsSummary: What girl doesn't want to be surrounded by gorgeous jocks day in and day out? Half-Blood by Janenifer L. Armentrout Spencer Hill Press (October 18th, 2011)
Who: Alex Why: Because, yet again, Janenifer really knows how to create characters! Alex has had a difficult time dealing the various obstacles that arise but she keeps pushing through. She has a lot of qualities I think many people would love to possess. Read My Review Add it to Goodreads Summary: The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck.
Forgotten by Cat Patrick Little, Brown (June 7th, 2011) Who: London Why: London had to go through a lot and she never backed down. She's sweet and smart, and she deals with her memory problems in the best way she can. Read My Review Add it to Goodreads Summary: Each night at precisely 4:33 am, while sixteen-year-old London Lane is asleep, her memory of that day is erased. In the morning, all she can"remember" are events from her future. London is used to relying on reminder notes and a trusted friend to get through the day, but things get complicated when a new boy at school enters the picture. Luke Henry is not someone you'd easily forget, yet try as she might, London can't find him in her memories of things to come. When London starts experiencing disturbing flashbacks, or flash-forwards, as the case may be, she realizes it's time to learn about the past she keeps forgetting-before it destroys her future.
Amplified by Tara Kelly Henry Holt (October 25th, 2011)

She could have easily ran away from the teasing and issues that came up, but she stuck it out and gained more courage each day.
