Elizabeth Valchar--pretty, popular, and rich--wakes up the morning after her eighteenth birthday on the yacht where she'd been celebrating with her closest friends. A persistent thumping noise has roused her. When she goes to investigate, she finds her own drowned body is hitting the side of the boat. Liz is dead.

She has no memory of what happened to her, and can only observe in horror the fallout of her death. She's also soon joined by Alex Berg, a quiet boy from her high school who was killed by a hit-and-run driver. The two keep each other company, floating in and out of memories and trying to piece together the details of what happened to each of them.

In her regular life, Liz was a runner. It wasn't abnormal for her to run 8-10 miles per day. But as memories from closer to her death begin to surface, Liz finds that she'd been running much more than normal, and that she'd all but stopped eating. Liz's mother, who died when Liz was nine, had battled with anorexia as well, and those around her worried Liz was following in her mother's footsteps. But something more sinister was consuming Liz from the inside out..
Review: I was a huge fan of Jessica Warman's book Where the Truth Lies, so I had to read this one once I heard about it. I'm new to books that explore death in this way but I was not disappointed.

Between is from the perspective of a ghost, Liz. Liz just turned eighteen and her and her friends spent a wonderful night on her dad's boat. But then Liz wakes up and soon realizes maybe more happened that night than she can recall because somehow she ended up in the water, dead. But Liz is not alone. Alex is there with her and they soon learn that although they had a similar end, they were completely opposite in life. And, maybe something else unknown is bringing them together in death.

One of the things I liked about this book is that I hated Liz. Yes, that sounds strange. But Liz was not a nice person, at all! She was selfish, cruel, childish, and an all-around mean girl. It's rare to read a book where a character can be hated so much, but enjoyed at the same time. Liz is taken on a journey that explores her death and her life. She soon realizes the errors she made and seems to feel for the pain she caused.

Alex, on the other hand, was incredible! He is a character I just wanted to hug. I felt so horrible for what had happened to him but he was so mature and strong. Alex and Liz had some interesting conversations and they helped build a great foundation for friendship-- even if it was a little late.

Much of this story explores the mystery surrounding Liz's death. She can't remember what happened on the boat, or many of the details of her life. As time passes she slowly puts the pieces together, but in the end, the picture is not a pretty one. I enjoyed getting to know all of the characters in this story. They did seem to represent the"typical" high school mean crowd but a few of them really learn a lot about each other after Liz dies.

Between brings in a heartwrenching story of a boy trying to find peace, and a girl trying to find out who she is. Jessica Warman delivers a book full of twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing until the end.

Review: What can I really say about this series when I'm sure you have all heard how epically awesome it is? If you haven't picked up Perfect Chemistry, do it! This series is one of my all-time favorites and I'm amazed at how Simone Elkeles tells a story. Chain Reaction is packed with passion, danger, and characters you will quickly grow to love.

Chain Reaction introduces us to the youngest of the Fuentes boys, Luis. Aww, Luis is just such a heartwarming character. One of the best things about this series is that we never have to say goodbye to the previous characters. Their stories carry onto the next books flawlessly even though the focus is on a different character. So if you are a fan of Alex and Carlos, don't worry, they are in here as well.

Luis was always the good Fuentes boy. He's smart, determined, and hopeful when it comes to his future. To Luis, nothing is more important than his family and we can easily see the love he has for his mother and brothers. The chapters alternate from Luis's point of view to Nikki's. This is something I really enjoyed throughout the series because sometimes books add too many POV's and it all gets confusing. Simone keeps readers' attention right where it should be.

Nikki has been hurt badly in the past by a boy from the wrong side of town. She has closed herself off from boys in an attempt to keep from getting hurt again. If there is one thing she knows, it's to never date a gang member. But Luis comes in with his unique personality and changes her way of thinking about guys in general. Maybe things are more complicated than they seem when it comes to the gangs. On one hand Luis seems like a typical teenage boy, and on the other he comes off as much more mature and level-headed. For Nikki, it is the first time someone gets through the walls she has built around herself and it scares her.

Of course, like Simone's previous books in this series, the gang is never far away and it seemed that even though Luis wants nothing to do with them, they are after him. The way Simone is able to represent the life of a gang member never fails to amaze me. You can feel the danger and the fear of the characters. The conflict and drama seems so real that it's impossible to not have your heart racing as you read.

As Luis and Nikki try to build their relationship, it seems that danger is always lurking nearby and Luis can't let Nikki get hurt. He is all too familiar with what the gang can do when they don't get their way.

Chain Reaction couldn't have presented a better conclusion for this heartpounding, fiercely romantic series. Simone Elkeles delivers a forbidden romance story in a way I have never witnessed before. Full of intriguing characters, action-packed drama, and alluring romance, the Perfect Chemistry series should not be passed up! You will have no choice but to fall in love with the Fuentes boys.

    Going Vintage by Lindsey Leavitt
    Published: Bloomsbury (March 26th, 2013)
    Reading Level: Young Adult
    Hardcover: 320 pages
    Rating: 5 of 5 stars
    Summary:
When Mallory’s boyfriend, Jeremy, cheats on her with an online girlfriend, Mallory decides the best way to de-Jeremy her life is to de-modernize things too. Inspired by a list of goals her grandmother made in1962, Mallory swears off technology and returns to a simpler time (when boyfriends couldn’t cheat with computer avatars). The List:
    1. Run for pep club secretary
    2. Host a fancy dinner party/soiree
    3. Sew a dress for Homecoming
    4. Find a steady
    5. Do something dangerous
But simple proves to be crazy-complicated, and the details of the past begin to change Mallory’s present. Add in a too-busy grandmother, a sassy sister, and the cute pep-club president–who just happens to be her ex’s cousin–and soon Mallory begins to wonder if going vintage is going too far.
    Review:
This book is so darn CUTE! Mallory is dealing with a cheating boyfriend and his emotional relationship with a girl who has been playing an online game with him. Mallory can't believe that he let a game take over and ruin their relationship. While dealing with this, she is going through some of her grandmother's things and finds a list of goals from back in the 60s. Mallory loves the simplicity of the list and that back then no one had to worry about cellphones, the internet, or computers that could ruin their lives.

Mallory's more simplistic lifestyle definitely isn't easy. Staying away from all technology is proving to be an obstacle. And, not everyone is on board with per Pep Club idea. But, there is Jeremy's cousin Oliver who steps up to be part of the club. Mallory is surprised once she gets to know Oliver and their attachment blossoms.

But this book is much more than a romance. It's really about a young girl who is heartbroken and wants to deal with the heartbreak in the best way possible. The new lifestyle is a type of therapy for her.

Mallory was so witty and funny. She may have let her ideas get a bit insane but she had good intentions. It was fun seeing her deal with day to day life without using the items we take for granted. Oliver really seemed to get her quirky personality and, in the end, she realized that maybe Jeremy wasn't right for her. Maybe she was going through her list for other reasons besides the heartbreak.
This is a great feel-good book that would be a perfect summer read.
