Thank you very much for having me on your wonderful blog today! I am honored to be here and excited to share some exclusive information about the main characters of my new novel, ReVamped!

Age: 19 in 2015 Birthday: July 5th, 1996. Birthplace: Undisclosed, USA Eyes: Violet Hair: Brown, Long, Wavy Height: 5’6 Dawn is a special kind of vampire—a Born. In total, only about five vampires are born in the world in every generation. A Born vampire is stronger than any Made vampire, and ages and grows just like a human child until she gives birth to her own offspring. Dawn doesn’t know much about her mother (who died in childbirth) or her past, and throughout the novel, we find out that her father has guarded some very monumental secrets from her. Dawn had spent her entire life within the confines of the Scarlet House (her vampire father’s presidential headquarters). She had always dreamed of being allowed to venture out on her own mission, and is ecstatic when she’s finally tasked with revamping a group of four misfits into strong and powerful guardians of a little town called Angel Creek. Her father had ensured that she has had the best academic and combat training, but being sheltered from the outside world prevented Dawn from having much of a social life. She’s is very shy and guarded around guys, so when she ventures out into Angel Creek and meets Ethan and Sebastian, it’s not surprising that they turn her world upside down. Dawn is very caring when it comes to her friends—she constantly puts others ahead of herself. While the misfits drive her crazy on more occasion than one, she always comes to their aid whenever necessary.

Vampire – Made Age: 21 in 2015 Birthday: November 18th, 1853. Turned: July 7th, 1875. Birthplace: Angel Creek, USA Eyes: Light Grey Hair: Black, Longish, Curly Height: 6’2 Before Dawn ever meets Sebastian, Hannah, the gossipy waitress from the Angel Creek Diner, has this to say about him: “Sebastian York is a twenty-one year-old Scorpio. He has gorgeous light gray eyes, the color of sparkling glaciers. His midnight-black hair is slightly curly, and just long enough to make you daydream about running your fingers through his locks. He’s super tall and really, really hot. Just try to peel your eyes away from all those lean muscles! Yum! He’s brooding, mysterious, strong, and self-deprecating (or at least, he seems like the type)—the perfect vampire!” However, upon meeting him, Dawn doesn’t receive the best first impression of Sebastian. He’s rude, moody, and clearly wants nothing to do with her or her mission in Angel Creek. Throughout the novel, we find out that there is much more to Sebastian than meets the eye. His ties to Angel Creek, and even Dawn herself are essential to Dawn discovering more about her past. Soon, she finds herself falling for him despite her desire to stay away, but Sebastian’s secrets may shatter her world.

Age: 23 in 2015 Birthday: July 24th, 1992. Birthplace: Dallas, Texas, USA Eyes: Hazel Hair: Blond, Short Height: 5’11 The moment Dawn meets the cute, kind Angel Creek bartender, she’s completely smitten with him. So much so that she even forgets how to talk! Everything about Ethan is effortless, warm, and safe. However, as we learn more about the seemingly perfect Ethan, we discover that he’s harboring some very dark secrets that could be detrimental to both Dawn’s mission and her safety.

    The Misfits

Vampire – Made Age: 17 in 2015 (Forever) Birthday: March 29th, 1942. Turned: May 10th, 1960. Birthplace: Sacramento, California, USA Eyes: Dark Blue Hair: Blonde, Shoulder-Length, Straight, Bangs Height: 5’5 Brooke has spent most of her vampire life travelling around the country, enrolling in countless high-schools, and vying for cheer captain spots and prom queen crowns. While at first glance, she seems like a shallow, boy-crazy girl (and one some extent she is), she’s also haunted by her past. Her father had abandoned her for his political career, so ever since then, Brooke has been trying to cling on to the only thing that brings her a sense of comfort and stability—the quest for popularity. Brooke is the type of character you will either love or love to hate, but as the series develops, we will see her grow and mature as she faces certain challenges. There is also a rumor that there may be an unexpected romantic interest in her future!

Vampire – Made Age: 18 in 2015 (Forever) Birthday: April 17th, 1900. Turned: August, 9th, 1918. Birthplace: Hartford, Connecticut, USA Eyes: Dark Brown Hair: Black, Bun Height: 5’0 Sophie is a sweet, shy girl. She has been a vampire since the 1920’s and currently works at the Angel Creek Library. She is very smart and loves to read, but she’s not the greatest vampire. In fact, she knows very little about her kind, so her transformation into one of Angel Creek’s guardians is a slow and laborious one. Sophie was turned by her best friend, Charlotte—a girl she considered to be her sister. However, due to the fact that Sophie was of lower status in society, Charlotte broke off their relationship when it came time to choose between inheriting her family’s wealth or her friendship with Sophie. Sophie still harbors a deep love for Charlotte, despite the fact that it has been almost a hundred years since she has last seen her.

Vampire – Made Age: 21 in 2015 (Forever) Birthday: October, 16th, 1961. Turned: June 23rd, 1983. Birthplace: Owensboro, Kentucky, USA Eyes: Green Hair: Brown (Blue and Green Streaks, Red Tips), Long, Ponytail Height: 6’1 Hunter’s motto in life is “the louder, the faster, the better”. He’s an ex-80’s rock star who, even after being turned by a vampire groupie, hasn’t abandoned his bad-boy ways. When Dawn first meets him, she finds out that Hunter has been drinking the blood of drunks and junkies and has no plans for being reformed. Dawn is not only tasked with running a homemade rehab program for him, but also has to find a way to get him on board as one of Angel Creek’s guardians.

Vampire – Made Age: 16 in 2015 (Forever) Birthday: March 3rd, 1999. Turned: June 25th, 2015. Birthplace: Angel Creek, USA Eyes: Dark Brown Hair: Black, Short Height: 5’8 Seth is the youngest member of the group—both in human and in vampire years. He had been turned only two weeks before Dawn arrives to Angel Creek for her mission, by none other than Brooke herself! While most people in society admire vampires, Seth’s family is against “the fad”. Therefore, Seth must hide his transformation from his parents, while training with Dawn and learning about his new abilities (which are few and far between—his five-year-old brother can still beat him up)!

Who is Aurora, you ask? You’ll have to read ReVamped to find out! I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse into some of ReVamped’s characters! ReVamped is only the first book in the series—an introduction to the characters. In the upcoming books, we will learn much more about the characters’ pasts, as well as witness development in their personalities and love lives!; ) If you have read the book, I would love to know: “Who is your favorite member of the ReVamped gang?”

  • Haunted Halloween with Anastasia Hopcus

    Haunted Halloween with Anastasia Hopcus

    By: Anastasia Hopcus

For several years I have been intrigued by the Kirkbride asylums. Named for Dr. Thomas Kirkbride, who conceived of the then-innovative plan for caring for the mentally ill, these institutions were built in several parts of the United States during the nineteenth century. Unfortunately, many of these grand Gothic structures, like the most famous one in Danvers, Massachusetts, have been torn down. So when I read that there was a Kirkbride asylum in Weston, West Virginia, that had been purchased and turned into a museum, I had to take a side trip to see it on my way home from the Book Expo in NYC this summer.

My boyfriend Brent and I barely made it in time for the last guided tour of the day. It was late in the afternoon, and shadows were already falling over the old compound, which added to the silent, eerie feel of the place. I took a ton of pictures, as I tend to do, and one view that particularly intrigued me was of the double doors of the medical center across the courtyard. It was an imposing but decaying building of red brick, with a set of weathered white double doors, both shut. I definitely wanted a picture of that, but when I aimed my camera and pressed the button, it didn't click. I tried several more times, but it would not work. Puzzled, I looked at the camera and saw that the battery was out of juice. It wasn't an old battery, but, I reasoned, I had taken lots of pictures over the course of my trip.
Still wanting to get the shot, I put in a new battery and tried again. Once again the camera would not work. A second time. A third time. Finally, it clicked, but the whir of the shutter went on… and on. I still wasn't sure whether I had actually gotten a picture, but I moved on, not wanting to delay the group any further.

But that night, as I sat in our motel room, looking through the pictures I had taken that afternoon, I came upon the photo of the medical center with its set of closed double white doors, and as I looked at it, a chill ran down my spine:

Who---or what had opened that door? And why had I not seen it?

After stepping on campus, Phe immediately realizes that there’s something different about this place—an unexplained epidemic that decimated the town in the 1700s, an ancient and creepy cemetery, and gorgeous boy Zach—and somehow she’s connected to it all.

But the more questions she asks and the deeper she digs, the more entangled Phe becomes in the haunting past of Shadow Hills. Finding what links her to this town… might cost her her life.

Shortly after reviewing "Losing Faith " for Denise Jaden, I received an email from Denise about The Contemps. Since posting these I have had several students ask how they can get in on the "challenge" and what the prizes are. I've had such a great response that I have about six girls coming in after school on Wednesdays to talk about what they are currently reading and how far they have come in the challenge.

This has turned out to be a fantastic classroom activity that has really sparked the interest of my students. I only have one book on my shelf right now, "The DUFF," but students have really gone out of their way to find these books, at least the ones already released.

My class and I will be participating in this challenge, will you?

  • Tour Guest Post: Vanish and Sweet Venom

Tour Guest Post: Vanish and Sweet Venom

Today is the release day for 2 amazing books -- Sweet Venom and Vanish.
To celebrate this, Tera Lynn Childs and Sophie Jordan are here today to share some of their favorite romantic novels.

Favorite Romantic Novels Favorite Romantic Books by Tera Lynn Childs

Romantic books have been such a big part of my life and my career, it’s hard to narrow this down to a manageable list. I have about fifty romances on my forever keepers shelves. But if I have to pick some favorites, here goes:

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I first read this in my freshman Lit Hum class at Columbia and it turned my world upside-down. Here was a book I loved—swoon, Darcy, swoon—and it was considered important enough to be studied in an Ivy League literature class. This is the moment that I realized a book can be both popular and important. And a romance novel, to boot.

The Magic of You by Johanna Lindsey. When I first decided to try this whole writing thing, I literally devoured the romance section at my local bookstore. Johanna Lindsey was my first auto-buy author. She is the master of The Moment, that line that just takes your breath away. In this book, it’s Warren (after Amy’s been chasing him the entire book) saying, “You can’t give up on me!”

The Duke and I by Julia Quinn. I cannot begin to describe in a few sentences how much I love this book. It is just one of the most powerful romances I’ve ever read. Julia Quinn is genius at creating characters who absolutely cannot possibly make it work, and then making it work. Simon and Daphne are a close second to Darcy and Elizabeth for my favorite romantic couple of all time. I dare anyone to read this book and not cry a dozen times. I always do.

Favorite Romantic Books by Sophie Jordan

What’s my favorite romantic book!?!?! Wow – that’s like asking a food junkie to pick her fav dish (which would be tough for me, too)! There are just so many choices – especially since romance has been my favorite genre for so long. Okay, here’s my list: The Magic of You by Johanna Lindsey. It’s a historical romance featuring one of the strongest, take-charge heroines ever! It’s really a stand-out historical romance. When I first read it years ago it felt so new and fresh. And when I reread it now, I can still say the same thing. It has that universal, timeless appeal.

Second choice would probably be … Gentle Rogue by Johanna Lindsey. Another historical romance. The books are connected, too. I just love the tension of a girl disguising herself as a boy. Oh, the fireworks when the truth is revealed! Hm, contemporary romance would have to go to Susan Elizabeth Phillips’s Nobody’s Baby But Mine. It features an outrageous premise … but is an amazingly emotional and very “real” story. My favorite romantic suspense novel is Linda Howard’s Open Season – it has the perfect balance of suspense and romance, but at its core it’s an ugly duckling story. I know these qualify as my favorites because they’re all books I’ve read multiple times. That’s always my gauge.

As for young adult novels … hm, there are so many where the romance is really strong and at the core. They might as well be called a young adult romance. I’ll choose The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting and Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. Both books have some hot boys and empathetic, likeable heroines. But it’s no easy road to a happily ever after for these characters. Just like in the adult romance books I listed above, you get tons of agonizing conflict. And in the meantime tons of tension and steamy chemistry that sizzles on every page. These are the titles that pop in my head right off the bat … but ask me a year from now and I’m sure I’ll have new titles to add.

    Vanish by Sophie Jordan
    Publisher: HarperTeen (September 6th, 2011)
    Reading Level: Young Adult
    Hardback: 304 pages
    Series: Firelight #2
To save the life of the boy she loves, Jacinda did the unthinkable: She betrayed the most closely-guarded secret of her kind. Now she must return to the protection of her pride knowing she might never see Will again—and worse, that because his mind has been shaded, Will’s memories of that fateful night and why she had to flee are gone.

Back home, Jacinda is greeted with hostility and must work to prove her loyalty for both her sake and her family’s. Among the few who will even talk to her are Cassian, the pride’s heir apparent who has always wanted her, and her sister, Tamra, who has been forever changed by a twist of fate. Jacinda knows that she should forget Will and move on—that if he managed to remember and keep his promise to find her, it would only endanger them both. Yet she clings to the hope that someday they will be together again. When the chance arrives to follow her heart, will she risk everything for love?

In bestselling author Sophie Jordan’s dramatic follow-up to Firelight, forbidden love burns brighter than ever.

Sweet Venom by Tera Lynn Childs Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books (September 6th, 2011) Reading Level: Young Adult Hardcover: 352 pages Series: Sweet #1 Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.

Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.

Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they're triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters.

These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful gorgon maligned by myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight.

Tera Lynn Childs (Authora neo) is a newly discovered species of author fish who always dreamed of being a mermaid, but never got closer than a career as a competitive swimmer. She loves to spend as much time as possible in and around water (right up until her fingertips turn all pruney) in the vain hope that one day her legs will magically turn into fins. When stuck on land, Authora neo can be found writing in coffee shops across the country, prowling for cool mermaid gear on Etsy, and spending way too much time online. Visit her at http://teralynnchilds.com. Sophie Jordan grew up in the Texas hill country where she wove fantasies of dragons, warriors, and princesses. A former high school English teacher, she's also the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Avon historical romances. She now lives in Houston with her family. When she's not writing, she spends her time overloading on caffeine (lattes and Diet cherry Coke preferred), talking plotlines with anyone who will listen (including her kids), and cramming her DVR with true-crime and reality-TV shows. Sophie also writes paranormal romances under the name Sharie Kohler. Visit her at www.sophiejordan.net.

    Hourglass by Myra McEntire
    Publisher: Egmont USA
    Reading Level: Young Adult
    Hardcover: 397 pages
    Source: Publisher
    Series: Hourglass #1
    Rating: 5 of 5 stars
One hour to rewrite the past..

For seventeen-year-old Emerson Cole, life is about seeing what isn’t there: swooning Southern Belles; soldiers long forgotten; a haunting jazz trio that vanishes in an instant. Plagued by phantoms since her parents’ death, she just wants the apparitions to stop so she can be normal. She’s tried everything, but the visions keep coming back.
So when her well-meaning brother brings in a consultant from a secretive organization called the Hourglass, Emerson’s willing to try one last cure. But meeting Michael Weaver may not only change her future, it may change her past.
Who is this dark, mysterious, sympathetic guy, barely older than Emerson herself, who seems to believe every crazy word she says? Why does an electric charge seem to run through the room whenever he’s around? And why is he so insistent that he needs her help to prevent a death that never should have happened?
Review: Holy buttered biscuits and gravy this book was AWESOME! You may ask"but isn't this just like any other book where a girl sees ghosts?"… to which I reply"HECK NO! Are you crazy?!?!" Hourglass was fabulous from start to finish. The writing, the characters, the boyssss *swoon*, the setting… all magical!

Emerson can see spirits and even ghostly scenes but her ability turns out to be much more than that. Her brother hires someone to help her deal with what's happening to her. That happens to be Michael.ahhh… Michael. Micheal works for the Hourglass and he knows all about what Emerson can do, because he can do it too. They have an instant, sizzling connection that Michael can't fight off. Don't fight Michael, just give in!

First, I gotta say that Emerson was one of the best characters ever! Not only was she sweet and caring, but she was strong, brave, and protective of her friends and family. Loved her! I can't picture anyone else as the main character of this story. I don't know how Myra did it but her characters just jumped right out of the page and into my heart. They seemed so real. I never questioned anything about their personality. Even the"not so nice" people were written perfectly.

Michael made me giggle, a lot. Some of his interactions with Emerson were hilarious. It seemed that poor Emerson got into some sticky situations but Michael was always there to help her out. It was easy to see how passionate Michael was about his work, friends, and especially Emerson.

The southern aspects of Emerson's personality and the setting were wonderful to see. Maybe it's where I live in Tennessee too but I cracked up so many times after reading things Emerson did or said. Certain situations really brought out the"southern" in her.

The plot was full of twists and turns and other things I would have never expected. There's also a ton of mystery and action. The side characters made everything about this book seem whole and complete. One of my favorites would have to be Kaleb *swoon*. Kaleb had this bad-boy personality in some ways, but in other ways he was just someone going through a lot of pain. Even with that, I couldn't help but smile every time he spoke. Kaleb and Emerson had an interesting love/hate/love relationship. Kaleb is exactly the type of male character I simply can't resist!

Hourglass was a wild ride through a mysterious plot that readers can't help but enjoy. The multidimensional characters, unique twists, and witty dialogue make this the perfect paranormal read! I can't wait to see what happens next.

Review: Raised by Wolves by Janenifer Lynn Barnes

Raised by Wolves by Janenifer Lynn Barnes Publisher: Egmont USA (June 8th, 2010) Reading Level: Young Adult Hardcover: 418 pages Series: Raised by Wolves, book #1 Source: ARC from Publisher Rating: 5 of 5 stars Adopted by the Alpha of a werewolf pack after a rogue wolf brutally killed her parents right before her eyes, fifteen-year-old Bryn knows only pack life, and the rigid social hierarchy that controls it. That doesn't mean that she's averse to breaking a rule or two.

But when her curiosity gets the better of her and she discovers Chase, a new teen locked in a cage in her guardian's basement, and witnesses him turn into a wolf before her eyes, the horrific memories of her parents' murders return. Bryn becomes obsessed with getting her questions answered, and Chase is the only one who can provide the information she needs.

But in her drive to find the truth, will Bryn push too far beyond the constraints of the pack, forcing her to leave behind her friends, her family, and the identity that she's shaped?
Review: It's no secret that I am a huge werewolf fan so when I read the summary of this book I had to have it! I was not disapointed. Bryn was raised by the pack after her parents were killed when she was young. The rules and power of the pack are all she knows. One thing she tries to keep private are her emotions. Although she is connected to the pack through her bond with the alpha, she resist giving in to the bond.
Soon Bryn notices that something is being kept from her and she is determined to find out what it is. Callum, the alpha, tries to keep a tight reign on Bryn but she often bends and breaks the rules. Eventually she discovers what Callum has been keeping a secret; a young boy who is a newly turned werewolf. This opens the door to new memories for Bryn as she sorts through the details of what happened to her parents and what other secrets the pack has been hiding.
These questions lead Bryn to test her limits with the pack and learn as much about the stranger in the basement as she learns about herself. Raised by Wolves is a unique story with outstanding characters that will keep your interest at it's peak. Bryn is an amazingly strong character who is smart, kind, determined, and a tad bit stubborn. The world where the wolves reside was fascinating to me. Janenifer Lynn Barnes did a fabulous job creating the complexity of the pack and their way of life.
Along with the strength of Bryn, I enjoyed the characters of Chase and Devon. Devon, a wolf who has known Bryn since her arrival with the pack, is hilarious and was a great addition to the story. Chase, the changed wolf, was more of a mystery but I enjoyed his caring interactions with Bryn. One thing these wolves had in common was their fierce protectiveness of Bryn and it showed throughout the story. Another critical aspect of this story involved Ali, Bryn's surrogate mother. As much as I could understand how Bryn's fiery personality was influenced by the pack, it was strongly influenced by Ali as well.
Raised by Wolves is full of action and suspense that is woven in the lives of these characters. Bryn's quest for answers takes her to places she never expected with unlikely allies. This is honestly one of the best werewolf books I have read and I can't wait for the sequel!

    EXCERPT
I step into his personal space and lift my hands to his shoulder blades. I press my palms to his muscular back. His head falls forward and his chest fully inflates as he draws in a deep breath. It’s the reassuring sign that I need from him. My tongue darts from my mouth and makes a pass over my lips. I lean forward and drop one chaste kiss in the middle of his back.
“Baby, please,” I croon. “Talk to me!”
He whirls around to face me, taking me by surprise. “What do you want from me?!”
“I-I just want you to talk to me. I want to make sure we’re on the same page as far as we are concerned,” I sputter out, looking to him for the words I need to hear.
“Josephine, we aren’t on the same page. Actually, I don’t even think we’re in the same book.” The way he says it is exhaustive, like I’m irritating him or something. It cuts me like a white-hot knife. “I’m not myself; I’m out of control and I don’t know how to come back.” He runs those big hands through his disheveled hair and the expression on his handsome face is one of hopelessness. I know the look well.
I step closer to him and reach for his hand. “Before you walked into my life, I felt the floor crumbling beneath my feet. Then you showed up and I had something to hold onto. Let me do the same for you. At least let me try. Please.”

Tour: Character Question with Kyler from FRIGID by J.Lynn

I just read Frigid a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved it!! Kyler was so swoon-worthy and Syd was his perfect match!
Today I have Kyler here for a question as part of the blog tour.

    12. Ever have those superhero fantasies? What superhero do you wish you could be, even for only one day? Why that hero and those powers?
I think I would be Thor. Not only is he a god who wields a hammer and can kick everyone’s ass with his bare hands, he also gets to hook up with Natalie Portman in the movie. I think I’d be okay with that.

You can check out a video of ALL of Kyler's questions he was asked by visiting StuckInBooks tomorrow, 7/26

Frigid by Janenifer. L. Armentrout Published: July 15th, 2013 (Spencer Hill Press) Reading Level: New Adult For twenty-one-year-old Sydney, being in love with Kyler isn't anything new. They'd been best friends ever since he pushed her down on the playground and she made him eat a mud pie. Somewhere over the years, she fell for him and fell hard. The big problem with that? Kyler puts the 'man' in man-whore. He's never stayed with a girl longer than a few nights, and with it being their last year in college, Syd doesn't want to risk their friendship by declaring her love.

Kyler has always put Syd on a pedestal that was too high for him to reach. To him, she's perfect and she's everything. But the feelings he has for her, he's always hidden away or focused on any other female. After all, Kyler will always be the poor boy from the wrong side of tracks, and Syd will always be the one girl he can never have.

But when they're stranded together at a posh ski resort due to a massive Nor'easter, there's nothing stopping their red-hot feelings for each other from coming to the surface. Can their friendship survive the attraction? Better yet, can they survive at all? Because as the snow falls, someone is stalking them, and this ski trip may be a life-changer in more ways than one.
