Nonfiction Recommendations for HS Students — The Poll Is In!

A few weeks months ago I asked for your opinion: what books would you recommend to my students. I had a fantastic response. If my stats for that post are any indication, this question has been asked many times before and people, especially teachers, are still looking for those great recommendations. Well, after asking my mom (a school librarian) and the librarian at my school, I'm finally making public what we have put together. I'm pretty sure everybody can find something on this list; I know that nonfiction is an area I need to work on as well and as I'm expecting one nonfiction read from my students by the end of the semester I've set the same standard for myself.

  • Review: FROM ASHES by Molly McAdams

Review: FROM ASHES by Molly McAdams

    From Ashes by Molly McAdams
Published: William Morrow (December 11th, 2012)
    Reading Level: New Adult
    Kindle edition: 416 pages
    Rating: 4 of 5 stars
    Summary:
Aside from her dad, who passed away when she was six, Cassidy Jameson has only ever trusted one man: her best friend, Tyler. So of course she follows him to Texas when he leaves for college. She just didn't expect to be so drawn to their new roommate, Gage, a gorgeous guy with a husky Southern drawl. The only problem? He's Tyler's cousin.

Gage Carson was excited to share an apartment off campus with his cousin. He didn't mind that Tyler was bringing the mysterious friend he'd heard about since they were kids … until the most beautiful girl he's ever seen jumps out of his cousin's Jeep. There's something about Cassi that makes Gage want to give her everything. Too bad Tyler has warned him that she's strictly off-limits.

Despite everything keeping them apart, Cassi and Gage dance dangerously close to the touch they're both been craving. But when disaster sends her running into Tyler's arms, Cassi will have to decide whether to face the demons of her past … or to burn her chance at a future with Gage.

    Review:

I picked up this book after reading, and loving, Taking Chances. I was literally in tears throughout that book and had very high expectations for this one. It didn't have quite the same appeal to me as Taking Chances but it was still a very enjoyable read.

Cassi and Tyler have been friends forever. He has been a rock for her. Once he decides to go to college she wants to follow him. She can't attend but she just can't stand the thoughts of giving up Tyler. Cassi has had a horrible life with lots of abuse. Tyler was the only thing that kept her safe so she doesn't want to give that up.

Once they get to town, they move in with Tyler's cousin Gage. Gage is wonderful and I really loved his character. He was sweet, kind, and great for Cassi. They do fall for each other pretty quickly though. But I tried to overlook that and just chalk it up to Cassi's need for affection.

The real issue I had with this book was Tyler. I didn't like him at all. He was terrible and completely cruel to Cassi on several occasions. I guess that I didn't really expect that since he knew her past better than anyone. He does some things that are just completely unforgivable.

Overall, this was a good book but I did think it could have been better with a few changes. Molly's writing is really great but some of the plot twists and character aspects just brought it down a bit for me. Either way, I'll still be picking up anything she writes in the future.
