Tour: Excerpt — NEW MONEY by Lorraine Zago Rosenthal

I have Lorraine Zago Rosenthal here today to talk about her newest book, New Money.

I'm part of the blog tour and I have an exclusive excerpt from the book below.

Tina had a constant cash flow, but unlike most of the girls I’d grown up with, she’d never been snooty about the fact that I didn’t. She nodded, the light changed, and she hit the gas. “You mean you need money to get your car fixed? Don’t worry about that… I’ll take you anywhere you want to go.”

“I know. I appreciate it, but I’m not going to keep imposing on you. I need my own car, and I also need to help Mom. Business has been slow… the bills are piling up.”

Tina drove me to an upscale outdoor mall where I handed in applications at Sephora and Banana Republic and eight other stores before catching up with her at the bridal shop where we’d planned to meet. She was leaning against its front window and twirling her hair.

“Maybe I should apply here,” I said, peeking in the window. Tina was covering part of it, and all I could see was half of a mannequin dressed in a white organza gown.

She shook her head. “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

I kept trying to look into the store, but she blocked me. “Why isn’t it a good idea? And what are you doing?” I asked impatiently. “Get out of the way.”

She folded her arms over her low-cut blouse and didn’t move. “Forget this place, Savannah. It’s filled with snobby women like my stepmother. You don’t want to work here.” She draped an arm around my shoulders, shoved my head down so I was staring at cement, and led me away.

The smell of her mango perfume was suffocating in the heat, and I wasn’t in the mood for whatever game she was playing. I disconnected myself from her and headed back to the store.

She tried to stop me, but it was too late. I stared through the bridal shop’s window at a pretty redhead admiring her reflection in a full-length mirror. She wore a flowing wedding dress, and her mother and a saleslady beamed at her. She looked like a princess. Cinderella. Somebody’s dream.

I swallowed. This was why Tina had tried to keep me away.

She was beside me. “It doesn’t matter. It isn’t what you wanted.”

That’s what I’d thought two years ago, when Jamie bought a diamond ring and asked me to marry him. He was in law school at the University of South Carolina then. He’d wanted to tie the knot when he graduated, buy a house in a fancy area nearby called Mount Pleasant—where Tina lived—and have babies, in his own words, ASAP.

Only that wasn’t what I wanted. I wanted to go places, see things, and write award-winning novels that would fly off bookstore shelves. I’d thought that none of those things would happen if I became what he expected: a stay-at-home mom who ate lunch with attorneys’ wives and spent her free time getting massages and manicures.

It had been so hard to end it. But he just wouldn’t wait, and I couldn’t blame him. I knew how it felt to want things. The problem was that lately, I’d been thinking that everything I wanted was never going to happen. I’d been wondering if I’d made a terrible mistake.

“I didn’t know they were getting married so soon,” I said, my voice raw and tight. But I should have known. Jamie had graduated recently. Maybe I’d been blocking it out.

I’d heard about the engagement a while back. The bride was a girl from my high school class who’d been on the cheerleading squad with me and Tina, but Jamie was a year ahead of us and had barely known her then. Now she worked as a paralegal at a law office downtown, and the rumor was that they’d hooked up when he clerked there.

“Yeah,” Tina said. “I heard about it last week.”

I turned away from the window. “Thanks for not telling me.”

She smiled. The bells on the bridal’s shop door jangled, the door swung open, and there was the redhead with the saleslady calling after her, nervously warning against stepping outside because the sidewalk would dirty her hem.

The bride went by two first names. She’d been one of those pageant contestants with a pushy mother who’d dressed her up in high heels and a thick layer of makeup like a six-year-old prostitute. She’d also been my nemesis from eighth through eleventh grade. Now she gave me a phony smile and spoke in a sugary voice as she lingered in the doorway.

“Savannah, are you stalking me?” she asked.

“Don’t flatter yourself, Eva Lee,” I said.

“Seriously,” Tina added. “Savannah has better things to do.”

Sure, I thought. I have better things to do, like resume my desperate search for a minimum-wage job while this empty-headed debutante gets ready to marry the only guy I’ve ever loved.

New Money by Lorraine Zago Rosenthal

Savannah Morgan had high hopes. She dreamed of becoming a writer and escaping her South Carolina town, where snooty debutantes have always looked down on her. But at twenty-four, she's become a frustrated ex-cheerleader who lives with her mother and wonders if rejecting a marriage proposal was a terrible mistake. Then Savannah's world is shaken when she learns the father she never knew is Edward Stone, a billionaire media mogul who has left Savannah his fortune on the condition that she move to Manhattan and work at his global news corporation. Putting aside her mother's disapproval, Savannah dives head first into a life of wealth and luxury that is threatened by Edward's other children--the infuriatingly arrogant Ned and his sharp-tongued sister, Caroline, whose joint mission is to get rid of Savannah. She deals with their treachery along with her complicated love life, and she eventually has to decide between Jack, a smooth and charming real estate executive, and Alex, a handsome aspiring writer/actor. Savannah must navigate a thrilling but dangerous city while trying to figure out what kind of man her father truly was.

New Money is a keenly observed, exciting peek into a world of privilege and glamour with a spirited and charming heroine at its center.

Haunted Halloween with Shannon Delany and a giveaway!

    Dark and Dangerous?
Shannon Delany (author of the 13 to Life series, http://www.ShannonDelany.com)
I’ve gone back and forth about this post (and back and forth) again and again. Do I tell them about my potentially magical dog? The scariest thing about him is the sheer volume of pee he produces. Sure, there’s a weird story that goes along with how we got him, but is it scary? No. “What about one of the weird things that happened at college?” my husband suggested. After I finished laughing (there was so much weird about my time in college… ) I said, “No.” Weird is weird. Scary is—the first day of teaching middle school students. But that didn’t seem suitable either. So I’m wussing out and telling you about something that really happened to me (in college) and scared me in a strange way. Even now I sometimes think back and wonder. I hung out with a unique crowd. We spent a lot of time at Renaissance Faires and events like the Pennsic Wars where we—um—learned odd skills. Tarot? Sure. Sword-fighting? Yep. Traditional dances and bawdy ballads? Yes. And I was tremendously curious because of all that. So it was only natural (in a way) that eventually I’d want to see someone beyond the “circuit” who might read my cards or tell me something I couldn’t guess about my future. There was a very well-respected psychic in a nearby town. I did everything I was supposed to. Called for an appointment? Check. Drove over alone? No problem. Had more than enough cash? Well, of course. Business is business. The psychic plied her trade out of a standard suburban house. Nicely manicured lawn, tree out front, covered porch… There were no gaudy trappings—no sign on the front lawn, no flashing neon proclaiming: Palms Read Here. If anything, the place looked too normal. I knocked on the door and waited until a middle-aged woman in a loose-fitting top and slacks welcomed me inside. She was not wearing a turban or a pentacle nor was she heavily tattooed. Soft-spoken, she led me to her sitting room where there were no skulls or crystal balls but just comfortable seats and shelf after shelf of books. I was immediately at ease. “Take a seat,” she suggested and I settled down, waiting. Every card-reader and medium I’d met did things a little differently. “And you’re here for a reading?” “Yes. I’d just like to know a little about my future.” Her nose wrinkled like suddenly she’d gotten a whiff of something distasteful. “Do you--” She cocked her head and looked at the area around my head, squinting. “—do you have a particular question in mind?” Of course I did. But telling her wouldn’t be the best way to test what sort of information she was capable of getting. So I shrugged. “Well then.” She reached over to the table beside her seat and picked up a deck of cards. She began to shuffle them, but her hands slowed, and the cards slowed as she fixed her eyes on me again. “I’m sorry,” she said, setting the cards back in their place beside her, “but I can’t do this reading.” I blinked. “What?” “I really need you to leave now.” I repeated myself. “What?” “My spirit guide is telling me not to do a reading for you. Not to tell you your future.” I sat perfectly still, stunned. My eyes narrowed. “I have money… ” “That’s not it,” she whispered, all the time watching the air around me as much as watching me. “To read your future wouldn’t be… prudent.” “What? Why not?” “Will you leave as soon as I tell you?” she asked, the words just a whisper. “If I have to… ” She nodded. “All I can say is that there is something large and very dark following you. Something that has followed you much longer than you’ve been here.” “Longer than I’ve been here?” I asked, looking around the room. “No. Do you believe in past lives?” I kept my mouth shut. “Well you should. You’ve lived quite a few. And something has followed you from your past to your present. Something dark and dangerous. And my spirit guide is fiercely telling me I can tell you nothing else. You must go. Now.” “Oh—okay.” I stood up and stepped to the door. “Wait.” I dug into my pocket and pulled out the cash I’d intended for her. She waved it away and opened the door to usher me out. “No,” she said about the money. “I want nothing of yours.” I paused just outside the door to shake my head and stuff the bills back into my pocket. “Good luck,” she whispered. Just before she closed the door. And locked it.
And that was that. No reading in which marvelous things about my future were revealed, no crystals, no ghosts… just something that upon further reflection prickled up and down my spine and to this day occasionally makes me wonder if I was ever important enough to be stalked by something dark and dangerous—and if so, why?

"It was fast paced and unpredictable; I sped through this novel while at the same time willing myself to slow down." — Miss Remmers

    From Amazon.com...

"Sixteen-year-old Yara Silva has always known that ghosts walk alongside the living. Her grandma, like the other females in her family, is a Waker, someone who can see and communicate with ghosts. Yara grew up watching her grandmother taunted and scorned for this unusual ability and doesn't want that to be her future. She has been dreading the day when she too would see ghosts, and is relieved that the usually dominant Waker gene seems to have skipped her, letting her live a normal teenage life. However, all that changes for Yara on her first day at her elite boarding school when she discovers the gene was only lying dormant. She witnesses a dark mist attack Brent, a handsome fellow student, and rushes to his rescue. Her act of heroism draws the mist's attention, and the dark spirit begins stalking her. Yara finds herself entrenched in a sixty-year-old curse that haunts the school, threatening not only her life, but the lives of her closest friends as well. Yara soon realizes that the past she was trying to put behind her isn't going to go quietly."

Why I read this: I was offered to participate in an ARC Book Tour, something I'm generally not too crazy about. But after looking at the cover and reading the description, I figured I'd give it a go.

Plot: The plot was what made this book for me. It was absolutely fantastic. It was fast paced and unpredictable; I sped through this novel while at the same time willing myself to slow down. "Intrinsical" is unlike any other book I've read; there were times that the plot was almost too full of depth and I found myself having to back track — but this only added to the plot and was never a waste of time. I did struggle a little bit with the idea of "Wakers"; it could have been explained more thoroughly. The plot of this novel definitely had me thinking and considering all the possibilities.

Characters: I did have a hard time liking the characters; there wasn't any one thing that bothered me or one thing that I would have changed — I just didn't like them. I had a hard time relating to them. I found the language that they used to be slightly unbelievable; for instance, being so completely upset at your best friend with one sentence and completely forgiving and lovable the next sentence. It just seemed a little too "fictional" for my taste there.

Cover: At first glance the cover is interesting, but it isn't until after you've read the novel that you realize the significance.

Final Thoughts: This is definitely a "love" for me, despite is charactorial flaws (I made that word up, but I can't find a "real" word that fits better so I'm leaving it). This a fantastic novel that somehow "slipped" through the mainstream bibliophilic world, but rightfully deserves it's spot in Barnes and Noble (I didn't see it at my local store). "Intrinsical" is one of those amazing book finds that you don't expect. I highly recommend this novel to anyone looking for something unique and different than any other book.

  • Confessions of a Shopaholic — Sophie Kinsella

Confessions of a Shopaholic — Sophie Kinsella

    From Amazon.com...

"Rebecca Bloomwood just hit rock bottom. But she's never looked better...

Becky Bloomwood has a fabulous flat in London's trendiest neighborhood, a troupe of glamorous socialite friends, and a closet brimming with the season's must-haves. The only trouble is that she can't actually afford it — not any of it.

Her job writing at Successful Savings not only bores her to tears, it doesn't pay much at all. And lately Becky's been chased by dismal letters from Visa and the Endwich Bank — letters with large red sums she can't bear to read — and they're getting ever harder to ignore.

She tries cutting back; she even tries making more money. But none of her efforts succeeds. Becky's only consolation is to buy herself something... just a little something...

Finally a story arises that Becky actually cares about, and her front-page article catalyzes a chain of events that will transform her life — and the lives of those around her — forever."

I listened to "Confessions" via an audiobook.

This is going to be an odd review. For most of the audiobook, I simply listened to it because I had nothing else to do. There were times where I had to turn the volume down because I was so embarrassed and ashamed for Becky. So that proves to me that it was a good book, I definitely connected with Becky. But I'm not sure if I want to connect with her.

By this I mean, Becky is probably one of the most flawed characters (no Twilight jokes) I've ever met. Yes Bella and Edward have their "issues," but they at least do things for love of the other (whether it be stalking each other or mishandling a situation with severe depression — okay no more jokes, I promise). But Becky lies to absolutely everyone, I don't even think she knows how to tell the truth (or what the truth is!). For most of the book she hurts everyone she comes into contact with only to advance or save herself.

But that's understandable, protagonists are meant to be flawed so that they can grow (insert Twilight joke here, but really, I'm done). So the last couple of chapters I begin to see all of Becky's lies catch up with her and I see her decide to be better, and she is! But then the ending (don't want to ruin it, so I won't)...

So I guess I'm just a bit frustrated with such a flighty character that showed no growth.

On the other hand, as a light "listen," I enjoyed this book. It was fun seeing what Becky was going to get herself into next. And even I couldn't believe all the bad things that happened to her. I would have loved to see more interaction with Becky and Luke (which is why I'll be listening to the second book).

Yes, you heard me right. I've already interlibrary loaned the second audiobook. The last couple hours I just had to find out what happened and was listening to the book all the time — in the car (obviously), in the shower, while doing homework, while getting ready for school, etc. The narrators British accent made me want to hop a plane the day after graduation and move to Europe. No luggage, no plan. Just move. I was inspired. I was also inspired to get on with my life and that there was life after college. All the "business" talk made me want to purchase my own briefcase.

I warned you this would be an odd review. I shouldn't have liked this book — but I can't help it, I do.

Oh, and I apologize for my Twilight jokes. Read my reviews, I really did like Twilight and I was super excited for the movie to come out. But I'll be the first to point out it's flaws as character development and even plot goes. I mean no offense to anyone.

"This is a fantastic read that's unlike any other I've read. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the werewolf/vampire craze (admit it...) — this is unique read and you'll find yourself on the new pixie craze next!" — Miss Remmers

    From Goodreads...

"Zara White suspects there's a freaky guy semi-stalking her. She's also obsessed with phobias. And it's true, she hasn't exactly been herself since her stepfather died. But exiling her to shivery Maine to live with her grandmother? That seems a bit extreme. The move is supposed to help her stay sane... but Zara's pretty sure her mom just can't deal with her right now.

She couldn't be more wrong. Turns out the semi-stalker is not a figment of Zara's overactive imagination. In fact, he's still following her, leaving behind an eerie trail of gold dust. There's something not right — not human — in this sleepy Maine town, and all signs point to Zara.

In this creepy, compelling breakout novel, Carrie Jones delivers romance, suspense, and a creature you never thought you'd have to fear."

Why I read this: I received an awesome poster at BEA advertising Need, Captivate, and Entice and I figured I had better have these books on my classroom shelves if I was going to hang the poster. So I purchased Need and Captivate. I love the covers, very eye catching.

Plot: It took me a while to get into the plot because it was SO mysterious. I felt like there were a few too many factors left out. When questions started to be answered, I also felt like it was done in a very sneaky way. There were parts I had to reread because I had assumed I missed the big "oh, yea... " moment only to find out that the moment was three chapters ahead. Apart from that, the plot was fast moving, captivating, and addicting. I hated putting this book down. There were some fantastic "twists" in the plot that I never saw coming — never even considered! That doesn't happen a lot! I love the idea of pixies as well, it kind of threw me off at first and I had to overcome the urge to say, "Pixies?! Come on." But it's written so well that by the end I really was afraid of these man-eating, soul-sucking pixies!

Characters: I really connected with Zara, although I dislike the name. Witnessing her father dying and having to leave home to live with her Grandma in unfamiliar territory. Her personality and fear of life was really easy to relate to for me and for I think most people. I loved Nick! I'd love to see him portrayed on the big screen. I really adored Issie and Devyn as well, reading about their cute innocent romance made my day. I hate to admit it, but I really felt for the Pixie King; I don't want to give anything away, but I could see myself liking his character in the next book.

Cover: I adore this cover. When my students saw it on my desk, especially the girls, they were drawn to pick it up and see what it was about.

    Random Thoughts: I love Betty!!

Final Thoughts: This is a fantastic read that's unlike any other I've read. I highly recommend it to any YA reader, but especially to anyone who loves the werewolf/vampire craze (admit it...) — this is unique read and you'll find yourself on the new pixie craze next!

    Dreaming Anastasia — Joy Preble

This week I'd like to (once again) welcome a very good friend of mine, Sheila from One Person's Journey through a World of Books!

    From Amazon.com...

"What really happened to Anastasia Romanov?
Anastasia Romanov thought she would never feel more alone than when the gunfire started and her family began to fall around her. Surely the bullets would come for her next. But they didn't. Instead, two gnarled old hands reached for her. When she wakes up she discovers that she is in the ancient hut of the witch Baba Yaga, and that some things are worse than being dead.
In modern-day Chicago, Anne doesn't know much about Russian history. She is more concerned about getting into a good college—until the dreams start. She is somewhere else. She is someone else. And she is sharing a small room with a very old woman. The vivid dreams startle her, but not until a handsome stranger offers to explain them does she realize her life is going to change forever. She is the only one who can save Anastasia. But, Anastasia is having her own dreams…"
What would you do if your nightmare turned out to be more than just a dream—and the only way to stop it was to believe the impossible? Anastasia Romanov knows she should be dead; she watched her family fall in a hail of gunfire. Instead, something, or someone, saved her. Trapped and scared in a magical hut with a witch who may be friend or foe, she begins to come to grips with the truth about her situation: that some fates are WORSE than death.

In her dreams, sixteen year old Anne Michaelson is somewhere else. She is someone else. The dreams feel as real as her waking life and they terrify her. This is not good for her social life! Aside from that, Anne thinks her life is pretty ordinary – until she runs into handsome, mysterious, and (okay) annoying Ethan on her way to chemistry class. Now Anne has powers she doesn’t understand, a history-altering mission she doesn’t want, and a growing attraction to a blue-eyed stranger that seems to be stalking her! And when Ethan realizes that Anne is the girl he’s been searching for, things start to get a little surreal! Despite her skepticism and reluctance, Anne quickly realizes that you don’t need to be imprisoned to be trapped! Stir in the doomed Duchess Anastasia, who is not quite as dead as the history books say, and the Baba Yaga, a legendary witch from Russian folklore, and you’ve got Dreaming Anastasia by debut novelist Joy Preble.
Joy Preble’s experience with Russian legends developed through her crazy maternal grandmother, who had been one of TWENTY children! The story goes that her grandmother’s family didn’t even notice when she ran off to America at sixteen, married badly, raised four children on her own and was the least grandmotherly of grandmothers a girl could ever hope for (despite her amusing and insane tales of the Bolsheviks and tsars). No warm and fuzzies there, only admonitions for Joy to eat her vegetables so she would be strong enough to survive the impending pogroms!
My Thoughts: This book was a wonderful mix for me – not only as a YA read – but to me it dabbled in so much more. There is history to this book with Baba Yaga and Anastasia Romanov. There is the taste of fantasy and the essence of mystery…. basically it had a lot of my favorite genre’s all roled up into one neat little binding.
I have to say I loved the story line based around Baba Yaga (I love folklore!)

I would rate this a PG13 rating for some language

Brooke Keller is a high school junior who has never spent much time living in one place. She is finally in a town long enough to almost snag the boy of her dreams, until her life is threatened after killing a fanged man in his attempt to kidnap her. Brooke begins a dangerous journey in an effort to find out who is after her and how to stop them. In a world with powerful and prejudiced vampires, Brooke must tap into the side of her that she never knew existed at the risk of losing her life in order to save it.

Review: Okay, seriously, if you are a lover of paranormal YA books with a scorching romance, get this book ASAP!

Debut author Angeline Kace delivers a action-packed paranormal story with remarkable characters, an unpredictable plot, and a steamy romance that will have your heart pounding!

Brooke has had a difficult life and it's been hard for her to get close to anyone since she moves around so often. But she's finally found a best friend, Kaitlynn, and a boy she likes, Jaren. She finally feels like she has some routine to her life and her relationship with Jaren seems to be exactly what she needed.

Then they both have a close encounter with something not human and Brooke realizes she may not be completely human as well. From there she is taken on a wild journey to discover who she truly is. During this time Brooke and Jaren have their issues but it seems they are stuck together in order to stay safe. They are taken away from their homes in order to seek the protection from a group they didn't even know existed.

But in this new vampire world, we meet the wonderful, dangerous, bad boy… Mirko. Ohh, how I love him! He is Brooke's new protector and he doesn't hide the fact that he knows he's hot! Maybe it's a guilty pleasure of mine, but I adore bad boys with an attitude. But not just that.they have to have that soft side that sometimes comes to the surface. Mirko was so rough and intimidating, but around Brooke he seemed to melt. Even with his flirty words, it was easy to see how much he really cared for Brooke.

It may seem that Brooke has an easy choice (*cough* Mirko) but she loved Jaren first and it's hard to forget their times together. And this book isn't just about the total hotness that is Mirko, it had a truly fascinating plot that was full of action! Brooke was a character that you could see grow over time. She didn't back down from what needed to be done. I really enjoyed her strength and courage and seeing her shine throughout the story.

I highly recommend this book! I can't say enough good things about it and I'm already stalking Angeline to find out when book 2 will be released. When you read it, I guarantee you will fall in love. So, who will it be with… are you Team Jaren or Team Mirko?

    Quotes

I just had to add some quotes from the book. I normally don't do this for reviews but these were too darn good to not mention!
Mirko's face hardened."One of these days, you're going to be over that punk and realize you've wanted me all along." (Brooke)"Well, do you have any special powers?""You mean other than looking this good? It's voodoo on the ladies". — Mirko He pulled away from me and cupped my head, stroking my outer ear lobe with his thumb."Please choose me," he pleaded. -Mirko"I'm not going to push you, but I won't back down. You wanna make out, we'll make out. If you allow me to hold you, I'm going to hold you. And don't think I'll hide my feelings for you in front of Jaren."-Mirko

    Crossroads Tour: Joy Preble

    1. Can you explain how you first got the idea for Dreaming Anastasia?

The kernel of the idea for DA came one afternoon when it was raining to hard for me to get to my car after school and I was hanging around my classroom waiting for it let up. This girl characters came to me. She was funny and smart and sarcastic – and she was sitting in history class writing a note to her friend. I loved her voice. So I kept writing. And somehow a story unfolded. Because when the bell rang and I wrote her leaving the class, I knew she was about to bump into a mysterious and handsome stranger. The rest is history!

    2. I read that the original title was Spark, did you consider any other titles for this book, and what caused the change?
Ha! You’ve done your research! Basically Dreaming Ansatasia was called Spark for a very long time. But somewhere around the time we entered copy edits, my editor decided that the title didn’t sufficiently brand the book. He wanted readers to pick up the novel and immediately have some sense as to what it’s about. And Spark really didn’t cut it in that regard. Interestingly, Haunted has always been the title of Book 2! So in publishing, anything can happen.

    3. What has been the most shocking thing to happen to you since becoming a debut author?
Well, the most shocking thing was having my dream of being a published novelist come true and then getting diagnosed with thyroid cancer this past February. That definitely knocked me around for a bit.

    4. I love the covers of Dreaming Anastasia, and book 2, Haunted, what did you think when you first saw the covers, and the book in print?
I fell in huge love with both covers as soon as I saw them. Although I loved the HAUNTED cover more immediately because it was so absolutely what I’d seen in my head that it was uncanny. The DA cover actually evolved some; Ethan was not originally on the cover! But we’re all glad that the art department decided he needed to be added.

    5. Can you tell us a little more about where this series will go, how many books, and what you are currently working on?
Well, I hope to be able to do a third book in the relatively near future. Here’s the blurb for book 2, HAUNTED: Anne Michaelson’s world turned upside down last year when handsome, blue-eyed and temporarily immortal Russian Ethan Kozninsky showed up. Now six months later, Anne still has powers she doesn’t fully understand. She’s still dreaming about Baba Yaga’s forest. And she’s definitely still got feelings for Ethan, even though she’s got a new boyfriend—the very normal and very sweet lifeguard Ben Logan. But things are about to get even more complicated. There’s a wicked Russian folklore mermaid stalking Anne. With her heart torn between Ben and Ethan, Anne’s search for the rusalka’s identity reveals deep and startling secrets — including the true source of Anne’s powers. As the romance heats up, so does the danger. Will Anne’s powers be enough to help the rusalka get what she wants? Or will the longings of her own heart get in the way?

Dreaming Anastasia by Joy Preble Publisher: Sourcebooks Reading Level: Young Adult Paperback: 310 pages Series: Dreaming Anastasia, book #1 What really happened to Anastasia Romanov?
But, Anastasia is having her own dreams…

    PODs by Michelle Pickett
Published: Spencer Hill Press (June 4th, 2013)
    Reading Level: Young Adult
    Paperback: 312 pages
    Rating: 5 of 5 stars
    Summary:
Seventeen-year-old Eva is a chosen one. Chosen to live, while others meet a swift and painful death from an incurable virus so lethal, a person is dead within days of symptoms emerging. In the POD system, a series of underground habitats built by the government, she waits with the other chosen for the deadly virus to claim those above. Separated from family and friends, it's in the PODs she meets David. And while true love might not conquer all, it's a balm for the broken soul.

After a year, scientists believe the population has died, and without living hosts, so has the virus. That's the theory, anyway. But when the PODs are opened, survivors find the surface holds a vicious secret. The virus mutated, infecting those left top-side and creating… monsters.

Eva and David hide from the infected in the abandoned PODs. Together they try to build a life--a new beginning. But the infected follow and are relentless in their attacks. Leaving Eva and David to fight for survival, and pray for a cure.

    Review:

    Wow, wow… wow!
5 glowing, sparkling stars for this one!

I can't even fully explain how I feel about this book. I had been waiting for it for so long and then today it shows up at my door. I completely spent my ENTIRE Saturday devouring every… single… word!

I'm not sure if I've ever read a book that made me feel so many different emotions at once. Sadness, anxiety, excitement, helplessness, and so many more. From one page to the next I had no idea what would happen. The crazy part was imagining myself in a situation like Eva was in. What would happen if a virus was killing everyone? I seriously doubt I would be as strong as she was.

Eva was able to bring people together and fight for what she wanted. She was smart, caring, and determined. She took a horrible situation and tried to find a glimmer of hope. I honestly couldn't imagine any character being more perfect for this story. To her, the hope Eva was able to hold on to ended up being David. OMG, David. I loved how their relationship bloomed. It wasn't"instant love" which is so common in books these days. They lived with several others in their little world and their friendship gradually progressed into something more.

And, speaking of their world, I absolutely adored every character Michelle introduces us to. This book isn't just about a romance, or two people fighting some battle. This book allows us to get to know several, amazing, diverse characters who all grab your heart (even a few who have attitude issues). They all held such an important place in the story.
I had tears in my eyes so many times in this story because I really felt the connection these characters shared. They were truly like a family.

Now for the plot. Holy crap! First, I think somewhere in all of us we worry about something like this happening. A virus takes over and then what happens? Well, in this world, people are selected to move into PODs. These PODs are to be used for a period of time till the virus is no longer a threat. Sounds simple enough, but so much goes into pulling that off. We get to see into that world and what it would take to remove people from a harsh environment and place them somewhere a virus can't reach. Michelle did a flippin' fantastic job giving us each piece of this puzzle. We know each step Eva has to take and get a clear picture of what POD life would be like.

I won't go into details about what happens after they are removed from the POD but O-M-G! The action never stops.

This book seriously needs to be a movie. I could picture every detail and already see it playing out on screen. PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

I am now stalking Michelle to get updates on everything she writes. I recommend this book to EVERYONE! Beware of loss of sleep while reading it, and nightmares after it is over.

  • Beastly: Movie Review

    Beastly: Movie Review

This weekend I had to drag my BFF Button to see Beastly. She hadn't read the book yet so I had to bribe her by paying for her ticket — but I just couldn't wait to see it! Plus, I watched Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" earlier that day and was on a one way track.

I loved the book by Alex Flinn — check out my review of "Beastly. " And in case you haven't seen the trailer, here you go:

If you haven't read the book yet (or don't plan to), you can still see the movie. The movie did leave something rather big out at the end that they alluded to with the cinematography throughout — but you wouldn't know it was missing.

I thought that Alex Pettyfer (Kyle) did a fantastic job and he was great to look at (scarred or not). I know that Alex Flinn (the author of Beastly) has talked to the press recently about the change in the "Beast" from her novel to the screen — most notably the loss of hair and claws. To be honest, when I was reading "Beastly" I didn't really like the hair and claws bit; it felt like it was straight from the Disney movie. I really like how Kyle looked in the film because it seemed more modern and even plausible. There were a few parts where Kyle was "stalking" Lindy (same as in the book) — but he's so good to look at I didn't mind.

I really believed Pettyfer's portrayal of Kyle — it was fantastic acting on his part (albeit a bit of bad writing). I felt his pain and his heart break and, despite my feelings toward Vanessa Hudgens, I couldn't help but sit at the edge of my seat saying "KISS HER!" several times.

Vanessa Hudgens. Vanessa Hudgens made this movie awkward — almost like Kirsten Stewart awkward. Yes, at times Pettyfer was also awkward (see the trailer) but that's just bad writing. I don't know — I just didn't buy into Hudgen's portrayal of Lindy at all.

Random: I'm really glad they left out the chat room bit.

What really made this movie for me was Neil Patrick Harris as the tutor. He did a fantastic job (as always!). I found myself looking for him on screen to be the source of witty banter and conversation. He lightened the mood without taking away from the seriousness of the story. Seriously, if for no other reason — see this movie for NPH!

This movie was well paced and the ending was perfect! I don't quite remember exactly how the book ended — but the movie ending was flawless. Again, I was on the edge of my seat the last five minutes. I liked how they didn't shy away from the fact that the story is a bit cliche: "We've all heard that story." But they did it in such a way that it was new and exciting. I never doubted the ending, but I still willed it to happen.

If you didn't like the book because of the cliches — see the movie. The movie somehow eliminates the awful "nail on a chalkboard" feelings I had when I read the book. If you haven't read the book yet, go ahead and read the book or see the movie first — it's a great story with an amazing actor (Harris) and some great eye candy (Pettyfer — okay, he's a good actor too).

  • Tour: Character Question with Kyler from FRIGID by J.Lynn

Tour: Character Question with Kyler from FRIGID by J.Lynn

I just read Frigid a few weeks ago and I absolutely loved it!! Kyler was so swoon-worthy and Syd was his perfect match!
Today I have Kyler here for a question as part of the blog tour.

    12. Ever have those superhero fantasies? What superhero do you wish you could be, even for only one day? Why that hero and those powers?
I think I would be Thor. Not only is he a god who wields a hammer and can kick everyone’s ass with his bare hands, he also gets to hook up with Natalie Portman in the movie. I think I’d be okay with that.

You can check out a video of ALL of Kyler's questions he was asked by visiting StuckInBooks tomorrow, 7/26

Frigid by Janenifer. L. Armentrout Published: July 15th, 2013 (Spencer Hill Press) Reading Level: New Adult For twenty-one-year-old Sydney, being in love with Kyler isn't anything new. They'd been best friends ever since he pushed her down on the playground and she made him eat a mud pie. Somewhere over the years, she fell for him and fell hard. The big problem with that? Kyler puts the 'man' in man-whore. He's never stayed with a girl longer than a few nights, and with it being their last year in college, Syd doesn't want to risk their friendship by declaring her love.

Kyler has always put Syd on a pedestal that was too high for him to reach. To him, she's perfect and she's everything. But the feelings he has for her, he's always hidden away or focused on any other female. After all, Kyler will always be the poor boy from the wrong side of tracks, and Syd will always be the one girl he can never have.

But when they're stranded together at a posh ski resort due to a massive Nor'easter, there's nothing stopping their red-hot feelings for each other from coming to the surface. Can their friendship survive the attraction? Better yet, can they survive at all? Because as the snow falls, someone is stalking them, and this ski trip may be a life-changer in more ways than one.

    1. Your first novel 13 to Life, started from a textnovel contest. Has this experience been more fast-paced because of that? Is being an author what you expected it would be? It was definitely I whirlwind to begin! Being an author’s actually a lot more than I ever expected it would be—and a lot better. It’s also a lot more work. 2. Since becoming a debut author, have you received any advice from others authors that you have used the most? Every time I’m at a conference or convention we’re exchanging advice. Mostly, as authors, it seems we talk more often about the market and agents and writing and marketing strategies.

    3. 13 to Life is one of my favorite books of this year! Can you tell us what else we can expect from this series? Thank you so much for saying that—it totally makes my day! There’s a lot happening throughout the series. Although Jess and Pietr are generally our leads through the 13 to Life novels, readers will get to see more of other key characters, too, like Amy, Alexi, Max, and Cat. You’ll learn that the trouble flooding into Junction doesn’t just surround the werewolves but is tied to some very dangerous characters who are much more than they first appear. By the series’ end everything will be wrapped up neatly and readers will have answers to all the questions being raised throughout the books. And by the end not everyone we started with will still be *cough* with us and some that will remain will be changed forever. In pretty dramatic ways. 4. Do you have any other ideas that you are working on? Are there any other paranormal creatures you would love to incorporate into a novel? I’ll answer both those questions with one phrase: yes, quite a few.; -)

    5. Book 2, Secrets and Shadows, is set to release in February. Can you tell us a little about this new chapter in the lives of Jess and Pietr? Things heat up a bit in Secrets and Shadows: more fighting, more kissing, more werewolf action. Pietr’s struggling with a couple realizations—change is never easy--acting with the very best of intentions. Jess spends some time being rightfully ticked (and seriously confused) and, trying to adjust to her new normal she struggles to find the right path for herself, too. Oh! And there’s a Halloween Party.

13 to Life by Shannon Delany Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin (June 22nd, 2010) Paperback: 308 pages Reading Level: Young Adult Series: 13 to Life (book #1) Something strange is stalking the small town of Junction…

When junior Jess Gillmansen gets called out of class by Guidance, she can only presume it’s for one of two reasons. Either they’ve finally figured out who wrote the scathing anti-jock editorial in the school newspaper or they’re hosting yet another intervention for her about her mom. Although far from expecting it, she’s relieved to discover Guidance just wants her to show a new student around—but he comes with issues of his own including a police escort.

The newest member of Junction High, Pietr Rusakova has secrets to hide--secrets that will bring big trouble to the small town of Junction—secrets including dramatic changes he’s undergoing that will surely end his life early.
