Yesterday I went to my first ever book signing. It was in Knoxville at Union Ave Books and was part of the Ash to Nash tour. It was truly a blast! Beth Revis, Myra McEntire, Victoria Schwab, and Alan Gratz were hilarious!

They told stories about their publishing journeys, shared writing tips, and mentioned what is coming up next for them.

Beth Revis even showed off book 2 ARC in the Across the Universe series, A Million Suns. Hot off the presses! (pictured below)

After the questions the authors signed books. I was amazed that they knew of my blog!

It's easy to see that they are all having a blast on this tour and I was so excited that they could come to my area. I wish more authors would stop by!

Do you like to establish relationships with authors? Do you ever have"fan-girl/boy" moments?

ISALYS: Are you kidding?! There are few things in this world (at least as far as I'm concerned) that are cooler than being able to say"Oh, I got to meet Cassandra Clare and Carrie Ryan" or"Kate Pearce and Stacia Kane tweeted me". And I so totally have fan-girl moments. I try to keep it cool most of the time but there are a few authors like Gail Carriger, Gena Showalter, Sarah MacLean and Jeaniene Frost that if I'm lucky enough to meet, expect very loud & prolonged squeals from me!

VANESSA: OMG YESSSSS! I can never believe it when I meet an author and they actually talk to me.They're my rock stars! I think it's awesome when an author emails us or tweets us b/c it's like"They know we exist. OMG, THEY. KNOW. WE. EXIST!" lol — Isalys & Vanessa at Book Soulmates
Establishing relationships with authors is like the icing on the cake. Talk about amazing conversations! I’ve become friends with a few and I am thankful for their friendship. It’s another part of blogging that I’d say just happens. Fan girl? YES! Lol It does happen. I jump up and down, giggle like crazy and it all happens in the privacy and comfort in my own home. You should all be thankful that it happens behind closed doors too. How can someone who loves to read not have fan girl/boy moments with authors? The best relationships with authors are the ones that just 'sorta happen.' You have a bookish discussion somewhere (Twitter, on the blog) and it happens naturally. YES! I love chatting with authors about their books. It's easier to have a relationship with authors now because of social networking. There are several whom I've never met, but consider friends. I usually only establish relationships with authors after I've read their book and loved it. I don't like to get too close to authors beforehand because I don't want to be swayed in my reviews, and I can't stand writing a negative review about an author's book if I know them personally. I LOVE to establish relationships with authors. To me, an avid reader, authors are superstars. If an author acknowledges my existence, whether it's through my blog, Facebook, or Twitter, I'm in heaven! So, yes. I've definitely had several fan-girl moments.

Oh sure! I think we all have fan-girl moments (unless you’re a guy in which case fan-boy moments) I've been friends with authors or rather am friends with authors and I do enjoy it but something I've learned is that I don't like stepping on eggshells. So when I talk to authors about reviewing a book I don't get really friendly or fan-girly until after I’ve read the book because then I don't feel so crappy if I didn't like the book so much. I think its awesome talking to authors though. Especially when it's someone you really admire. I do love to establish relationships with authors. The majority of the authors I have spoken to are amazing and generous. The best moments I have had as blogger have been when an author has emailed me thanking me for a review.

I don't think I have an established relationship with any one author. But, I've chatted with quite a few. I love that and have definitely had fan girl moments. It's been great to learn that authors are just like me.

Yes, I love connecting with authors. I tend to connect with more writers than authors through my blog, but I do write articles, which usually involve interviews with authors. Most of my"fan-girl" moments are cringe-worthy. For example, I interviewed Katherine Center on the phone once for an article I was writing. When I listened to the recording later on, I noticed that our entire conversation consisted of Katherine saying brilliant things and me giggling in response.: )

Yes, I love talking with authors… especially on Twitter. I had a total fan-girl moment when I got to go to the True Blood panel at ComicCon. I also had the opportunity to get a book signed by Charlaine Harris herself. I loved it. I won the trip there and I had no idea what to expect. It was amazing. Yes! Talking and interacting with authors is the best! They are so funny and just super nice, easy to talk to. I've had my fair share of"fan girl" moments. I went to a Rachel Caine signing, and after asking a million questions she started signing books and she said to me"I like your shirt!" (PB and J shirt) I just giggled and told my friend,"She likes my shirt!!!". Also, when Cassandra Clare @ me back in twitter, and Andrea Creamer RT'd my review of Nightshade and @ twitted me. I like to establish relationships with authors who have written books I am very passionate about. I like being able to set up interviews and guest posts with authors so that my readers can have a variety or blog posts to read, not just reviews. I think this can broaden my readership.

I don't really reach out to be friends with authors. I tend to prefer to keep it that way because becoming friends with an author can go both ways. I notice many who are friends with authors, but I always think to myself what do you do when you don't like their book and have to review it? It's fine for people who don't write negative reviews and for those who can gush abut a book when they hated it, but I am not one of them. So, it's just easier for me to keep my distance and avoid all that messy drama. It depends though, although it hasn't happened to date — in the near future I might be willing to put aside the potential consequences due to really connecting with an author. Regarding fan- girly/boy moments I have had them on the rare occasion. For instance; when Jay Asher joined twitter and I interviewed him that was a moment for me because I have spent years trying to figure Hannah out, trying to come to terms with her story, and then here I was for the first time meeting the man who had told me her story. Who made me fall completely in love with it. The Second time was when the author of two of my most well loved books being The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns emailed me back. When you love something as much as I love those books, as much as I look up to the author you can't help but beam and have that moment to yourself where you want to run around the room and dare I say FIST PUMP like crazy! — Aly at Fantasy4eva

Sometimes, The Sword Is Mightier Than The Pen — Chris Bradford

We all know how important reading is to a child’s development, but with all the immediate distractions in the modern world it can be difficult to engage young people in the activity of reading.

My answer is to ‘keep it real’ and show kids how books can live and breathe from the page! With the Young Samurai series, not only will they read a great action-adventure story, but they can experience Jack and Akiko’s world first hand by participating in martial arts, discussing & role-playing etiquette and language, designing their own kimono, eating sushi and even organising a Japanese festival! [See Teacher’s Guide below]

You see Young Samurai is more than a ‘clash of swords’ action-adventure story. For me, it’s a way of life.

Never is this more apparent than when I’m standing in front of a group of children wielding my samurai sword.

Certainly, the sword guarantees a young audience’s attention. Being a writer, teacher and black belt martial artist dispels many preconceptions an audience might have regarding the archetypal author. The combination of a reading and samurai sword display inspires them so even the most reluctant readers are picking up books as if their lives depended upon it!

I started martial arts aged 7 ¾ and over the years the sport has had a very positive influence. Not only has it taught me self-defense, it has built my self-confidence and developed life skills. Like my hero Jack Fletcher, my young readers can learn the ‘Way of the Warrior’ and come to understand bushido, the samurai code of conduct that promotes such values as respect, loyalty and courage.

By including a sword display in my author events, I reveal the reality behind the fiction, and not only engage regular readers and sports enthusiasts, but also film buffs and computer aficionados familiar with Bruce Lee, Manga comics and samurai video games.

My hope is that readers caught up in the spirit of Young Samurai will not only read the book, but try a martial art for themselves, so they too can live the story and learn bushido. But I don’t rely on my sword to keep their attention. It merely helps them focus! Once they’re reading, they’re hooked…

And the pen is again mightier than the sword!

ISALYS: How much I admire them!! As a matter of fact, I had this conversation with my hubby the other day. I know a lot of hard work goes into being a actor or athlete or musician, but none of that compares to the hard work, dedication and talent that it takes to put together a great book that is enjoyed by so many all around the world. And above all that, authors are still so real! They tour the country taking the time to meet their fans, sign books, take pictures. They tweet us and tell us about their goals, their frustrations or what traffic was like that day. I love that they are not unreachable!

Well recently I've noticed allot of conflict, I guess you could call it, going on about Negative reviews written by bloggers. But to be honest if I was going to tell an author anything I would tell them truly what I thought out their book, as nicely as possible. Well that's kind of a hard question when I think about it. Especially with all the heated discussions that have been going on this year between authors and bloggers. I'm not sure really. Lame answer I know, but I'm one of those people who can't write speeches. I wait till the last moment when I'm standing in front of the crowd before I realize what it is I have to say. I share my thoughts and feelings with some authors all the time, the ones that I talk to every day (even about silly things), but when I read that question it seems like you mean authors on a bigger scale. I like when authors are accessible through social media. I'm not saying you have to be on Twitter or post on your blog everyday, but it's nice for authors to have some kind of forum where people can ask questions or learn about their upcoming projects, etc.

Thisis a tough one for me because I don't really give it much thought. If I think about it though I would like to say this. Sometimes a blogger will not like your book and that might hurt you; especially if you are on friendly terms with them. So maybe you start to keep your distance. It's not really the best thing to do. I can't stress enough that a blogger not loving your book doesn't mean they have crossed off all of your work altogether, or that they don’t like you. I have had times where I have given a mixed review and it's obvious the author has read it because even though we didn’t talk much, — we would tweet each other from time to time. When they stop replying back you get the message. It doesn't really bother me because like I said I don't really go out of my way to be friends with authors and I don’t have a relationship with any where I can call it a friendship. But it does leave me disappointed because I had planned on getting the sequel or your latest book. After all that I'm not so eager anymore. — Aly at Fantasy4eva

Overall, you all said you really enjoy my blog. THANK YOU! That means so much to me!

REVIEWS — All responses were either great/average.which is wonderful to me. I sometimes struggle with reviews and, oddly enough, the more I liked a book, the harder the review is to write. I feel like I'm not doing it justice. I had some people say they wished I'd add a section to my reviews that said if I recommend the book or not, or who it would be recommended for. That is a great idea! I will start doing this. I'll try to either add (Recommended for ALL/PARANORMAL/CONTEMPORARY fans), something like that and I'll add an age range when needed.

INTERVIEWS — Most of you enjoy my author interviews. Some said they didn't read those, which I completely understand. Typically, I add interviews when I'm giving away a book by that author. I feel it's a way to explain the book better to the readers and introduce them to the person who wrote it. I always alter the questions to fit the author/book. Sometimes they are the same questions you will see on another interview, but I try really hard to not just use the same questions over and over. I'm still trying to expand on this and come up with new post ideas for authors.

GIVEAWAYS — Responses ranged on this question. A majority said the giveaways were great, some said average, and a few said bad. Which is fine. I wanted honest opinions. According to blogger (and this number isn't completely accurate), I've hosted around 193 giveaways. Most of the time these giveaways are made possible by the author or publisher. I try whenever possible to include International readers by giving away ebook copies. Giveaways are one of my favorite parts of blogging because it's nice to give people the chance to read a book they may not have been able to pick up. I would love to host giveaways more but it is expensive to package and ship the books. People may not realize it, but many times bloggers do pay for those things (any time it doesn't come directly from the publisher/author). I'd love to have more giveaways, open to everyone, but it just isn't possible. Even an event like Haunted Halloween costs us (Lisa and I together) about $400 for shipping and supplies alone during that 1 month.

EXPLORING NEW YA — This was a new feature this year and I wanted to know if people liked it. The reason being because it takes an incredible amount of time to set up: ) I post it twice a month. Some people said they haven't seen it, and others said they read it, but normally don't add any of the books to their lists. Just a note, if you haven't seen the feature at all, you can click on FEATURES then EXPLORING NEW YA at the top of the blog. Lots of people said they love it and do use it for book recommendations too. I do enjoy having a place where new releases can be featured. I'm just glad most people do see it and may find some books they'll enjoy.

MOVIE REVIEWS — This part was kinda even around the board. Some liked it, some didn't, some didn't care.: ) This is a new feature that I do think I'll have on, but only occasionally. Maybe 1-2 posts a month related to movies. I liked this idea because we all watch movies. Sometimes these movies will be related to books (like Water for Elephants). When I got the opportunity to review movies for Fox Entertainment I didn't want to pass that up. Especially since they do offer giveaways for many of these movies. This is something I'd really like to offer to readers. Plus, I really need more features on here. I know people get tired of reviews and interviews so this will give me something to break that up. Hopefully people like it!

LEAST FAVORITE POSTS — This one had a wide range of answers but a majority picked either YA NEWS, INTERVIEWS/GUEST POSTS or IN MY MAILBOX. YA News is something I post occasionally just to highlight some things going on in the YA book world. Sometimes it's cheap books/ebooks, author news, book covers, or other bookish news. It's sort of a"misc." place to put things. I would like to make it a more enjoyable thing to read, but it all really depends on what's going on right at that time. I'll try to include more interesting things as we go along. Interviews/Guest Posts are kinda part of the norm for bloggers. I mentioned interviews above and I do want to make these posts more interesting as well. Sometimes these posts are part of a tour so they are out of my hands but I do want people to enjoy what they read. In My Mailbox will be mentioned below.

FREE/CHEAP EBOOKS — Most of you said you do want to know about free or cheap ebooks. This is something I've had in YA News most of the time. I'm going to keep a look out for these books and hopefully post about them more frequently. For now, they will be with other YA news though. I don't find out about them enough to have a separate thing so be on the lookout for those.

INDIE/SELF-PUBLISHED BOOKS — A majority said yes, they do read these books. I try super hard to feature these books for a few reasons. 1- the books can totally rock! Some of my all-time favorite books are self-published or from a super small publisher. 2- the authors rock! 3- the books are normally much cheaper. This is especially true if it's in ebook form. So, an awesome book for only.99 or $2.99? Yes! And 4- because these awesome books from these fabulous authors are often overlooked. I'm not someone who will ever turn down someone just because their book is self-published or from a publisher I'm unaware of. That isn't fair. Every book deserves a chance and if it's something I think I'll enjoy, I'll read it. That's the fun part of reading. You never know where your next favorite book will come from. At the same time, it really makes me happy to know that the readers enjoy these books as well. I honestly wasn't sure if people did so I'm sure this makes a lot of the authors very pleased.

WHAT IS NEEDED? — This had a wide range of answers. CONTEMPORARY/HISTORICAL/FANTASY/MYSTERY. And this is why I loved the survey. I hadn't realized how neglected certain genre's were on here! Especially contemporary. I love contemporary books! I admit, when I first started blogging paranormal was my go-to type. Over time, I've tried to expand that a bit. This can be difficult because I'd say around 60-70% of the review books I receive are paranormal. But I will be changing this! I'm even thinking of having a contemporary week in a few months. I'm reading more and more contemp. books so you guys are in luck! I'm not a huge fan of historical and I really don't get many of those for review. Same goes for fantasy or mystery. But, I will still try to feature those books in some way. I do want to have a nice balance on here.

WHAT IS NOT NEEDED? I didn't have a ton of answers here but PARANORMAL was a common answer.: ) Sorry guys! I do have lots and lots of paranormal. Expanding my own book preferences is a goal of mine for this year. I've been surprised in the past by the books I've liked so I think it will be nice to get out of my comfort zone.

WHAT NEEDS IMPROVED? Some people commented here about the blog appearance. I do realize there is a font problem. I'm not sure why it's like that and my blog designer isn't sure either. It is small and usually I have to go back and resize each post (but then that throws the formatting off). This is something I plan to work on. Along with that, I hope to de-clutter a bit and change things around in the next few months. But it's good to hear from readers because I'm not sure how things show up or load for you guys. Others said NOTHING, so thank you!!: ) I'm so happy to see that many of you enjoy my blog and like coming here. I did see a comment about using more social media and YES, I need to do this badly. I'm naturally introverted. I do have twitter but rarely get on there. I lurk a lot: ) I do want to become more social on twitter and even have more conversations take place on the blog. Actually I'm working on this part right now (stay tuned for details on that!).

FAVORITE PART OF THE BLOG — You guys had such nice answers here! Many said reviews, that I think of international followers, that I seem to care about my readers (I do, lots!), that I'm nice (*blush*). Thank you! Sometimes it's hard to know how things come off when we are just typing them out. I never want anyone to feel ignored or like I don't care about what the majority would want. Yes, I blog for myself but I enjoy it because of you guys. Honestly, I would never do this if no one read what I wrote. The enjoyment comes from knowing that maybe at least 1 person will get joy out of a book I recommend, or out of reading about a new author. That is what makes everything worthwhile.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU COME HERE? Most said a few times a week, which is great! I know I've been slacking since October. Haunted Halloween sort of gives me a blogging hangover: ) I want to pick things back up again and I do have lots planned!

LAYOUT — Most people said they loved it or it was average. Personality, I do love the overall look of the blog but I do plan to change things up a bit because I know it can get boring. But the design will stay the same for a while, little things may change.

IN MY MAILBOX — I know IMM is something people either love or hate. Some people picked it as a favorite post and some suggested I stop doing it. I don't do IMM each week. I'm lucky to do it once a month.: ) So if you see a ton of books on here, that's why. I DO like to do IMM occasionally because it's a way to mention books that may otherwise not be noticed. I can't read everything I get, and I'd feel bad for getting a book that never gets viewed on my blog. IMM gives me a way to show the books where hopefully some people will see them and add them to their lists. I personally love seeing people's mailbox posts because I get a lot of good book ideas myself. Plus, it's nice to see an actual copy of the book (I'm all about book covers!). So I guess I'll be somewhere in the middle. IMM won't be something you'll see here each week, but I won't be cutting it out completely. But I did want to mention it so people know why I personally do it.

RATING REVIEWS — Everyone said yes or that it doesn't matter. I wasn't sure if people liked this fact or not so I was glad with the results. I pay much more attention to reviews that are rated but I didn't know if people agreed with that or hated if a book was rated. This will be staying the same. I will continue to rate books and will be adding the recommendations I added above.

A few weeks months ago I asked for your opinion: what books would you recommend to my students. I had a fantastic response. If my stats for that post are any indication, this question has been asked many times before and people, especially teachers, are still looking for those great recommendations. In one word, bloggers ROCK! My experience has been almost 100% positive. As a debut author without the backing of a major publisher, I’m responsible for all of my marketing. One of the first things I did was look for bloggers who might want to review my book. I contacted 10 at first and received 9 yes’s. It's no surprise that I absolutely adore Kimberly Derting. The Body Finder was one of the first books I read as a blogger and I was instantly in love with the story. From that moment I have been a stalker… ahem… fan of Kimberly's.

Believe it or not, it's not just Kim's writing that makes her incredible. She is one of the sweetest people I have ever had the pleasure to talk to. She is nothing but kind and considerate, and when I was just a newbie blogger who had no idea what I was doing, she was one of the first authors to be on my blog.

For all those reasons, I was completely thrilled to be her blogger for the Dark Days tour. I've always wanted to be part of the Dark Days tour, but to have Kim as my author, makes it so much more special!

I had the pleasure of interviewing Kim again and, trust me, you guys wanna check out her answers!

1. What are a few of the most important lessons you've learned while writing The Body Finder series so far?

Aside from never, EVER talk to strangers, and learning the difference between “lay” and “lie” (I’m still shaky on this one!), I think I’ve learned to be a more patient person. When I was a newbie author, I was always in a hurry-up-and-wait mode, and now, not so much. I’ve come to appreciate the downtime, even though there isn’t usually much of it.

2. What is the most difficult part of the writing process for you?
For me, it’s trying to set a writing schedule and actually sticking to it. I find myself constantly distracted by Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest (OMG Pinterest!), blogs, and email. Also, my family’s constant need for food and attention can be a little distracting as well!: )

3. Can you tell us one way Violet has changed throughout the series?
Violet has always been really (really!) private, probably stemming from a lifetime of keeping her gift a secret. She’s learning to open up—and even starting to lean on others a little. I think it’ll probably take a while to get the hang of it, though!

4. Can you share with us a few of your favorite lines from The Last Echo?

“Mocking me will get you nowhere.” But he [Jay] leaned down, his breath tickling the side of her neck, and a rush of warmth flooded Violet’s stomach. “There are other ways to break me, though.”

Claire pursed her lips. “Don’t do it, Chels. They’ll spit in your food if you send it back. You don’t want them spitting in your food, do you?”

Violet wanted to nod, but she was too afraid to. Their lips were far too close. Dangerously close.

“I gotta say, if you’re gonna get hurt, this is the place to be. The drugs here aren’t half-bad.”

Sara dangled the familiar surfboard keychain Jay had gotten her when he and his mom had gone to Hawaii. It said Maui on one side and Victoria on the other, the closest he could find to Violet.

There was a thin veneer of frost that coated every surface of her skin and dusted her perfectly tweezed brows and the thick fringe of her lashes, making them look brittle but beautiful.

When I met Kim Harrison, I was so excited I told her I was a “Harper Arthur” too! Turns out I’m an “author” not an “Arthur.”
Biggest Fear
Anything involving spiders, sharks, vampires, being buried alive, snakes, exercise (I’m sure there’s phobia for that!), Big Foot, or having toilet paper hanging from the back of my pants when I leave the women’s room. I may be a little neurotic.
Biggest Accomplishment
Not ever having toilet paper hanging from my pants when I leave the women’s restroom.

Top Ten Books that Inspire Me
1) The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
This book made me fall in love with the idea of storytelling. The first time I read it, I discovered that many of the bedtime stories my father told me were actually inspired by the world that J.R.R. Tolkien created. I thought it was so cool, and I decided I wanted to write stories that could inspire people the same way. It was also where my love of fantasy started, a love that inspired me to write and publish my first book, Beckoning Light.

2) Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
I'm a huge Jane Austen fan, and I've read Pride and Prejudice countless times. It inspired my love of romance and flawed characters. If I could travel back in time, I'd love to meet Jane Austen.

3) Portal by Imogen Rose
This YA Time Travel Romance inspired me to self- publish. I loved the story and knew it was something that probably wouldn’t have been traditionally published originally because it was so unique, and it didn’t fit within the traditional categories. I was so impressed, that it gave me that final push to take the indie plunge.

4) Flat-out love by Jessica Park
This is my favorite NA book. It inspired me to try writing in the NA category, and it reminded me of how great books with a twist are. I'd been reading almost exclusively paranormal and fantasy, and Flat-Out Love rekindled my love of contemporary.

5) Moby Dick by Herman Melville
This is my favorite book. Melville captures obsession like no one else. You feel the emotion even though it's a book that takes place almost entirely on a whaling ship. Moby Dick inspires me to challenge myself to play with genres and to experiment with my writing.

6) Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie
I love Agatha Christie, and this is my favorite mystery of hers. She instilled in me a love of mystery and intrigue. I especially love how timeless it is, it’s still so great after all these years.

7) Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling
I read the first five books on my honeymoon. Reading the series was the first time I discovered Internet fandom. I used to read Muggle net with my friends when we were supposed to be listening to law school lectures. It’s such a fantastic world that never leaves you.

8) Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.
Twilight reintroduced me to YA, and paranormal. I Loved Bella and the voice. It made me feel confident about writing first person even if it isn't what you were"supposed to do."

9) Fablehaven by Brandon Mull
Mull is the king of writing a series where all of the books tie together perfectly. Hints he drops in book one, tie together in the final book. I strive to do the same in my series, and I aim to make every detail count. Chances are if it’s in my book, it's there for a reason even if it takes a few books to see it. The same goes with my characters.
10) Let Me Call You Sweetheart by Mary Higgins Clark
I picked up one of her books at the library in sixth grade, and read every book of hers within a few months. This was the one that stuck with me longest. Mary Higgins Clark was one of my early transitions into adult fiction, and I still have so many fond memories of curling up with one her books.

Romantic books have been such a big part of my life and my career, it’s hard to narrow this down to a manageable list. I have about fifty romances on my forever keepers shelves. But if I have to pick some favorites, here goes:

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I first read this in my freshman Lit Hum class at Columbia and it turned my world upside-down. Here was a book I loved—swoon, Darcy, swoon—and it was considered important enough to be studied in an Ivy League literature class. This is the moment that I realized a book can be both popular and important. And a romance novel, to boot.

The Magic of You by Johanna Lindsey. When I first decided to try this whole writing thing, I literally devoured the romance section at my local bookstore. Johanna Lindsey was my first auto-buy author. She is the master of The Moment, that line that just takes your breath away. In this book, it’s Warren (after Amy’s been chasing him the entire book) saying, “You can’t give up on me!”

The Duke and I by Julia Quinn. I cannot begin to describe in a few sentences how much I love this book. It is just one of the most powerful romances I’ve ever read. Julia Quinn is genius at creating characters who absolutely cannot possibly make it work, and then making it work. Simon and Daphne are a close second to Darcy and Elizabeth for my favorite romantic couple of all time. I dare anyone to read this book and not cry a dozen times. I always do.

Favorite Romantic Books by Sophie Jordan

What’s my favorite romantic book!?!?! Wow – that’s like asking a food junkie to pick her fav dish (which would be tough for me, too)! There are just so many choices – especially since romance has been my favorite genre for so long. Okay, here’s my list: The Magic of You by Johanna Lindsey. It’s a historical romance featuring one of the strongest, take-charge heroines ever! It’s really a stand-out historical romance. When I first read it years ago it felt so new and fresh. And when I reread it now, I can still say the same thing. It has that universal, timeless appeal.

Second choice would probably be … Gentle Rogue by Johanna Lindsey. Another historical romance. The books are connected, too. I just love the tension of a girl disguising herself as a boy. Oh, the fireworks when the truth is revealed! Hm, contemporary romance would have to go to Susan Elizabeth Phillips’s Nobody’s Baby But Mine. It features an outrageous premise … but is an amazingly emotional and very “real” story. My favorite romantic suspense novel is Linda Howard’s Open Season – it has the perfect balance of suspense and romance, but at its core it’s an ugly duckling story. I know these qualify as my favorites because they’re all books I’ve read multiple times. That’s always my gauge.

As for young adult novels … hm, there are so many where the romance is really strong and at the core. They might as well be called a young adult romance. I’ll choose The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting and Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins. Both books have some hot boys and empathetic, likeable heroines. But it’s no easy road to a happily ever after for these characters. Just like in the adult romance books I listed above, you get tons of agonizing conflict. And in the meantime tons of tension and steamy chemistry that sizzles on every page. These are the titles that pop in my head right off the bat … but ask me a year from now and I’m sure I’ll have new titles to add.

Wow, has it really been that long?

Tuesday was super busy in the Expo. I got some great books but stuck to my plan of being selective. Tuesday night I went to the Bookrageous Bash at the Lolita Bar with Heather and Megan and ended up meeting with Kim, Ash, Cass, and Amy and had a great time! It was nice to relax and talk to other bloggers.

Wednesday I spent most of my morning in lines. I stood in line for Rick Riordan for two hours and Ally Condie's "Crossed" for about an hour. Rick's book was personalized for my best friend Button as a "thank you for being in my wedding" gift as it's her favorite author. I spent the rest of Wednesday walking around, talking to people, and taking in all of the sights of the Expo. After the Expo Sheila and I returned to the hotel and to relax before going to the Harper Collins reception and dinner with Heather (and others).

Thursday morning we hit the Expo early again because at 10:30 we left to go on a walking tour of Greenwich Village with Adriana Trigiani. I spent the morning finishing up talking to publishers and other people I had promised a meeting with. We left for Greenwich at about 10:40 and had a great time walking with our tour guide Nikki. Many of the stops on the tour were from Adriana's novel. I'll post pictures next week. We then went to the Standard Grill and met up with Adriana and had a fantastic dinner. This woman is amazingly funny and genuine. I haven't read a novel of hers (yet) but after listening to her stories I am SO excited to get my hands on those books. It was an absolutely fantastic day Adriana — thank you!

After lunch we returned to the Expo to find that our boxes of books down in the shipping area were open and basically pillaged. Of course there were tears when I realized that both "Crossed" and Button's book by Rick Riordan were gone. I have no one to blame but myself as I should have just carried them with me. The other down side is that because I was extremely selective all three days I only had a total of probably 20 books from BEA 2011 at the beginning — today I shipped home about 10. Now, the lesson here (besides guard your ARCS) is that books aren't everything. This mantra is literally what's getting me through the day. I didn't come to BEA for books and I believe that I "preached" that enough before BEA (so perhaps this is a test). I came to network, make connections, and reconnect with "internet friends." I'm most upset over the loss of the signed Kane novel for Button as everything else can be bought later. But again, books aren't everything and definitely not the reason I attended BEA. I had a great trip, met some fantastic authors and bloggers, and, honestly, it could be worse. Our hotel could have been robbed (laptops, Nooks, etc), we could have been mugged (or kidnapped), I could be unemployed and homeless, D could leave me at the altar... the list goes on. Am I upset — yes. Is it my own darn fault — yes. Will I get over it — yes. My added advice to all future BEA goers — take your precious items with you at all times.

After that excitement Sheila and I walked the several blocks to the Post Office (as I didn't want to pay the $37 handling fee for ten books) to mail my small box home. We then traveled to the Atria Reception and had a fantastic time! I met some more great bloggers, publicists, and authors. It was very relaxing and not crowded (thank goodness). After that Sheila and I viewed the Empire State Building (because, why not), returned to the hotel, and are gearing up for the BBC tomorrow.

Review:

Her relationship with her mother was another interesting area. They didn't have a typical mother-daughter relationship. But they do seem to have a great bond. The world we get to know in this book is very complex. There are several paranormal creatures — Valkyries, vampires, werewolves, other shifters and more!

Infinity's friends, Zoe and Diego, were fabulous! They had some fantastic interactions and I felt it allowed us to really see more of Infinity's personality. I was first interested in this story because of the paranormal elements. It's rare to see a New Adult story with a paranormal twist. I really enjoyed learning about the world, but at times I was a bit confused. Sometimes it was hard to keep up with the plot and I had to go back and slowly read through it again. It's important to do that with this story because there are times when a lot is told to us quickly.

Overall this was a solid story. There are parts that could have been taken out, or altered a bit to make it better. Some things were a bit repetitive but I will still read book 2!

1. Your first novel 13 to Life, started from a textnovel contest. Has this experience been more fast-paced because of that? Is being an author what you expected it would be? It was definitely I whirlwind to begin! Being an author’s actually a lot more than I ever expected it would be—and a lot better. It’s also a lot more work. 2. Since becoming a debut author, have you received any advice from others authors that you have used the most? Every time I’m at a conference or convention we’re exchanging advice. Mostly, as authors, it seems we talk more often about the market and agents and writing and marketing strategies.

3. 13 to Life is one of my favorite books of this year! Can you tell us what else we can expect from this series? Thank you so much for saying that—it totally makes my day! There’s a lot happening throughout the series. Although Jess and Pietr are generally our leads through the 13 to Life novels, readers will get to see more of other key characters, too, like Amy, Alexi, Max, and Cat. You’ll learn that the trouble flooding into Junction doesn’t just surround the werewolves but is tied to some very dangerous characters who are much more than they first appear. By the series’ end everything will be wrapped up neatly and readers will have answers to all the questions being raised throughout the books. And by the end not everyone we started with will still be *cough* with us and some that will remain will be changed forever. In pretty dramatic ways. 4. Do you have any other ideas that you are working on? Are there any other paranormal creatures you would love to incorporate into a novel? I’ll answer both those questions with one phrase: yes, quite a few.; -)

5. Book 2, Secrets and Shadows, is set to release in February. Can you tell us a little about this new chapter in the lives of Jess and Pietr? Things heat up a bit in Secrets and Shadows: more fighting, more kissing, more werewolf action. Pietr’s struggling with a couple realizations—change is never easy--acting with the very best of intentions. Jess spends some time being rightfully ticked (and seriously confused) and, trying to adjust to her new normal she struggles to find the right path for herself, too. Oh! And there’s a Halloween Party.

Stop #13 – “The Inner City”

The secret goal of almost every Fringer is to someday make it into the Inner City, past the wall that separates the civilized world from the human trash, into the glittering city that looms over us with its great starry towers that had somehow resisted crumbling into dust. Everyone knows someone who knows someone who was taken into the city, a brilliant mind or a great beauty, someone too unique or special to be left here with us animals.
