    48 Hour Read-A-Thon

I have decided to join the 48 Hour Read-a-Thon hosted by Unputdownables starting today! Since I'm recently All By Myself, I thought this would be a great way to distract myself from my first weekend alone.

Despite having school today, it is Recreational Reading Friday so I will still be participating despite working at the same time!:) I love my life. I started this morning by listening to "Definitely Dead" on audio while showering, straightening my hair, and doing all those other necessary evils. This weekend I hope to finish:

    • "Definitely Dead" (Sunday)
    • "The Iron King" (Friday)
    • "Uglies"
    • "Across the Universe"
It's pushing it, but I think I can do it.

Just curious but if the Read-A-Thon goes from the 4th through the 6th... shouldn't it be a 72 hour read-a-thon? I'm not a mathematician.
Are you joining up? If so... comment with a link so I can cheer you on! Happy Friday everybody!

    Update #1
Due to Recreational Reading day, I was able to read all day during school and finished (and LOVED) "The Iron King." After school I watched the state One Act Play competition, blog hopped, and then went to see "The Dawn Treader." So it that aspect, I did drop the ball a bit. But it is now 9:25pm and I am home at last. I'm about to shut the computer (really) and take Sam the Nook to bed. Instead of opening "Across the Universe" (like a good blogger), I'm going to read a guilty pleasure romance.
Tomorrow I am judging a speech meet at the HS and would like to watch my hometown (Timber Lake, SD) perform at the One Act as well. But I still hope to listen to at least an hour or two of "Definitely Dead" and finish "Across the Universe." I'll save "Uglies" for Sunday.

Update #2 Well it's Sunday evening and I just finished listening to "Definitely Dead." I didn't get as much reading done this weekend as I had planned. I'm not sure why, I feel like I'm just in a reading funk. But I'm home for the night (I left the Super Bowl party at half time) and have loads to grade before Conferences tomorrow and I still need to watch "The Odyssey" before I show it in class. So, sadly, this is where my read-a-thon ends. With conferences tomorrow I've got to make sure I come prepared. I guess three books this weekend was pushing it a bit; Saturday I judged a speech meet until 1pm and then my cousin came to visit before one-acts and she stayed until 5pm. But still... it could have been worse right?
    Happy Reading!

  • Prepare for the Read-A-Thon

    Prepare for the Read-A-Thon
    Once Upon A Read-A-Thon

In case you've missed the button on my right sidebar, there's a Read-A-Thon starting tomorrow! I'm really excited to participate since I missed out on Bloggiesta and the last major Read-A-Thon. I'll be driving home from Bismarck tomorrow so the first five hours will be spent with an audio book — "Shopaholic Ties the Knot." After that, we'll see what happens!

As for goals, I'd like to finish:

    1. "Shopaholic Ties the Knot"
    2. "Dead as a Doornail"
    3. "O, Juliet"
    4. "Shiver"
    5. "To Kill a Mockingbird"
    6. "Emma and the Vampires"

I really encourage everyone who is able to join in the fun! Summer is half way over and now is the perfect time to be "ubber" productive. I'm really looking forward to this because starting this week I'll be on (yet another) vacation for two weeks before moving in to my apartment and classroom, my best friend's wedding, and the beginning of school. Whoo! One day at a time right?

Let me know if you're participating in the fun and good luck to everyone!

  • Read-A-Thon Update 1

    Day One of the Read-A-Thon

Well, I had planned on listening to "Shopaholic Ties the Knot" the entire ride home from Bismarck (five hours), but an hour in the CD started skipping and no matter what I did it wouldn't work. So I didn't really get into the read-a-thon until I got home — then, I promise, all I did was listen (and upload pictures to Facebook, and clean, and. . well you get the idea). I've just now finished it but am too tired to write the review — look for it tomorrow.:)

Tomorrow, while I do have a hefty little to do list, I would like to conquer either Shiver, Dead as a Doornail, or To Kill a Mockingbird.
How is everyone else doing? Meeting those goals?

  • Read-A-Thon: April 2010

    Read-A-Thon: April 2010

At the very last minute, I've decided to partake in the Read-a-thon tomorrow! Student teaching has consumed a lot of my life recently and I want to take this opportunity to reconnect with the blogosphere!

I won't be able to devote an entire 24 hours to the challenge as I'm on duty this weekend and have a 2am round and a massive migraine. So my plan is to begin reading at 10am until noon. T has his first home baseball game that I'm really excited about. I plan on resuming reading at 4pm and continue on until 7pm. I then am on duty until 2am so my reading will depend on what my residents want to do. My goal is to read at least 10 hours tomorrow. I know this seems little compared to others who will be reading 24, but this is really all I can devote. I've been ill all week and I need my energy for next week as I have FOUR interviews — so I need to use this weekend to catch up on sleep.

I NEED to finish "All Quiet on the Western Front." I also plan on reading "The Princess and the Frog," "Food Rules," and "Hex Hall." From there... I'm winging it.

As for fuel, I've stocked up on carrots, spinach, pineapple (first time I'll be chopping up one myself!), bananas, and strawberries! What better combination to go with Pollan's "Food Rules"?

Check back early tomorrow as I'm hosting a kick off challenge! Good luck everybody and Happy Reading!

  • All By Myself...

    All By Myself...

This is exactly how I feel (prepare for my very own little melodrama).

Today, D left for Bismarck — roughly a 7 hour drive North for a new job. It's a job that will eventually lead to his dream job of working in the ER at the hospital he's always wanted to be at. So when he asked me what I thought of him applying for a job, I could hardly be anything but supportive. I wasn't surprised at all when they called less than 24 hours later for an interview and he had the job a week later.

That was three weeks ago. I've had three weeks to warm up to the idea of living alone for four months. Three weeks to brace myself. I thought I was ready; I was almost looking forward to it! I thought of all the time that I could read, do what I want, be alone, blog, twitter, read my Google Reader, etc...

But last night it finally hit me. No one to cook with. No one to watch TV with (I got rid of the cable). No one to complain about my students to. My best friend just moved 7 hours north after living with him for five months. I really am all by myself (cue music).

But really, I'll be okay. I mean after the initial shock of it I'm doing much better. The tears have dried and I've put on my big girl pants. I am keeping busy with this weeks 48 hour read-a-thon (can't wait) and a speech meet!

The thing is... I've never really lived alone. In college I was an RA so I lived in the dorms all four years and loved it. When I got my teaching job I moved into an apartment at the beginning of August and Dan visited basically every weekend until he moved in at the end of August. I don't have family near here and I don't hang out with my colleagues.

I'm still looking forward to "living alone" and I think it will be a valuable experience before getting married. I guess I'm one of those independent people who never really knew how much they loved being with another person until that person left... (irony).

What do you do when you're alone? Besides read, listen to audio, blog, and Twitter. I plan on learning a few new things — like how to cook! So I can surprise D when we "officially" move in together after the wedding. I also plan on working out twice as much (again, wedding goals). But what else do you do?

    Don't say grade papers.:)

And... just because I own the copyright: here are our engagement pictures!

  • Bloggiesta: March 2012

    Bloggiesta: March 2012

It's that time again! Bloggiesta! The first time I really participated was during the first Bloggiesta party and I've attempted to every other time as well, but due to outside factors and plans I was never really able to get anything accomplished. This time around though I've cleared my schedule and I plan on doing nothing else but working on my blog and reading!

Speaking of the blog (did you like that transition): tomorrow Blogelina is officially transferring me from Blogger to Wordpress! I'm super excited (and nervous) about the transition but I'm glad and confident that I have someone to do the hard work for me as I just don't know if I could handle the stress right now. So most of my "to do" list will be centered around figuring out WordPress (as I hope no glitches appear); most of my list, obviously, will be made up tomorrow once I have a better idea of what I need to do. Besides those house keeping things, I have this list:

    • Create skeleton reviews for at least ten of my next reads
    • Get caught up on my Pinterest Posts (schedule at least three)
    • Post March Stats/April Goals
    • Post Titanic Challenge
    • Prepare Titanic MiniChallenges/Misc Posts
    • Watch Titanic and schedule review
    • Visit at least twenty other participants (add to my Google Reader)

What about you? Are you participating? Really, Bloggiesta is the perfect time to reserve a weekend for blogging (sort of a blog-a-thon rather than a read-a-thon). It's definitely worth it!
