  • Before the Bell Rings: Has "Reading" Become TOO Fun?

Before the Bell Rings: Has "Reading" Become TOO Fun?

Yesterday I was home sick and, consequently, watched way too much television. One specific commercial kept bothering me; even when it wasn't playing, I found myself cursing it.

    Here it is:

    Should "reading" be that fun?

There are a few positive concepts I do like about the Vtech Reader — it does start kids reading off at an early age and I think it does get kids excited about reading.

But, does it give kids (and, subsequently, students) a false expectation about reading? Does it set young readers up for failure? By this I mean, when I get them as Freshmen and I tell them they need to actually open a book (with, gasp, no pictures!) and read it, I already get groans and this consistent push against reading. It's something I've really struggled with in only the few months that I've been teaching. I constantly have to prove that reading isn't "lame" or "dorky" and that reading can, oh I don't know, be fun and beneficial.

Yes, I believe we need to use technology to our advantage and not shun away from it. I have a few students who bring in Nooks and Kindles (oh the jealousy!); I completely support this because they still have to do the reading. It seems that this Vtech Reader is more like watching an interactive movie than reading; it doesn't take any effort.

I do think it could work with the right amount of parental cooperation; like in the commercial, if a parent actually sat down with the child to "read" with the Reader and asked the student to sound out the words they knew — then it could work. But the majority of parents, I feel, would simply give the Reader to their children and say, "Go read." If you were actually going to take the time to "read" with your kids, pick up an actual book!

A few weeks ago I had a student announce to the entire class that "Reading is pointless and a waste of [this students'] time. When I need to find information I'll Google it, watch it on YouTube, or rent the movie." I fear that this sort of animated, interactive reader supports this particular ninth grader's educational "plan of attack."

Kids have been trained that if they wait long enough, there will be some sort of technology to do the work for them. Teachers have to fight this battle every day and I really don't support this "Once upon a time there were books" concept. There are still books and when children become kindergarteners, fifth graders, ninth graders, High School graduates, College graduates (etc) they will be expected to do the work for themselves by reading these "old guard" books.

I'm still ill and had to call into my Principal last night for a substitute; it's the first time I've had a sub that wasn't planned (one time I attended a conference and needed a sub). Just going in to school to get everything done and my room some what presentable completely took it out of me.

When I got home last night I had a great surprise waiting for me:

Button had brought me a care package! Complete with drugs (DayQuil and NyQuil) with spaghetti noodles and sauce, Vicks, two brownies, and a card.

I had already started cooking Chicken Noodle Soup for Dan so that when he returned from work he'd have something to eat and wouldn't think I was completely hopeless. But the spaghetti and noodles definitely came in handy this morning when Dan left for work — he already had this lunch packed. The drugs saved me last night — I slept SO well for the first time in two nights!

Button is my favorite Book Friend — she's the one that goes to all the bookish events with me! The card she gave me was SO cute! It said "Get well soon. But if you don't, we're still going to The Book Shop on Wednesday!" On Wednesday we get out of school an hour early and Dan has to work, so last week we planned a trip to our favorite Second Hand Book Store (plus, it's payday).

So today, after a great night of sleep, I'm up and definitely not about. I'm lounging, still in my PJs, with Max (my Mac), a copy of hot cocoa, "Shade," and currently listening to "To Kill a Mockingbird." I'm planning on getting loads done but being a complete bum at the same time. Except for all the tests I need to grade (when I feel up to it).

What are your plans for the day?

Yes, believe it or not, I am still alive.

I know I've been extremely absent this month, so much so that Sheila (Book Journey) called to check in on Friday. It was extremely touching and thoughtful — thank you Sheila! It meant a lot to know that someone actually noticed my absence — what a great thing book bloggers are!

I seem to be in some kind of rut but I'm hoping to come out of it. I finished a book this week (Fall for Anything — Courtney Summers) and have two reviews to write and few other random posts so expect to see more from me this week. School takes a lot out of me; I'm generally in bed by 8pm and still have a hard time rolling out of bed in time to get to work. I get home from work at 4pm and it's so hard to correct anything much less, oh I don't know, read, post, or blog hop before 8pm without feeling absolutely spent. I have been told this is simply the average first year teacher experience and have been promised that it gets better.

Wedding stuff is going great; Dan and I traveled to Bismarck, ND, last weekend for our first marriage "class" and on Veteran's Day my friend Button took me around Sioux Falls and I found a lot of important essentials (more on that later). Everything is seemingly falling into place (thankfully) and hopefully now I can start to relax and enjoy being engaged.

On Friday I traveled back to Aberdeen for Northern's Semester Swing Dance. The Swing Dance has always been an epically important day of the semester for me, even now that I am no longer a student. It's the one night a season where college students and alumni can get dressed up (in a classy fashion), go to the historical Ward Hotel on main street, an enjoy listening to Jazz Music and dancing. When I say dancing I don't mean that grinding "hot mess" kind but legitimate dancing, whether it be the waltz, Latin jazz, jazz, or even the tango. Set in an old hotel on a dance floor with a chandelier and other architectural features and with everyone dressed up, it is almost like stepping back in time. It's the most amazing experience.

My best friend Puffer (below) has been my date for the past three years and I wouldn't have it any other way. Yes things have changed, now that I'm not a student I don't everyone there and my dance partners have significantly decreased now that I'm engaged (Dan had to work this weekend thus his absence). Unfortunately the Swing Dance has been growing in popularity; this alone would be great. However, we have outgrown our amazing "mood-setting" venue and by 10:00 it is impossible to find a spot on the dance floor to actually dance without getting stepped on. Because of this, and because I am old lady who goes to sleep at 8pm, Puffer and I actually left at 11pm for IHop.

I left Aberdeen on Saturday and got back to Sioux Falls around noon and had plenty of time to do absolutely nothing before Dan finished work and we could go see Harry Potter! Last night, unfortunately, I came down with an awful cold and feel horrifically sick. So today I'm lounging, reading, and getting caught up in the blog world — exactly what the doctor ordered!

    So... what have I missed?

    How my morning went:

Wake up. Throw myself out of bed.

Sheila: Oh, you can go back to bed.
Me: Okay. Boom, hit the bed.

    20 minutes later.

Wake up. Throw myself out of bed. Do the morning routine. Go down to breakfast. Come back up to the fourth floor with a mysterious uniformed soldier in the elevator, make an awkward elevator moment comment, drop Sheila's muffin (not code for anything), sit down to eat my bagel.

Sheila: Blog! I need to get a picture of you blogging.
    Me: Okay.

Sit down to write an unknown post.

Sheila: Really, what are we going to do about your blog's name (see engagement) ? I'm obsessed with this. Maybe we could just cross out Miss and put Mrs.

    Wait a moment.

Sheila: Oh no, that won't work. We'd have to cross out Remmers too.
    Me: It's a hot mess.
Sheila: Oo! We could call it Hot Mess!!
    Me: Maybe...

So... it's been exactly a week since the engagement. We have booked the church, the reception area, the caterer, and the photographer. I feel like we have all the major bases covered — at least for a while. Now I have been presented a new dilemma: my online identity is "Miss Remmers." My email, my blog (obviously), my Twitter, all the forums, all the groups — I am Miss Remmers.

What do I do when I'm Mrs. Urbanec in eight months. Do I change it all? Will people get it? Do I come up with a different blog name, like "hot mess?" If I leave it as is, in five years when people (or students) don't necessarily remember that I was once a Remmers, will they get confused with my loss of identity?

    It's so confusing!

What do you think? Here are some of the one's I came up with:

    • Hot Mess (inspired by Sheila)
    • Identity Crisis — The Reading Adventures of a Miss turned Mrs.
    • No Name
    • I Blog About Books — Not My Loss of Identity?
    • Do You Know Who I Am? I Don't.

Remember a couple weeks ago when I mentioned that I had been approved to begin teaching "The Hunger Games" to a class of freshmen? It's about time for an update.

After the initial introduction to the book and to Suzanne Collins, I told my students that we would be reading "The Hunger Games." Then, right after everyone had finished Chapter One, midterms happened. So we spent most of our time "getting caught up" in other classes (this class isn't English 9, it's called Reading Skills and is for students who particularly struggle. It's meant to be sort of a glorified study hall).

After that "hot mess," I tried to get the students back on track. But I found that they just refused to read on their own. So I read Chapter Two aloud... and they loved it. They listened so quietly I thought they were sleeping. They answered all my questions at the end and they begged for more the next day. It was a fantastic "teaching moment."
Because my read-a-loud of Chapter Two was an impromptu lesson, I didn't remember exactly what had happened during that particular chapter. As I was reading along I realized that this was the chapter where Peeta was introduced and where Katniss' relationship with her sister and with her mother was really explored.

Allow me to "Set the Scene" for you:

The classroom was completely quiet. My students were all watching me and waiting to find out what was going to happen after Prim's name was called at the Reaping. As I'm sitting in my chair in the middle of the room reading aloud, I realize what's happening in the text. I continue reading; when I get to the part where Katniss comes to and races towards Prim to volunteer (is this a spoiler?) my voice wavers and my arm hairs raise in anticipation. I feel my face growing hot and I fear tears are about to escape my ducts (I'm trying to poetic... obviously). But, because I'm a professional, I fight through the sadness and continue reading.

It was the most fantastic experience. Now, I've only read "THG," "CF," and "MJ" once (so far) so it's all still pretty new to me. But I had no idea such emotions would resurface while reading this novel aloud. It was a haunting experience, especially after just having finished "MJ."

Since then, I have had a few other emotional teaching moments while reading aloud to my students but none that really strike me as hard as this one did. Whether you've read "THG" once, twice, or a million times before — I highly suggest reading it out loud, even if only for yourself. While we're only on Chapter Five, I've found that the novel is SO much more powerful (is that even possible?) when read aloud.

I know, I've been absent for about a week. It's been crazy: getting moved in, best friend's wedding, my birthday, spending time with Dan, moving into my classroom, and... oh yea, my computer crashed.

I know, can you believe it? I've gone through TWO computers since November! It's horrific! So now I'm using my PC (the one that crashed in November for the time being). I plan on purchasing another Mac after I get paid at the end of September. So needless to say, it's been crazy. I did get a bit of reading done last week, but don't expect much this week as...

    I START SCHOOL TOMORROW!
I'm already exhausted, but I'm SO excited to actually meet my students tomorrow and begin this part of my life. I'll have many "first days of school" throughout the next forty years, but I'll never have another "first day of teaching." I'm feeling relatively prepared — at least for tomorrow. I'll catch up somehow. I just want send out a BIG thank you to everyone who has encouraged me and been here since the beginning last June. I've always said that the purpose of this blog was for my students in the future; well the future is here! I can't wait to share this resource of reviews and the blogging community with them! Please be patient in the weeks to come with my lack of reading, but I will definitely keep you all posted with how school is going!

Because I'm proud of it: I give you my classroom in digital form!

This past weekend I returned to Bismarck, ND to watch Dan swim competitively at a meet (my first swim meet EVER!). I also made a trip down to Aberdeen for my best friend Mary's final bridal shower before the wedding.

On Thursday, Dan took me to the zoo in Bismarck and then we went to a movie (The Last Airbender). On Friday, after helping Dan's brother and sister-in-law move across town, I took off for Aberdeen (3 hour drive) for Mary's shower. I returned early Saturday to continue to help with the moving. On Sunday after Dan's swim meet, we went to Despicable Me (SO cute — FYI) and mini-golfing.

Next week I leave with my mom for a family reunion and then a huge celebration in Western SD so I may be absent for a while, but I'll have pictures and great stories to tell (I may even get some reading done!).

Whoo! What a week! Last Wednesday my mom and I spontaneously left for Sioux Falls to get look for an apartment, obtain keys to my classroom and my curriculum materials, and fill out paperwork at the school district.

Surprisingly — everything went fantastic! Not only did I get keys to my classroom, but after calling over 30 apartment complexes I found the perfect apartment about five blocks from school for the right price! It was such a good deal we signed the lease right then and there and I have added four more keys to my key ring (two to the school and two to the apartment).

Mom and I then met up with Tyler, a friend from school, at a Mongolian Grill. It was FANTASTIC! I'll definitely be going back!

On Thursday Mom left for home and I left for Aberdeen for the 4th of July! Dan, Button, and I went to Eclipse before heading off to the lake! Button's lake was fantastic! While unsuccessful, I tried knee-boarding, wake-boarding, and tubing (I even lost a contact!). On the 4th we lit off fireworks and roasted 'smores. Then, to my surprise, Dan brought out his guitar and serenaded me in front of the other 20 or so people around the fire as fireworks went off. It may have been the most romantic moment of my life. Dan explained that he wrote the song, "Harry Potter Romance," before the sixth book came out but it wasn't until he met me (and wanted to impress me) that he finished the song. It worked. If you'd like to listen to the song — check it out at Harry Potter Romance by Piggy's Renditions on Myspace. You don't have to log in or be a member.

This past weekend Dan and I traveled to Central Minnesota for my All School Reunion. We had quite the adventure.

After driving down dirt roads and following subtle signs we found our campground and camp site. After careful consideration of the best possible placement of our tent — we began to set up. As soon as we got the tent set up (and boy, are we NOT campers) a campground employee pulled up to tell us that we were in a tornado warning and that everyone should head to the bunker.

Now, this may sound ridiculous, but before heading to the bunker I had to grab my phone, and then my camera, and then my umbrella, and then my rain boots — just in case. By the time I had all the necessities — it began to rain.

Here's something you probably don't know about me. I hate the rain. I hate cold feet and frizzy hair. True story: from winter to spring I wear rain boots or snow boots every day... religiously. So my first reaction is to jump in the car. As soon as Dan gets in the car I hear this "THUD" and a second later we are bombarded with sheet after sheet of hail (round as a quarter!). I look over at our poor tent and it's still standing (thank goodness!) but neither Dan or I are quite sure what to do? Do we attempt driving to the bunker? Or is it best to stay put?

After a few moments of the deafening sound of hail hitting my car — we decide it's best to stay where we are then try to drive through it. I constantly look at the tent and (with luck) it remains standing. Twenty minutes later the hail and rain have subsided — but our camp site is flooded and (after braving the elements to check) so is our tent.

Needless to say, Dan and I ended up staying at a Holiday Inn. So much for our adventure!

The rest of the weekend flew by; on Friday night we went into Benson for the All School Reunion street dance and live bands at various venues. On Saturday we watched the parade, I posed for the All School Reunion Photo, and then we went to my dad's book signing at the library. It looked like rain so we decided to go to the local theaters free showing of "How to Train Your Dragon" — which was FANTASTIC by the way! After the show Dan, Brandon (BFF from High School), and I decided to go bowling — and wow am I awful! Shortly after that it began to storm (again!) and all of the outside activities were either canceled or no one showed up. So Dan and I headed back to our hotel in Morris to find that a Street Dance had been moved inside due to the weather! The night was not lost! We danced for a couple of hours before retiring (dry and tired).

It was a fantastic and exciting weekend overall and it was great to meet up with friends from high school.

My summer 2010 travels continued last weekend. On Thursday I traveled to Aberdeen to spend the night with my best friend Mary (Bride in August). I had a great time reconnecting with her and learning how to put together flowers arrangements (which is harder than it looks).

On Friday I left for Bismarck, ND to visit Dan (and meet the family). While in Bismarck, Dan took me to the Capitol. It was a horribly windy and cold day so I won't even bother showing you the picture of Dan and I — but here's our friend Bill the Buffalo*.

On Saturday, Dan and I drove to Pierre, SD for Mary's Bridal Shower. While I was doing my Maid of Honor duties, Dan read and studied in the library for five hours. He was quite a trooper!

After the shower, Dan and I visited the Capitol. Yep, I was at two capitols in two days. And if I was honest, the capitol in Pierre was MUCH more awesome than the one in Bismarck.

Sunday was mostly spent hanging out with Dan and his family. After church we played mancala (I kicked butt) and chess (Dan swept the board with my face).

After getting home around 5pm on Monday I can say one thing: I am exhausted! I feel like I could sleep forever and a day! I'm lucky I have that luxury during the week; although I really need to crack down on Operation Find an Apartment.

This week I leave for my All School Reunion in Central Minnesota on Friday and will return on Sunday. This will be my first weekend 100% Wedding Free! Isn't that crazy!

Well my life continues as the summer of weddings. Last week I left for South Dakota early Friday morning. I picked up my date (Dan — to be pictured) in Fargo and then we left for Sioux Falls/Flandreau area. We couldn't check into the hotel until later so we ventured into Sioux Falls, stopped by a Barnes and Noble (which I left empty handed), and then went to the movies.

Saturday was Go Day. We had one wedding in Flandreau at 2pm and one wedding in Sioux Falls (40 minute drive) at 4pm. Could we do it?

Yes we could (without a minute to spare!).

Yesterday we began our journey back home, Dan to Bismarck, ND, and me to Northern Minnesota. As soon as I got home my dad and I went fishing... well he went fishing, I read "Living Dead in Dallas" in the boat.

This week I leave Thursday for Rapid City, SD (yes, where Wedding #1) was held for a wedding on Friday. Then Saturday morning I will back track to Pierre, SD for my best friend's bridal shower (wedding is in August).

While I've been gallivanting around the Midwest, I did miss a huge portion of Bloggiesta (June 2010 Edition). This makes me extremely sad, but I do plan on spending a lot of time on the blog this week as well as embarking on Mission: Find an Apartment!
