  • I Am Number Four: Movie Review

    I Am Number Four: Movie Review

    This is a bit late, but a few weekends ago (when the movie came out) I saw "I Am Number Four" — yes, Alex Pettyfer is on FIRE. Two book to movie films in less than a month! I reviewed "Beastly " earlier this week also starring Pettyfer based on the book by Alex Flinn. Last August I reviewed "I Am Number Four " by Pittacus Lore. It was the first book I did a book talk of in my classroom and when I loaned out my precious signed ARC, one kid later it had bite marks, torn covers, and dog eared pages. Needless to say it came out of my classroom. I have since loaned it to family friends and coworkers and let's just say this: you can tell the book has been loved. I am DYING to get my hands on the next book, "The Power of Six" (August 23, 2011), and am hoping to score a copy at BEA.

    Unfortunately (ugh, I hate starting like this) — if you haven't read the book yet I wouldn't advise seeing this movie. We all know that movies leave out loads of details from the book, but seeing this movie without first reading the book will, I think, leave viewers completely in the dark. Last week in class two students summed it up perfectly: "it lacked plot." I asked them if they'd read the book and they said no. Without the back story that the book provides, the movie is confusing and the plot falls flat. They only mention in passing at the very beginning of the movie that they are being "hunted down one by one" but it is never explained that it has to be in order and that once Six found Four all bets were off. All of Lorien was left out and Pittacus Lore was never even mentioned. So, please, if you haven't read the book — read it before you see the movie. You'll save yourself a headache.

    That aside, as I have read the book, I was able to follow the extremely (almost too) fast paced film. I was able to fill in the left out details and as a result the plot wasn't lacking. Even with the fantastic plot, the characters were lacking a bit for me. Now I'm not one of those people who can't separate books from movies. I am able to view both forms of media as two different entities with the same story. I am not noe of those people who will let a movie "ruin the book" for me. So without comparing my connection with the characters while reading the book, I felt like the character development was extremely lacking. The only character I felt any emotion toward was Number Four. Some of it was bad acting but not always. For instance, Dianna Argon did a great job but I'm still weary of Sarah. I can't place it, but I just don't trust the girl. I was extremely disappointed with Henri; one of my favorite characters in the book and I felt no emotion toward him at all. I was also disappointed with Sam, the nerdy best friend. I just wasn't impressed with most of the characters in the movie.

    Although, I will say this: I liked the movie version of Number Six much more than the book! Wow! This girls' got... uh... balls? And, does this face look familiar? Percy Jackson anyone!

    The scene I was most looking forward to was the "Haunted Forest" scene and it was perfect. It was exactly how I had envisioned it. It was also great to see the ending — again — how I had envisioned it while reading the book. The dog was perfect as were the Mogadorians were great too.

    Overall, this is a great movie (as I had read the book) but I wouldn't recommend it to "standard" movie goers. Take my advice. Read the book — it's fantastic and then see this movie! The two together are a story worth knowing.

    I could be completely wrong too — Anna over at Anna Read's loved the movie without reading the book.

  • Beastly: Movie Review

    Beastly: Movie Review

    This weekend I had to drag my BFF Button to see Beastly. She hadn't read the book yet so I had to bribe her by paying for her ticket — but I just couldn't wait to see it! Plus, I watched Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" earlier that day and was on a one way track.

    I loved the book by Alex Flinn — check out my review of "Beastly. " And in case you haven't seen the trailer, here you go:

    If you haven't read the book yet (or don't plan to), you can still see the movie. The movie did leave something rather big out at the end that they alluded to with the cinematography throughout — but you wouldn't know it was missing.

    I thought that Alex Pettyfer (Kyle) did a fantastic job and he was great to look at (scarred or not). I know that Alex Flinn (the author of Beastly) has talked to the press recently about the change in the "Beast" from her novel to the screen — most notably the loss of hair and claws. To be honest, when I was reading "Beastly" I didn't really like the hair and claws bit; it felt like it was straight from the Disney movie. I really like how Kyle looked in the film because it seemed more modern and even plausible. There were a few parts where Kyle was "stalking" Lindy (same as in the book) — but he's so good to look at I didn't mind.

    I really believed Pettyfer's portrayal of Kyle — it was fantastic acting on his part (albeit a bit of bad writing). I felt his pain and his heart break and, despite my feelings toward Vanessa Hudgens, I couldn't help but sit at the edge of my seat saying "KISS HER!" several times.

    Vanessa Hudgens. Vanessa Hudgens made this movie awkward — almost like Kirsten Stewart awkward. Yes, at times Pettyfer was also awkward (see the trailer) but that's just bad writing. I don't know — I just didn't buy into Hudgen's portrayal of Lindy at all.

    Random: I'm really glad they left out the chat room bit.

    What really made this movie for me was Neil Patrick Harris as the tutor. He did a fantastic job (as always!). I found myself looking for him on screen to be the source of witty banter and conversation. He lightened the mood without taking away from the seriousness of the story. Seriously, if for no other reason — see this movie for NPH!

    This movie was well paced and the ending was perfect! I don't quite remember exactly how the book ended — but the movie ending was flawless. Again, I was on the edge of my seat the last five minutes. I liked how they didn't shy away from the fact that the story is a bit cliche: "We've all heard that story." But they did it in such a way that it was new and exciting. I never doubted the ending, but I still willed it to happen.

    If you didn't like the book because of the cliches — see the movie. The movie somehow eliminates the awful "nail on a chalkboard" feelings I had when I read the book. If you haven't read the book yet, go ahead and read the book or see the movie first — it's a great story with an amazing actor (Harris) and some great eye candy (Pettyfer — okay, he's a good actor too).

  • Confessions of a Shopaholic — Movie Review

    Confessions of a Shopaholic — Movie Review

    From Amazon.com...

    "Fall in love with the adorable Becky Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) in the hilarious romantic comedy Confessions Of A Shopaholic. Becky s desperate for a job writing for a high-fashion magazine in glamorous New York. She gets her stilettos in the door writing a personal finance column at a sister publication. Much to her surprise, her column, The Girl In The Green Scarf, becomes a hit, and she falls head over high heels for her handsome, overworked boss (Hugh Dancy). But Becky has a secret that leads to some hilarious high jinks that could unravel it all. From the best-selling novel, and featuring the perfect comedic cast, it s the feel-good romantic comedy you ll fall in love with over and over."

    It bothered me that they changed it from London to New York. This could be due to the fact that I listened to "Confessions of a Shopaholic" and that the narrator was British. It's probably that. But it still bothered me. At least Hugh Darcy is British — and he was plenty perfect to look at!

    Also, gardening... when did this happen?

    I absolutely loved Suze! She was depicted perfectly! Different from the character in the book, but wonderfully so! I loved the added depth of the relationship between Suze and Becky. Seeing Suze heartbroken near the middle of the movie was what I, as a viewer, needed in order to connect with Becky. I also really liked Becky's parents; they stole the scenes they were in.

    I was also a BIT grossed out by Tarky and Suze's romance... you know, as they are cousins in the book. I also really wanted to see the date between Tarky and Becky. I wish they would have focused on him a bit more.

    If you read my book review — I had a hard time connecting with Becky because I found her unlikeable. I didn't necessarily have that problem with "Movie Becky." I'm not sure if this was because it was a movie or if it was because movies rarely have a constant narrating voice — like the audio book I listened to.

    Overall, I think I actually preferred this movie to the book (gasp!) simply because I found it easier to relate to (and not completely hate) Becky. The movie sort of humanized her. I'm not sure if I'd recommend this movie to someone who didn't read the book. It is an extremely light film (I like light chick flicks but this one lacked the emotion of others). But, as stated before, the film did make up for it with Hugh Darcy.

    What a weird review huh? Bottom line: if you've read the book — see the movie. If not, it's completely up to you what to do with your Friday night.

  • My Sister's Keeper — The Movie

    My Sister's Keeper — The Movie

    Well, mom and I went to see "My Sister's Keeper" last night. And while yes, this is a book blog — this movie is based off of a most beloved book, so a review is in order.

    I know I'm not the only fan of the book to be disappointed by the movie. Yes, I cried. Yes, it was a heart warming (and wrenching) film. I found myself loathing Sara Fitzgerald (Cameron Diaz). I was happily surprised with this, because I'm a fan of Diaz, I sort of assumed she'd soften the role. But she played "evil" very well. Okay, maybe not evil — but if you've read the book you know what I mean.

    I was also delightfully surprised at the amazing character of Kate (Sofia Vassilieva). And... well actually the WHOLE cast was amazing! So that's not the reason I was disappointed. And it's not because the ending was changed — I went in to the theater knowing that after reading this at Jodi Picoult's website:

    "Yes, I know the ending is different. Yes, I know some of you are very upset. I didn't change it. The author has no control over the movie, and it was hard for me to accept too. However, there's a great deal in the movie that I think is great, and I enjoyed watching it — and I hope you did too. Please don't email me asking why I changed the ending, or "let" Hollywood do that — it wasn't something I had any control over."

    It was more about how the film was portrayed. I didn't like all the random 'time switching' without any heads up or clues to what year it was. It made it extremely hard to follow, in my opinion.

    Okay, I won't lie. When I got out of the theater, if I hadn't have read the above post — my mom and I both would have sent angry (more frustrated than angry I guess) emails. I thought they ruined it with the changed ending — ruined the book, I mean. I was just very disappointed in such the drastic change that was made. For those of you who haven't read the book — read it first. You won't be disappointed. Until you see the movie — and then you will be.

    Any one else's thoughts on the movie or book? Don't give anything away!

  • Twilight — Stephenie Meyer

    Twilight — Stephenie Meyer

    From Amazon.com...

    "When Bella Swan moves from sunny Phoenix to Forks, Washington, a damp and dreary town known for the most rainfall in the United States, to live with her dad, she isnt expecting to like it. But the level of hostility displayed by her standoffish high school biology lab partner, Edward Cullen, surprises her. After several strange interactions, his preternatural beauty, strength, and speed have her intrigued. Edward is just as fascinated with Bella, and their attraction to one another grows. As Bella discovers more about Edwards nature and his family, she is thrown headlong into a dangerous adventure that has her making a desperate sacrifice to save her one true love."

    Well, I was pleasantly surprised. I shouldn't be that surprised — what with all of the praise and all. I found myself yearning (yes, actually yearning) to watch the movie — even though I really disliked it! I'm not quite sure what that was about — but, really... I was counting my cash and getting ready to drive the thirty miles to the nearest Walmart (but then discovered that I only had $24 and couldn't afford the movie AND the gas that would be necessary to get the movie — so what did I do? I asked my parents of course to pick it up for me on their way back from a golfing tournament in South Dakota). I still don't think I'll really enjoy the movie — but just the idea of connecting with the characters on that level (alright, I'll admit it — Edward is amazingly Darcy like).

    But ANYWAY!:) I enjoyed this book and found myself thinking about it when I wasn't reading it (always a good indicator of a good book). The narrative tone really sucked me in from the first page — I could feel Bella's despair of moving and I could relate to her hatred of the rain and clouds. I'm a Minnesota girl through and through — but I much prefer a sunny snowy day than a cloudy rainy day. The sarcasm really unique — I don't think I've ever read anything that I can compare it too... so honest. But it was subtle too — not over done. It was probably my favorite part of the book.

    Of course, if you've read about my love/hate relationship — I should address how I feel about Bella, and I'll try not to compare it to 'movie Bella'. She seemed like she was or wanted to remain independent — but after meeting Edward she seemed very clingy and needy — but I've never been in love so it could just be me. I think I didn't hate her as much as I thought I would because I loved the narrative and tone so much. So unique and just, I don't know, against the grain. So much of YA literature seems to depict the same heroine. Bella brought a very refreshing voice to the mix.

    I will say, that it really bothered me that Stephanie Meyer felt like she had to constantly remind readers that Bella was clumsy. Obviously, because of the ending, I'm sure. But still — it was over done and completely redundant. Very annoying.

    And obviously, I'd better at least mention Edward Cullen. While I'm not completely crazy about 'movie' Edward — I really like 'book' Edward (gasp!). Not Darcy-obsessed, but I can see why Walmart is running with the Edward craze.

    Overall, I can see why people like this book. I'll definitely be starting New Moon tomorrow, if not tonight.

    I read Twilight while watching bits and pieces of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on ABC Family. I thought it was kind of tragically ironic.

    Haunted Halloween with Melinda Metz & Laura Burns and a giveaway!

    HOLLYWOOD FOREVER
    By: Melinda Metz and Laura Burns

    Several years ago, we decided to spend a Thursday evening with some friends attending a reading of the screenplay The Maltese Falcon. Pretty tame and boring, right? (Well, not the screenplay. The Maltese Falcon is a classic, filled with murder and betrayal.) But a reading? Tame. Or so we thought.
    It turned out that the reading was going to be held at Hollywood Forever. That might sound like an exciting place, filled with movie star glamour. But here's what it really is: a graveyard. Literally.
    The

    Hollywood

    Forever

    Cemetery is located in the middle of the city, directly behind the

    Paramount lot (where we worked when we were on the writing staff of the TV show

    Roswell). A mile or two away, the famous hills rise up above

    Los Angeles, and the

    Hollywood sign looms. From the grounds of the graveyard, you can see the sign glowing above. Lots of old-time movie stars are buried there, along with well-known Tinseltown writers and directors-- Rudolph Valentino, Janet Gaynor, Victor Fleming, Peter Lorre (one of the stars of The Maltese Falcon), Tyrone Power, Cecil B. de Mille, and John Huston (director of the movie). So even though it's a cemetery, it is actually pretty glamorous.
    It was a chilly autumn night, and we entered the cemetery just after dark. The fronds of the towering palm trees click-clacked overhead. Tiki torches led the way through the graveyard to a large rectangular reflecting pool filled with water lilies. This is part of Douglas Fairbanks's memorial. His marble tomb stands at one end of the pool.
    We sat down on the lawn to one side of the still water, sharing the space with a few ducks and a crowd of fellow movie-lovers. We'd brought sandwiches for dinner, and lots of other people had wine and cheese. As we waited for the reading to start, we talked about how weird and even creepy it felt to be picnicking in a cemetery. Yet, we decided, somehow it also felt very right that the reading would take place there. We imagined the old

    Hollywood stars buried all around us would take it as a tribute.
    At least we hoped so. A few of those famous actors and directors had had notoriously bad tempers. If they were angry at us for snacking on top of their final resting places, we could be in serious trouble.
    But everything seemed peaceful. The actors—Felicity Huffman and Evan Handler among them-- took their places on the stone patio on the opposite end of the pool from the tomb. The only electric lights that were on shone down on them.
    The reading was going great. The actors were bringing the dialogue of the old film to life with their fast delivery and wit. (A taste. Joel Cairo : You always have a very smooth explanation…
    Sam Spade: What do you want me to do, learn to stutter?)
    The tension was mounting as the mystery became more and more twisted.
    And then it happened. Just when Sam Spade was about to find out who had killed his partner. The power went out, plunging the actors into darkness. Their microphones went silent.
    In the dark, suddenly it didn't seem so pleasant to be lounging around on top of a bunch of dead people. From far above, the

    Hollywood sign glowed, pale white and eerie, throwing a dim, strange pallor over the graveyard. The mood changed. We heard nervous whispering from the others in the crowd. We'd been thinking that movie stars would like the attention, even though they weren't living. But maybe they'd had enough attention during their lives. Maybe they wanted to be left in peace. Maybe we were surrounded by a bunch of beautiful, glamorous, seriously pissed-off ghosts.
    It was only a few minutes until the lights came back on, but those minutes felt loooong.
    When the power finally sputtered back to life, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Some people just got up and left without even waiting for the reading to be over. Everyone was on edge. On our way home later, we wondered if we'd angered the spirits of

    Hollywood. No more picnics in the cemetery for us!
    But like so many

    Hollywood tales, it turned out that this ghost story had a happy ending. The very next day, it was all over the news that John Ritter had died. He'd passed away the night before… at exactly the time that the lights had gone out in

    Hollywood

    Forever

    Cemetery.
    It's spooky, sure. And it probably means that there were a lot of glamorous ghosts all around us in the graveyard. But at least we know that those

    Hollywood stars who had gone before him had woken up just in time to give John Ritter their welcome.

    @Phury_BDB: *looks around at everyone, smiling* I’m with the Cop. Doing great.
    @Tohrment_BDB: *running my hand over my head* Just getting my bearings again, but better than I've been in a long while.
    @MarissaH_BDB: I’m quite well this evening. Thank you.
    @CormiaC_BDB: *looking up from plans for the medical center* Very well, thank you. I hope you are both well, also.
    @BellaR_BDB: *smiling warmly* Very good, thank you. How are the two of you? *glances at both of you*
    @DocJaneW_BDB: *beaming* I'm great, excited about the new plans. I apologize if I'm a bit preoccupied.
    @Blaylock_BDB: *pausing our xbox game* I am doing great! Kicking @Qhuinn_BDB’s butt at the moment. *laughs and ducks away from Qhuinn as he tries to punch me, but only grazes my arm*
    @Qhuinn_BDB: I’ll be a helluva lot better after a few shots of Herradurra. Hey, @FritzDoggen_BDB, would you mind bringing me some limes and salt?
    @FritzDoggen_BDB: *nods and leaves to find limes and salt*

    L: I’m great thanks – really excited to be here with everyone. *looks up at everyone around the room*
    J: Yeah, we’re both really excited to be here. We’ve been so busy planning this Halloween event that it’s great to take this time away to hang out with everyone. *small smile* Oh, I know something that I’ve wanted to know… What’s the hardest part about living so close together?

    @Wrath_BDB: The lack of privacy. *grins towards @BethR_BDB*
    @Rehvenge_BDB: *feels overwhelming gratitude to NOT live here*
    @Zsadist_BDB: Keeping people out of your shi.I mean biz.
    @Butch_BDB: *laughs* I take it you haven’t smelled the gym. You’d never ask that if you have. These bastards stink.

    L: *wrinkles my nose*

    @Butch_BDB: *laughs* Yeah, that’s what I’m talkin’ about.
    @Vishous_BDB: Getting to the food before Rhage eats it all. *nods head to Butch* His snoring. Wondering why the sin eater and that one *points @Lassiter_BDB* are always here.
    @Butch_BDB: Hey man, you can’t possibly hear me snoring through the walls.
    @Vishous_BDB: I have vampire hearing. I hear everything.
    @Rhage_BDB: *glares at V* Hey there is plenty of food left for you. Sometimes.
    @Phury_BDB: It’s not really a problem for me anymore. *looks over at @CormiaC_BDB, smiles* But I’d agree with @Vishous_BDB — trying to wrangle the food away from @Rhage_BDB was always a challenge.
    @MaryL_BDB: I don’t mind the closeness, though sometimes the wild games of football make it tough for us to get alone time with our boys.
    @Tohrment_BDB: *Doesn't answer*
    @BellaR_BDB: *rolling eyes at @Zsadist_BDB’s answer* I think privacy is the biggest challenge. You have none living together.
    @BethR_BDB: Sometimes it can be overwhelming, but it’s a large place so it isn’t too hard to find a private space. *smiles @Wrath_BDB*
    @MarissaH_BDB: *smiling* I wouldn’t be anywhere else. I found friends and family here and a new purpose. *meets @Butch_BDB’s eyes, seeing his pride in me*
    @DocJaneW_BDB: I love it here but I'm looking forward to all the time I'll be spending at the clinic once it opens.
    @CormiaC_BDB: *smiles@Phury_BDB* Everyone was wonderful to me when I stayed here.
    @Lassiter_BDB: *points @Vishous_BDB* Him.
    @Blaylock_BDB: I really enjoy having @John_MatthewBDB and @Qhuinn_BDB so close, but at times it is hard to live with Qhuinn, if you know what I mean. *blushes*
    @Qhuinn_BDB: I guess it can be a pain if I want some privacy. Sure, we can go to the gym and hit the treadmill, but the house is pretty full. There’s always someone around.

    L: But, really would any of you have it any other way?

    @Butch_BDB: Nope.
    @Zsadist_BDB: No.
    @Vishous_BDB: S’all good.
    @Butch_BDB: Even with my snoring, man?
    @Vishous_BDB: Yeah. Even with.
    @Rhage_BDB: Not at all.
    @Phury_BDB: I sometimes miss being here every day with the Brothers, but I wouldn’t trade my life with Cormia and having the Chosen with us…
    @CormiaC_BDB: I think I’m right where I am meant to be…
    @Tohrment_BDB: *Thinks back to when it was just me with Wellsie, in our house and I decide not to answer, again*
    @Wrath_BDB: *watching Tohr’s internal turmoil shine in his eyes, then glancing around to all the brothers and their shellans* This is how it should be.
    @MaryL_BDB: I wouldn’t change it. I grew up an only child. I enjoy the company.
    @MarissaH_BDB: *shakes head* Absolutely not.
    @FritzDoggen_BDB: *smiles, pleased the house is full. Wishing @DariusBDB could see it*
    @BethR_BDB: At first I wasn’t sure how I’d like it, to be honest. But, I also knew that it was the right decision. Don’t get me wrong, it can be frustrating, and I don’t always have @Wrath_BDB’s undivided attention as often as I’d like… but it feels right to have everyone here.
    @Lassiter_BDB: PFFFT Hell yeah. *But really likes it here*

    J: @Lassiter_BDB – Well, what has been the biggest difference for you since being around all the brothers and their shellans?

    @Lassiter_BDB: I’m used to being alone so this many people is a huge difference. And having to put up with his mouth *points at @Vishous_BDB*
    @Blaylock_BDB: I would not change a thing!
    @Qhuinn_BDB: *nods at @Blaylock_BDB* I’m with him. Wouldn’t change it!

    J: And how about With Halloween coming up, any plans for the holiday?

    @Vishous_BDB: I am trying to get Jane to wear a hot nurse outfit. *winks @DocJaneW_BDB*
    @Rhage_BDB: I may let the beast out and take all the tootsie pops from kids that are too old to be trick or treating.

    L: *thinking how I’ve never been able to look at a tootsie pop the same since reading their stories*

    @MaryL_BDB: @Rhage_BDB! You wouldn’t! I guess I’ll be spending Halloween keeping @Rhage_BDB too busy to steal candy. *blushes*
    @Tohrment_BDB: *shakes head* Can't say I've thought about it.
    @Wrath_BDB: Beth wants to hand candy out, so we’ll head back to the house in town for Halloween night.
    @BethR_BDB: I look forward to handing out candy… and trying not to eat all of it myself. *laughs*
    @Lassiter_BDB: I’m with @Tohrment_BDB on this one.
    @Qhuinn_BDB: *cocks head to the side* Am I too old to dress up and go trick-or-treating?

    J: @Qhuinn_BDB — No, not at all! What would you dress up as??

    @Blaylock_BDB: Well, Q, you could go as Frankenstein with all that metal, but you might scare all the kids.
    @Qhuinn_BDB: The last thing @Wrath_BDB needs is a flock of hysterical human females following us home.

    L: Yes, but a more important question… Will any of you be helping Fritz carve pumpkins?

    @Vishous_BDB: Yeah. For Nalla.
    @Wrath_BDB: *nods in agreement, and shaking the dice for my turn*
    @Rhage_BDB: Yeah, for Nalla. *smiles at Nalla*
    @Tohrment_BDB: Of course, for Nalla. *Reflects on difficult memories before shaking it off*
    @BellaR_BDB: *laughs* Nalla’s going to have several pumpkins carved for her by these males! *looks at Nalla, smiles*
    @MaryL_BDB: I better be included in the pumpkin carving.
    @DocJaneW_BDB: I'm pretty wicked with a knife, it would be a shame not to. And of course I will add to the Nalla collection *laughs*
    @FritzDoggen_BDB: *smiles*
    @BethR_BDB: I can’t wait! I even made sure to get little Nalla-sized pumpkins to decorate. *smiling warmly*
    @Blaylock_BDB: *laughs* I will give anything a go for Nalla.
    @Qhuinn_BDB: I think pumpkin carving sounds like fun! Maybe I could pierce it, or give it a few tats? *smiles*

    L: I mean come on, you each have skills with knives, I’m sure you’d come up with something creative when it comes to carving pumpkins! What about you @Phury_BDB? You’re extremely artistic from what I’ve read… I think you’d have a knack for carving?

    @Vishous_BDB: I know I do, true?
    @Rhage_BDB: Not as good as mine.
    @Phury_BDB: And neither of your skills are actually as good as your egos lead you to believe. *laughs* But, yes, I’m sure I’ll be trying to carve some pumpkins for Nalla. And I’m sure @CormiaC_BDB will design something as well… and the Chosen will probably want to help… *cringes, thinking of the mess*
    @Wrath_BDB: *rolls snake eyes which lands me on Marvin Gardens and I buy it*
    @Tohrment_BDB: Not gonna lie, I'm better when I'm aiming a gun, but my knife skills are on point.

    J: @BellaR_BDB and @Zsadist_BDB, any plans for Halloween for Nalla?

    @Rehvenge_BDB: *an uncharacteristic smile lighting my face at the mere mention of my niece*
    @Zsadist_BDB: *looks over at @BellaR_BDB*
    @BellaR_BDB: *grins and glances at @Zsadist_BDB* I want to dress her up. I’m trying to decide between a princess and a punk rocker.
    @Vishous_BDB: I vote for punk rocker.
    @Lassiter_BDB: Oh you should dress her up like a little Mary Tyler Moore!
    @Rhage_BDB: We could get her a little dragon costume and she can look like me.
    @MarissaH_BDB: I think Nalla would make a wonderful princess.

    L: Well, if I had a vote, I’d say Punk Rocker, because Nalla sounds like she’s a princess everyday. *smiling while looking at Nalla and feeling the love swell in the room*

    @BellaR_BDB: *grin widening* I’m leaning toward the punk rocker, too. Maybe with a little mohawk like her Uncle. *glancing at @Zsadist_BDB and @Rehvenge_BDB, seeing matching expressions of disapproval… and laughing*

    J: Well, if I had a vote I’d say the best of both worlds – a Punk Rock Princess. *giggles* Maybe we could set up a play date sometime for Nalla and my little girl? *laughs* M already thinks she’s a vampire, and I have no idea where she got that idea from! *smiling*

    @BellaR_BDB: That would be nice! Nalla needs to be around other young.

    L: Okay… I’m sorry, enough with the Halloween talk… can I ask about scary movies at least? I know your movie watchers, so you have to have a favorite? For me, I’ll never be able to watch Poltergeist again ever since I saw it when I was I think 11 or 12. Nor will I ever be able to sleep with the closet door open again… *trails off and looks up for answers*

    @Vishous_BDB: I love that sh- stuff. I love the Halloween, the Freddy were pretty imaginative, true?
    @DocJaneW_BDB: *smiling at @Vishous_BDB* I'm with him, blood doesn't scare me. Though I like comedy based “horror” too – like Beetlejuice.
    @Rehvenge_BDB: *shudders* Any movie with spiders or scorpions creeps me the fu… I really can’t stomach those movies anymore.
    @Rhage_BDB: Yeah I love all of it. @MaryL_BDB hates it.
    @Tohrment_BDB: That Buried movie that's coming out looks pretty intense. Might have to check it. I like to watch people fleeing the likes of Godzilla the best, though *chuckles*

    L: @Tohrment_BDB – yeah, that Buried movie is one I really want to see. As for Godzilla, we’re talking Godzilla vs. Mothra originals right? What did you think of the remake?

    @Tohrment_BDB: *Furrows brow*Remakes are for people with no original ideas, know what I'm sayin? There's no excuse for messing with perfection.
    @BethR_BDB: *laughs along with @Tohrment_BDB* I always cheer for the monster.
    @Wrath_BDB: *raises a brow* Tohr, how many times have you seen Godzilla? Seriously, man. I’m going to send you to Bad Horror Flicks Anonymous soon.
    @Tohrment_BDB: Hey, it's a good flick. Besides, Bad Horror Flicks Anonymous shut down for lack of membership *grins @Wrath_BDB*.

    L: @Wrath_BDB actually, bad horror movies are the best! I’m all about those horrible B movies *says a little too excitedly*

    @Wrath_BDB: *shakes head* To each his own. You and Tohr should have a movie night sometime. *Nods towards the hallway* We have a movie theater in here. He’d be a lot less cranky with Lassy off his ass.
    @BellaR_BDB: *shudders* I’m not a scary movie fan. Comedies are more my style.
    @Lassiter_BDB: I like movies with more style.
    @Butch_BDB: Seems like Twilight would be right up your alley. They sparkle, you glow… you’re kinda like cousins. *glances over at @Vishous_BDB winking*
    @Phury_BDB: *looks @Lassiter_BDB* Is that what you call the Lifetime Women’s movies you and @Rhage_BDB watch?

    J: Hey, nothing wrong with Lifetime. They have some good stuff!
    L: *trying to picture @Rhage_BDB and @Lassiter_BDB passing a tissue box back and forth. Nope, can't see it.*

    @Rhage_BDB: I do not watch that crap!
    @MaryL_BDB: Scary movies aren’t my thing, though I did see a great foreign vampire film, Let the Right One In. Subtitles and everything. A little too cerebral for @Rhage_BDB. Love you baby. *winks*
    @CormiaC_BDB: I’ve not really watched any of the scary movies, but I have found I rather like some of the movies with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.

    L: @CormiaC_BDB – Have you seen Breakfast at Tiffany’s?

    @CormiaC_BDB: No I haven’t seen that movie yet. Is it an enjoyable film? If so, we’ll have to watch it.

    L: Speaking of movies, did any of you see Twilight? Or what about that other movie… what’s it called Jessica?
    J: Vampires Suck?
    L: Yeah… *laughing* that one?

    @Rehvenge_BDB: *shaking head in disgust*
    @Zsadist_BDB: *growls*
    @Wrath_BDB: I’m not a big movie watcher, but I hear the Cop likes that Twilight one.
    @Butch_BDB: *groans* Oh man, I knew that would come up…
    @Vishous_BDB: *grins* Oh yeah, the cop here loves to watch Twilight. Caught him watching one day when he thought I was asleep. And we all know @Rhage_BDB wishes he would sparkle.
    @Rhage_BDB: *rolls eyes* Says the vampire that doubles as a night light.
    @Phury_BDB: V, Did the t-shirts not arrive yet for @Butch_BDB and @Rhage_BDB? The ones that say “I love sparkly vamps”?
    @Lassiter_BDB: Nothing wrong with a little sparkle. *smiles*
    @Butch_BDB: *laughs* You’d fit right in with the Veggie Vamps, Lassy.
    @Tohrment_BDB: *shrugs* Never even heard of it.
    @MaryL_BDB: Oh no. I’ve heard the jokes, got to hear all about the kitchen fight, but Twilight not my cup of tea.
    @DocJaneW_BDB: *sarcastically* Fate… destiny… who believes in that? *laughs* Either way, I think I'd lose my bad ass bitch card, if I watched that one.
    @Qhuinn_BDB: Twi-what? *shakes head, laughing* No way, not happening.
    @BethR_BDB: I found a t-shirt that said “I <3 Boys who sparkle” but @Wrath_BDB didn’t see the humor in it. *chuckling at the memory*
    @Wrath_BDB: That’s because I’m not a boy nor do I sparkle, leelan. *smirks*
    @BellaR_BDB: *laughing* I’ve seen Twilight. I’m a vamp girl!
    @Blaylock_BDB: *Dropping my head and blushing* I have seen the Twilight movies and really liked them.

    J: Um, is this the wrong time to say that I’m ummm… Team Werewolf??

    @Tohrment_BDB: *grins*No worries, can't be jealous of something that only exists on the big screen and in fairytales.
    @Butch_BDB: *shaking my head* Team Werewolf? *laughs and then remembers I used to laugh at the thought of vampires… *
    @DocJaneW_BDB: *Thinking to myself that it would be a fascinating species to study, if they were real, before refocusing on the plans*

  • I Am a Stuck Up Snob: Across the Universe

    I Am a Stuck Up Snob: Across the Universe

    In case you live under a rock or have severely neglected your Google Reader, you are aware that Beth Revis' "Across the Universe" was released yesterday. If you need to jolt your memory, take a look at any one of these fantastic posts:

    Frenetic Reader
    The Compulsive Reader
    Books with Bite
    Book Soulmates
    Hooked To Books
    Chick Loves Lit
    Overflowing Shelf
    Lauren's Crammed Bookshelf

    I've heard talk about this novel for the past couple weeks and everyone sounded really excited. Here's the kicker and my confession: I ignored every single post in my Google Reader about this book. I ignored every review and every mention of it on Twitter. Yes, world — I stuck up my nose whenever I came across this book's title or cover.

    Why?! You ask me WHY?

    Because I hated the move "Across the Universe." Gasp. I know. Everybody supposedly loved that movie. Yes, I can appreciate the artistry and I love the Beatles music — but the movie did not float my boat. So immediately upon seeing the cover for Revis' "Across the Universe" and looking at the title — I became a book snob. I assumed it was book with the plot of the movie. I, for the life of me, couldn't figure out why everybody in the blogosphere was so excited for the release of "Across the Universe."

    Then, on Monday I was pursuing Flippin' Fabulous and saw this review. I'm not sure why I didn't immediately scroll down or exit out like I had been for so many weeks, but I heaved a huge "here we go" sigh and actually read the synopsis and the review.

    From Goodreads

    A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.
    Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules. Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next. Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

    After reading this I thought of one thing — my love for Battlestar Galactica.

    Yes, I admit it. I love Battlestar Galactica. What do "Across the Universe" and Battlestar Galactica have in common (that I know of)? Basically this: "A spaceship built of secrets and murder." But it's enough to peak my interest!

    I always knew I was a cover snob; I pick books up because they look pretty. But I never realized that I am an actual SNOB! That I would let the cover and title deter me from even being open minded about a book because I hated a movie just blows my mind (although, you have to admit, both covers do look similar). I feel bad as a reader that I would be so stuck up. So close-minded! It's something I definitely need to work on — to think, I almost would have never even looked at this book! It has a great synopsis and, I'll admit, the more I look at the cover the more I like it.

    Beth, please take this post as the most sincere apology I could come up with. I can't wait to read your book in the very near future.

    Godspeed.

  • Bookish Pet Peeve

    Is is just me, or does it bother anyone else when you see a newly published book with the characters from the movie on it? I see why publishers/movie makers do it — but still. It just bothers me seeing Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson's faces all over the Twilight books in Walmart when there should be an apple. And it's nothing against Stewart and Pattinson — even Jennifer Anniston and Owen Wilson (who I would marry if I could) on the cover of Marley and Me just drives me mad!

    Why does it bother me? I have no idea. Maybe because now it's almost impossible to find a new copy of the 'hands' Twilight book? Since I've already told you about my Twilight love/hate relationship — maybe I should use a different example. Marley and Me. I really enjoyed the movie — and I really enjoyed the book too! But why can't I have Owen Wilson and Jennifer Anniston on the DVD cover and Marley on the book cover? Why must they combine it?

    Obviously, I know why — marketing and sales. But still — I refuse to buy books with the move covers on it. In the case of Marley and Me, I saw the movie before I read the book and then when I went to look for the book I had to really search for about two weeks before I tracked down the 'original' cover.

    Am I crazy? Anybody else?

    Hearts that Survive — Yvonne Lehman

    "It was an okay read... one that lover's of all things 'Titanic' might enjoy." — Miss Remmers

    Release Date: February 29th, 2012
    Publisher: Abingdon Press
    Challenges: NetGalley Challenge, eBook Challenge, 75+ Challenge

    "On April 15, 1912, Lydia Beaumont is on her way to a new life with a boundless hope in love and faith. Her new friendship with Caroline Chadwick is bonded even more as they plan Lydia’s wedding on board the “grandest ship ever built.” Then both women suffer tragic losses when the “unsinkable” Titanic goes down. Can each survive the scars the disaster left on their lives?Decades later, Alan Morris feels like a failure until he discovers he is the descendant of an acclaimed, successful, heroic novelist who went down with the Titanic. Will he find his identity with the past, or will he listen to Joanna Bettencourt, Caroline’s granddaughter, who says inner peace and success come only with a personal relationship with the Lord?Will those who survived and their descendants be able to find a love more powerful than their pain?"
    I'll admit it, I'm a Titanic junkie. In 1997 I was 10 years old and I remember begging my dad to take me to the movie and (in retrospect I was probably a little bit too young) and I remember him saying: "You know how it ends! It sinks!" And, honest to God, I had no idea the Titanic sank or that it was a real ship! I cried and cried because he told me the ending; so, like any other Dad, he had nothing else to but to take me to the movie (again, talk about awkward). And thus started a Titanic obsession; from that moment on, like so many others, I read every book and saw every movie I could and that is why I requested "Hearts that Survive" from NetGalley.

    Of all those books and movies, I will say that "Hearts that Survive" is definitely different. First of all, the Titanic sinks in the first 200 pages. The last 200 pages is on life AFTER the sinking (which I guess the title implies, but I didn't think that far ahead). For the most part, this book was okay. I did enjoy the characters and the plot was okay, but I did feel like the majority of this book fell victim (not to an iceberg) but to "show don't tell." I felt like this book was a big synopsis of a story of a different book. It was long (the galley was over 400 pages) and it encompassed over 50 years of multiple characters lives and as a result of ALL that material, there were many times that a lot of this story was told rather than shown.

    I will say that the characters really kept me from starting a different galley. In the beginning, I was hoping Craven would be the underdog that would eventually get the girl. Unfortunately... well... yea. I don't want to say anything other than that "what wishful thinking... " I enjoyed Lydia's story and grew to like Caroline's (however, I ended up skimming over the beginning). The next generation's story (Lydia's son, etc) I didn't really care about due to much of their stories being skimmed over (not by me but by the author) in simplistic "telling" sentences.

    Overall, it was an okay read. Not one I'll recommend to students because I don't think they'd stick with it, but one that lover's of all things "Titanic" might enjoy.

    Lost in Austen [DVD Review]

    From Amazon.com...

    "Amanda Price is sick of the modern world. She yearns for the romance and elegance found in the books by her favorite author, Jane Austen. But she's about to get a rude awakening as one fateful evening, she is propelled into the scheming 19th century world of Pride and Prejudice while that book's Elizabeth Bennet is hurled into hers. As the book's familiar plot unfolds, Amanda triggers new romantic twists and turns within the Bennet family circle as she clumsily tries to help the sisters nab husbands and even captivates the tantalizing Mr. Darcy herself. But what about Elizabeth... and what will become of one of the world's greatest love stories?"

    When I first started this movie I thought it was absolutely ridiculous and I couldn't wait for it to be over! And then I realized that I was barely forty minutes into it. Once I finally sat down and started breathing slowly, I got into it, especially once things started diverting from the book. At first I felt as though Amanda was simply watching things live out — and then it got good.:)

    I don't want to give too much away, but I ended up liking it — a lot. I love the Amanda's voice and I loved the words, it's a wonderfully written movie. I also loved how things were different than in the book — Wickham! Gah! He's so... wow. He was definitely my favorite part of the movie (ironic, I know). I loved how they redid his history and his story, I think (don't chastize me) I liked Wickham more than Darcy. (GASP!)

    I'd definitely recommend it (I think I may even purchase it!). Just be prepared and expect some twists.

    Haunted Halloween with Simone Elkeles and a giveaway!

    By: Simone Elkeles

    I’ve always been a complete wimp with a capital W, and I still am. My mom took me to a “stranger-danger” movie when I was seven and I freaked out. I used to hide behind trees if I saw a car drive by when I walked to my friend Dayna’s house.

    I’m still afraid of rollercoasters, because they’re scary. When I was a kid I refused to go into the “scary house” and put my hand in the “eyeball jar” in order to get my Halloween candy. And in 5th grade I threw up and had to go home early from Tracy’s sleepover party when everyone watched the horror movie Beyond the Door (seriously, the girl in the movie was possessed and her head turned completely around 360 degrees… can you blame me for puking?).

    I called 911 last year when I heard noises in my basement, but then realized I forgot that my assistant was working in my house that day. To make a long story short, my life is full of scary stories… or maybe I just have an overactive imagination and freak myself out unnecessarily because I am, after all, a storyteller.

    For research this weekend, I’m going to put on a bulletproof vest and ride with the undercover detectives from the Chicago Police Department’s Gang Homicide/Sex crime division. Wish me luck that I don’t barf on the detectives if I see some scary stuff! ~Simone Elkeles

  • Beastly: The Trailer

    After seeing this small trailer, I wanted to read "Beastly" SO bad! I've since finished the book (review coming soon) but I wanted to share it with you. I can already tell that when I compare the book to the movie, I'm not going to like the movie. I think Vanessa Hudgens is much too pretty to be playing Lindy. I think Mary Kate Olsen is going to do a fantastic job on Kendra (surprisingly). There are already HUGE differences that I'm not sure I'm going to like.

    BUT... on it's own, I think this movie is going to rock! I can't wait to see it!

    Also, doesn't Vanessa Hudgens kind of play the same character in everything she's in?

  • Harry Potter Friday

    Harry Potter Friday

    Yes, it is finally that time! Many of my students don't understand the importance of today (surprisingly). Yes, they know who Harry Potter is and they realize how it is a big deal; but after polling my classes today I am shocked to find that while the majority have seen the movies, only 5 of my 120 students have read the Harry Potter novels. I can only equate this to a generation gap (even one so slight as between my students and I — 10 years).

    I have been looking forward to this day since reading the first book and watching the first movie. Back then the end seemed so far away and now that it's here (with the exception of Part II), I find myself preparing to say "good bye." Yes, there is another movie but really... unless something changes, today marks the beginning of the end. Much of my middle school and high school life is defined by my love for the boy who lived. It makes me sad to see that so many of this generation (class of 2014) can't even fathom of depths of meaning that this day holds.

    While I will have to wait until the weekend to see the movie (I hate going with HUGE crowds), I am sporting my EVER awesome HP bracelet today at school. It took forever to make; I had no idea how hard it would be to put the little charms on the bracelet — but I'm wearing it with pride today.

    First, you'll see a pair of glasses, then a spider, a rat, a frog, a book, a "Happy Birthday" cake, a lightning bolt, a castle, a frog, and a little VW old school bug. I didn't have room for Hagrid's motorcycle.

    What about you? What are you doing (feeling) on this momentous Harry Potter Friday?

  • "Romeo and Juliet" Book Trailer

    For an Educational Technology class I had to create a movie and incorporate it into my classroom. There weren't any real standards or 'rules' that I had to work around — it was a pretty simple premise. Make a movie that would be relevant to your classroom. Most people did speeches or something like that, but I really wanted to do something book related. This took me about two hours to hammer out and get the way I wanted to, but that's because I really had NO idea what I was doing. I think it turned out well.

    What do you think? The resolution is kind of crappy. I know.

    Before I introduce the book to the class on the first day of the unit I will welcome the class into the classroom and ask them to take their seats quietly. The shades will be closed, lights off, and my computer screen with a video will be displayed on the board via projector. After the second bell, I will remain silent until the class is completely silent and everyone is in their seats. I will then walk to my desk and press play.

    After the video, I will ask a student to flip on the lights. I will quickly pass out a small ten question pretest. When the students are finished, I will collect the pretest and then begin discussion by asking the students the following questions:

    • Has everyone heard of “Romeo and Juliet”?
    • Has anyone read “Romeo and Juliet”?
    • What do you know about “Romeo and Juliet”?
    • What modern stories do you think follow the same plot line?

    By using the movie to introduce the book, I will capture my students’ attention and get them excited about reading the book.

    Haunted Halloween with Kate Kaynak and a giveaway!

    The Black Dog By: Kate Kaynak
    On Halloween night in 1987, my conservative, all-girls high school was actually showing The Omen in the campus theater. My best friend Eva and I tried to figure out what blatant lies the seniors must've passed along to the Headmistress--a sweet-looking old lady with a spine of velvet-covered steel--to get a movie like that on the schedule. Perhaps they'd played up the religious themes, and hey, with Gregory Peck in it, what unsuspecting adult would expect something completely terrifying?
    My parents were strict religious-types, so I'd used that"it's based on the Bible" angle myself when I'd gotten their permission to attend. Eva and I giggled with excitement as the lights dimmed and the screen came alive. She loved all kinds of movies, but she also knew how strict my parents were--no MTV, no R-rated movies, no swearing, no dating--and DEFINITELY no smoking or drinking. So she saw my presence in the seat next to hers as a shared victory against the forces of tyranny and censorship.
    Holy crap.
    The Omen scared the $#!% out of me. It was--by far--the most frightening thing I'd ever seen. My compulsory religious instruction meant that every biblical reference resonated--and seemed horribly, horribly plausible. When Gregory Peck went to the cemetery and the black hellhound appeared on the tomb over him I nearly had a heart attack. And the thing with the plate glass…
    By the time the credits rolled, I was a pasty-pale, trembling mess of fear-sweat--but in a good way. I loved the exhilaration--although I was really glad the movie ended before I hurled. Nothing of the ride home with someone's parent registered. The light over the front door was out when I used my key to let myself in. I guessed that my mom had turned it off to let the trick-or-treaters know that it was too late to ring the bell.
    The darkness inside seemed thick and eerie, and I started having little bursts of remembered fear from the movie. The steps creaked under my feet as I went up to my room. I flipped the light switch just inside my door--
    The large, black dog lifted his head off his paws and stared at me from the center of my bed. My heart froze in my chest, and I couldn't move--or even scream. My purse slid off my shoulder and hit the floor.

  • Literary Snobs Beware

    Literary Snobs Beware

    With the release of New Moon, so many young adult (and adult) readers are getting excited and having a great time. Unfortunately, the "nay-sayers" (as I like to call them) are being more negative than ever. I recently wrote an article about it for the University's newspaper and I thought now would be the ideal time to share it with you.

    Literary Snobs Beware

    On November 20th, thousands of ‘tweens’ will flood the cinemas to see New Moon, the highly anticipated sequel to Twilight. The Twilight franchise, both the books and the movies, is the newest fad – even Walmart would agree. But with any new fad, there are always the nay-sayers; as easy as it is to find someone reading one of the four Twilight books, it seems it is even easier to find someone bashing these books. Personally, I’ve read the books and have seen the first movie. I don’t own any stickers, shirts, or other Robert Pattinson merchandise, but I did enjoy reading the books. And while I am not in complete support of Twilight’s Walmart domination, I can’t argue with it.

    The Twilight phenomenon has put good books in students’ hands (by choice), much like what Harry Potter accomplished while I was in high school. You can argue that the writing is less than perfect, the heroine is slightly ridiculous, and that Edward Cullen is a little “too” brooding and may, in fact, be a stalker. You can’t, however, argue with the fact that both young adults and adults are reading recreationally. Those who have read the books, generally speaking, like them. It is the people who haven’t read the books that are making all the ruckus.

    With the release of the new movie, ‘Twilighters’ are glowing with excitement – and why shouldn’t they be? I’ll be the first to point out the flaws of the novels (and the movie), but who am I to judge someone else’s reading preferences? It is extremely detrimental to society to have all these Anti-Twilight people laughing at, humiliating, and pointing fingers at those who have read, liked, and even became obsessed with the novels. To publically criticize another’s choice of literature instills in the recreational reader the idea that reading a particular book, Twilight in this case, is “uncool.” Then the reader begins to question what else they’ve read, and liked, that was, according to society, ridiculous. At this point, the reader is humiliated and ready to give up recreational reading entirely. This, of course, applies to other genres that are labeled as less than ‘popular’ or acceptable by literary snobs such as graphic novels, comic books, the Harlequin Romance novels (and others as such), chick-lit, fantasy, or sci-fi. I have personally witnessed on several occasions, as have most people, the verbal abuse that occurs once the Twilight topic is raised amongst peers. Ironically, these abusive nay-sayers, stereotypically, don’t read their homework assignments, much less for recreation.

    To those who publicly humiliate anyone who has read and enjoyed the Twilight series or any of the other ‘unpopular’ genres: who do you think you are? What gives you the right to judge what others read to the point of embarrassing them? Who gives you the authority to say such hurtful things? Yes, Twilight has seemingly taken over the world, but at least people are reading. Please think twice before you even joke about how ridiculous Twilight is, reading has already become an almost taboo subject. Those who read recreationally are, occasionally, ashamed of this behavior (why, I don’t know) – but they definitely don’t need your discouragement.

    To those who are self-proclaimed Twilight (obsessed) fans or book lovers in general, do not be afraid of reading recreationally and displaying your love of literature. If anything else, come up with a witty comeback using big words, after all, you are the literate one. Either way, I'll see you in the theaters.
